Lets rebuild the Colloseum?

So, i was thinking, why not rebuild the Colloseum in Rome and let prisoners fight?

Can you think of any reasons not to?

Reasons not to;

destroying history
It's inhumane
would cost alot of money
Would be the mark of a barbaic society (meh)

Entertainment
Chaper then keeping Prisoners alive for long periods of time

Okay. What about using a normal stadium for the "sport" and instead of just only prisoners, you would have trained fightes, fighting for money. Better idea? Rather see willing humans die then cock and dog fights.

So yeah, thoughts?

I don't think we can rebuild it. I remember reading about an Earthquake that permanently damaged the foundations or something like that.

As for making prisoners fight in it, not going to happen. Mainly because, well your forcing humans to fight and murder each other for entertainment. No way in hell it would get through any committee.

I think the fact that it's inhumane is probably going to be more important than the cost,or the destruction of history.Also,what kind of prisoners would we allow to fight?I mean,back in the days this stuff did go on,you could be out there fighting for a number of reasons.In today's society,would we do the same thing?There would have to be a balance between the smaller crimes,and the big ones,and there would be a lot of controversy over each individual case that just toed the line between the two.

And if we only use murderers,what happens if it turns out after we've set them to fighting,that,whoops,they were innocent after all?It does happen,even years down the line,and that would case a lot of problems.

That said, I think it's a pretty terrible idea. We have much bigger and better and cheaper stadiums now, why bother destroying history for a structure that's not as good?

As for the prisoner fights... geeze. Not that I care much for murders and the like, and I realise they cost a lot of money to keep alive, but I think forced labour is significantly more useful.

I'd like to see murderers personally trying to gain their freedom through murder. 2 wrongs don't make a right... but maybe a hundred does! and lets be honest a lot of people would watch because we're sick and twisted and don't live in Rome so it would be on tv(tv is the greatest desensitizer don't ya know). PPV murder fights! doesn't that have a nice ring to it?

Especially since the company that makes lethal-injection serum is shutting down production soon, we're gonna need some other way to dispose of humanity's garbage. Why not get some awesome TV out of it while we're at it?

If you watched death race, or nearly any other modern action flick, then this statement is at least somewhat hypocritical.
OT: I think we should build a new Colosseum, where young men from all around the world can fight, mma style. We are a race that thrives on conflict, and individual value is almost always, if not always, defined through conflict. Therefore, we need a safe(at least safeish), legal, and peaceful way to allow conflict both between individuals and even nations.

We definately need The Running Man to come to life. Just without the cheesy accents and bad one liners, although that will be hard to avoid if Hollywood is involved. But forget the colloseum, an old pile of rocks. Need a larger more modern specticle of an event. Lots of different camera angles. And sponsors as far as the eye can see. Will the Energizer Bunny (Could be some wild sort of battlebot) take down the triple murderer? If they can make it all the way through they are free to go. But we'll make sure thats pretty much impossible.

That's why I said slightly. You are still gaining enjoyment out of the perceived suffering and conflict to the death of living human beings. Whether or not the danger is real is partly irrelevant.

You have a proven murderer. He's happy to kill for one reason or another.

You then brutalise him, teach him to use his body as a weapon, kill everyone he knows as a friend and even make him do it...

I did think about this after posting.The only way I could think of it working is if you killed them in secret,and just said they were released,and say they 'found themselves' after what they had been through,and...I dunno,went into the woods or something.
