That said, I think it's a pretty terrible idea. We have much bigger and better and cheaper stadiums now, why bother destroying history for a structure that's not as good?
are we talking about the same Coloseum?? the one that was built so that it would be able to be flooded so that there could be "sea battles" and in a way that if one shouted in one side of the whole thing it would be heard all the way to the other side??

man... we have bigger and cheaper stadiums, but i dont really know about better.

I don't think we can rebuild it. I remember reading about an Earthquake that permanently damaged the foundations or something like that.

As for making prisoners fight in it, not going to happen. Mainly because, well your forcing humans to fight and murder each other for entertainment. No way in hell it would get through any committee.
Damn committee's ruining everything.

1. Hey, what's more fun than watching a Psycho who instead of serving three life sentences he just gets to slice and dice up a 19 year old who got caught shoplifting, thus serving his own sadistic pleasures and ensuring that justice is as unfair as possible ^-^

2. This entire question is just posed terribly.

3. The benefits are few and hardly balance out the cost.

4. It would be protecting humanity by sacrificing the very thing we seek to save.

Wait...you dont mean just rebuild the Colloseum, which would be cool. You mean bring back gladiator fights?

What a roundabout way of saying that....

Anyway, i believe that movies are EXACT predictions of real life. So, according to the movie gospel, the prisoners will break free and kill you, 100% of the time.

So no.

Because a shoplifter would be put in there. Obviously -.- I was thinking along more serious crimes

We definately need The Running Man to come to life. Just without the cheesy accents and bad one liners, although that will be hard to avoid if Hollywood is involved. But forget the colloseum, an old pile of rocks. Need a larger more modern specticle of an event. Lots of different camera angles. And sponsors as far as the eye can see. Will the Energizer Bunny (Could be some wild sort of battlebot) take down the triple murderer? If they can make it all the way through they are free to go. But we'll make sure thats pretty much impossible.
You just mixed Running Man with the rehabilitation from Idiocracy. I don't know if I should hug or slap you.
Oddly enough thats how most people react to me. :)

I support rebuilding it, but gladiator games are a step too far. Maybe the inside could be remodled as a modern stadium.

Yeah let watch the prisoners as they decapitate each other bodies in a senseless blood bath in a form of entertainment o wait... maybe it the fact these days people get squeamish at the sight of chop up corpses and dying people drowning in their own blood. Seriously who want to see a person intestine hanging out of their guts?
The only way I can see the Coliseum rebuild is if the coliseum become a new stadium for any athletic sport like Football (soccer).

I'm sorry, but I won't enjoy watching people bludgeon each other to death or get mauled by lions.
Also,

is a very good point.

Besides, what if they win? They get released? Yeah, I think not.

This thread is basically 'should criminals murder each other'? It's a terrible idea in all respects, really.

Oh yes, because THAT'S what's ridiculous about this idea.

Sorry, but you forget that what constitutes a "serious crime" is totally up for debate, and as power shifts, so will the definition of that word. No doubt eventually someone essentially innocent, or having committed only a small crime and now regrets it will be up against some psycho used to killing who gets a sadistic pleasure from it, too. It's just an awfully flawed system. I don't know why we'd ever introduce a system like that, because it's just asking for it to be horribly abused some day.

I think prisoners vs. the homeless would be a good idea..

Heartless? I don't know.. but there's enough of them that we could do away with the more severe cases.

I think people who have been on the dole for extended periods of time should be included. And by extended periods I mean like 5 years plus.

Are you kidding? It might not be as popular as MMA or something where no one dies, but it'd still be successful.

Look at how popular videos of fatal accidents are on Youtube. Now remove a lot of the guilt by having the participants all be murderers and child molesters, and all willing. It'd be popular.
Yes I find people getting hurt amusing but I don't like to see people die and neither do most of the world.

That is footage of an assassin killing a Japanese politician with a wakizashi. It has 1.5 million views and thousands of comments. It isn't even the most popular of these videos.

The world can be a very dark place at times.

You wouldn't need to defile a Ancient piece of Roman history in order to do this you could just do it in a modern arena.

If the reasons you've given us are any indication, I would say no.

But, if we rebuilt it, it would make one hell of a place to hold the Olympics...though the Olympic administrators wouldn't like the negative publicity of altering an ancient monument.

You have to go to war with the Catholic Church in order to get this done properly. The building looks like crap nowadays because all the marble was actually stolen to be used on churches. If you want it back to its original state, you gotta wreck some churches.

...of course you could get new marble but that's lame.
This made me laugh for some strange reason...

Maybe because its the most graceful anti-christian joke I've seen on these forums(and there are MANY un-graceful anti-christian jokes)

It's ok watching it on you tube, but why would you want to watch death in real life where it is more graphic and depressing.
