Near is the master of the AssPull. Just saying that out loud.

Also, google 'Light teaches swimming' for lulz. Google 'Light teaches how to swim' for a bonus.

EDIT:

I freakin' loved Death Note, except the ending. I didn't like the ending not because of HOW it ended
(Light's downfall etc. I have no problem with), but WHY it ended that way. Mikami's actions as a solo act that led to him doing the exact same thing as Light at the exact same time as Light that led to the discovery of the notebook seems like a somewhat cheap excuse because the writer had finally run out of ways for Near to screw with Light's plans. Also, I take issue with the fact that Light was the only person besides Mikami and Near to not bring a gun to that meeting. I figure that being a super-genius as well as a professional detective who is licensed to carry firearms means that he should've realized: "Hey, maybe I might need something beyond a scrap of Death Note paper in my watch."
In one word: Padding. DN was that long because the author expressly wanted the series to have 108 chapters.

EDIT 2:

Death Note, for me, was a pretty damn good anime, one of the first I've watched. Looking back on it now, I can safely say that it's still a pretty damn good anime, though maybe not as great as I remember it.

The premise and the overall story was damn good, I think. A classic tale on how "absolute power corrupts absolutely". The animation was damn good, the pacing was damn good, basically everything overall was damn good.

Though you can't spell Death Note without contrived....well, you could, but you get the point. The story, particularly around the halfway point, got really confusing and all that, basically going "I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew that!" and the like. Towards the end I had no idea what the hell they were doing to prove who was Kira.

But overall overall, it was a damn good anime. I just recently watched the live action movies, and those were...interesting to say the least, though obviously just cash in's.

EDIT: Though apparently One Piece is better. I haven't seen it, but from what I have seen it looks in the same vein as Naruto I.E. pointless filler after pointless filler. Though that could be 4Kids castrating the show at the time.
So it was damn damn damn damn damn damn damn damn damn damn good... damn?

L and Light's dynamic was great, but the second half lost my interest, it was a chore to watch. Not to mention I had a seething hatred for Light, he didn't have the "I'm a villain but I'm likable/ my heart is in the right place." like say, The Claw from GunXSword. Which is exactly what they were going for.

When I first watched it I thought it was one of the best anime series ever. Then I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain, Baccano etcetera and I realised how very wrong I was.

I don't want to see it. I never want to read. And I want absolutely nothing to do with it EVER...I have my reasons...(I never knew my friends could have such twisted fantasies.....) T_T
If I may ask what do you mean by reasons. I always looked up to L the one who fought against Light (the corrupted). I do agree especially the second season was quite dark when L dies in the fight against light but it was a brilliant allusion to the sacrifice of Christ (L washing the feet of the sinner Light).

If you do not wish to answer me that is fine, you can ignore me or answer me in a PM. It is your choice.
Oh no no no no. You're actually reading way to much into what I said. Half of everything I say I am just joking around but since this is the internet I'll admit it is hard to tell.

What I was really talking about was that during my senior year in high school was when Death Note got really popular. I had never read or watched it but my friends did. I should note that all my friends are girls and that I am the only guy in the group. ALL of them were obsessed about it. Death Note didn't really seems like something that would interest me so I just never felt like checking it out. (besides I already know everything that happens because my friends wouldn't shut up about it.) Anyways back to my story. For like two months every conversation we had (and I am serious when I say EVERY) Death Note would ALWAYS be brought up. So it just got old real quick especially since I was the odd man out. But the MAIN reason I never looked into Death Note was because my friends were constantly talking about all this yaoi crap that involved Death Note. I just assumed that was what it was all about. It was just yaoi. I could go on...but I'm sure I don't really need to. Course now I'm guessing Death Note isn't really yaoi...I guess.
My apologies I do not need to hear more (especially no more yaio, lol). I do have that bad habit of reading to much into things.

I haven't seen it in... a while. Crap, I forgot nearly everything about it, except a few quotes and the characters (L is awesome).

I have to go rewatch it now...

I guess I'll just list it off:
Premise: Didn't like it
Characters: One-dimensional and unlikeable
Animation: Good
Story: Fair, but honestly just confusing

Now, despite all this I still manage to find it somewhat...compelling. But it still sucks.

I don't have any opinion on the manga, because I haven't read it. If its anything like the anime I wouldn't like it.

SUCK
I can't help but feel you're being unfair on the characters. They're just...not very one-dimensional...I don't see where you're coming from. If I were to say "Sum up character X in one trait", and you could, that for me is one-d. I don't believe that to be possible for Death Note's characters. The unlikeable main characters are intentional. It's supposed to be a morally difficult show, you're meant to have to think how far to either side you would fall.

I would criticise Death Note for being too melodramatic, and perhaps too simply plotted (although I didn't watch the anime past a certain cast member's death). I really can't recognise your image of the series at all - how could you find the plot confusing?

I preferred the live-action film to the anime, not read the manga (I've never read any manga).

Oh I agree so much. That ending cheapened it so much. Might as well use spoiler tags from here on out...
Light's downfall could've been done so much better. He could've gotten cocky, reflecting his hubris after defeating L and underestimating near, but all the blame rests on Mikami, which was essentially just bad luck on Light's part. It made the defeat meaningless, because Light wasn't outsmarted at all, it was just circumstance, and there was no clever way of reflecting on his increased recklessness that would've totally clinched it. It was such a missed opportunity, I felt cheapened by the cop out of it.

I kind of expected light to shoot Near in the face as a final act of desperation, only to be shot by near's teammates and his own.

I liked how in the Manga he dies while yelling and swearing in his tears and blood, because it really showed who he was. Contrast it with L who died quietly and confirming in his head that Light is Kira.

But in the Anime they changed it so he makes a getaway while bleeding and dying peacefully on the steps. It sure looked nice but but it just wasn't the same as the manga's ending.

I never liked Light, as he comes off as sickenly intellegent. His ability to counter every move made against him through plans that no modern man could fucking consieve sober annoyed the hell out of me. For those that may intend to watch it, I spoiler tag this part, so dont read if not want spoileres.

Near what I think would be the end of the first half of the series, He actually plans out how to through L off his trail by the most obtruse plan concievable, and everything falls into place without a single fucking hitch. He actually gives up the Deathnote, losing his memory, than helps L catch "Kira", and than finally they catch him, they get hold of the Deathnote (which he forged fake rules in to prevent it from being destroyed) and once he gets hold of it, regains his memories and kills the fake Kira. Than tricks Rem into killing L and his assisstant by making it seem that Misa would be harmed, triggering Rem to prevent them from doing so, but at the same time breaking a major rule which causes Rem to turn to dust and Misa to gain her lifespan. It seemed to practically be impossible to predict every detail, and it seemed that he managed to do so.

Seeing him as an antagonist would have been okay, but the whole series was about him, in the light of the protagonist. And they gave him the most powerful item short of the "kill anyone button". Theres no way to counter it, save for hiding the truth about your real name, but because he had that ***** with him (the possibly most annoying female character ive ever seen) who
had TWO reapers die for her
.

Than the second half, the whole world is fucking worshipping the guy, as they are terrified of his power, Light is now currupt (or so everyone says, I think it happened at the first and second names he wrote down) and N (who is another annoying character) starts to find out about Kira.

The only good part was...

when Light died in the end, but I would have had it where Light basically won everything, and than the reaper that hangs around him kills him for the lols.

So in short, hated the series...

I honestly wasn't the slightest bit impressed by Death Note. Kira came across as so emo that I didn't even get past the first five chapters. I like Bakuman (Same author) much better.

I stayed with it until Kira killed L. After that I COMPLETELY lost interest. I literally said out loud: "Why the fuck are there little kids replacing L".

Death Note is anime-Twilight.

The characters are one-dimensional, unlikeable, pose too much, and the show is built around perhaps the stupidest premise in existance.

There is no reason at all to read it if you are a heterosexual male.
People like what you dont like. I dont even like the show but if you are not going to contribute then dont bother posting.

OT: I tried to get into this show. Cowboy Bebop and Trigun were my favorites.
I just finished watching Cowboy Bebop today and thought it was amazing. Back to the orgininal topic, Death Note was a brilliant series (it does have some fan girl issues, but thats a sign the series is good) and so is Naruto and Bleach, just in different ways. At the same time I do strongly recommend One Piece cos it is by far the best ongiong manga/anime series I have looked at.
