I'm very big into poetry and would recommend Don Juan by Byron for some pure mastery of language, and it's hilarious to boot.

I must admit that I didn't have the patience to go trough the Lord of the Rings book. But there are some writers I really love:

Kurt Vonnegut. (Slaughterhouse-five or Cat's cradle)
Frank Herbert. (Dune)
Hunter S. Thompson. (Fear and loathing... , of course).
R. A. Salvatore. (Homeland)
Mario Puzo. (The godfather. But I still don't know if I like the book better than the movie.)

Edit: Titles... forgot about that one!

I haven't read so many books, so I'll just say something slightly unusual:

Snorri Sturluson. I've got his sagas standing on my bookshelf, and I really ought to read them.

Or you could try Growth of the soil (a book I hated, but it is apparently good), by Knut Hamsun.

Another one: The great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Raymond E Feist
David Eddings
Brent Weeks
George RR Martin
Terry Brooks
Lovecraft
These are definitely my top 6. I can never decide which order to put them in but they would all be there.
And whilst I'm not the biggest fan of his work, I think Isac Asimov writes some very good books

Phillip K. Dick, some of his later works get out of hand, due to his paranoia being in full swing by that point, but he still has some great works with genuinley intriguing plots.

Mainly I recomend opening with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Ubik. If you like them move onto the others like The Man in High Castle or The World Jones Made

Neil Gaiman, my absolute favorite writer. My favorites of his books are American Gods, Anansi Boys, and The Sandman comics. He's a genius, with a unique way of writing, and an imagination wider than most writers.

Read it, wan't impressed. Then again, I was forced to read it in high school, so that might have had something to do with it...

Paul Stewart is great at writing fantasy. My favourite series by him is the Edge Chronicles: he has a pretty amazing and deep world in this series spanning multiple generations. The characters are developed well and are generally interesting and they deal with plenty of themes like slavery and the effects of fear and personal beliefs as well as being just great reads. They are probably aimed at teenagers, but i think that adults will get more out of them, besides, his collaborations with a frankly brilliant artist add a greater immersion to the world. Try beginning with "the last of the Sky Pirates" it's not the main character of the world: sort of a second generation after the main one, but it's probably the one that will tell you quickest if you like the series or not. Additionally, check out his hillarious parody of Tolkein-esque fantasy "Muddle Earth": lord Cuddles is eaily one of the funniest villains in literature.
i'm also a fan of Tolkein, Rowling, Chris Ryan, Philip Reeve

I was dead tired of fantasy books, but then came Joe Abercrombie with his 'The First Law' series and renewed my love. This guy is not just a good fantasy author but a bloody good author overall. Enganging story with deep and interesting characters makes his books winners.

As far as I'm concerned, he's miles ahead of both Eddings and Tolkien.

Harper Lee only ever wrote one book but that book is one of the finest to ever have been made and I absolutely love it.

George Orwell is great also, and Pratchett for comedy and Lovecraft for horror.

Poetry in high school is the bane of my life. It makes everything so bland and boring. Read it out loud to yourself with the proper rhythm and it becomes amazing.
