Generals 2 didn't even show up at E3 2012.

Older RTS games had very good stories like Warcraft 3, Red Alert 2 ,Emperor the Battle for Dune and Generals. I even liked Dune 2000 (it was my first game on PC along with Midtown Madness).
The only recent ones I remember is Starcraft 2 and to a much lesser extent Red Alert 3.

Are there any others coming out?
I also notice a bit of bais against them on the Escapist. Why?
And for those who are against them, have you played the Arthas storyline in Warcraft 3? That is probably the best fall from grace story I have seen.

I haven't really played many, but I do enjoy them. I've mainly just played the Age of Empires series, Command & Conquer and Battle for Middle-Earth.

Personally, I loved BFME and still play it every now and then. I'm really hoping that they make a BFME3 when the Hobbit comes out but....I'm not getting my hopes up. Sure, it had a lot of issues, but that game, plus some good mods, was fantastic.

My problem with RTS games is that they do get tedious - but they the same could be said about a lot of other genres (FPSs, in my opinion). Also balancing issues. Both players and AI often tend to rush, which isn't fun for anyone.

Storywise....well, out of the ones I've played, the stories are all a bit average, but they suffice.

I'd love a Mass Effect universe RTS. I think that would be brilliant.

Well Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebelion just came out so give that a try, however that does not have a story mode it is all about PvP.

Also don't start with finger pointing, there is just no use for it in any thread.

I have played a good few RTS games and I enjoy them quite a bit usaully. Some of my favorites are Dawn of war, Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium wars and Supreme commander.

Im not sure about new ones coming out, they are still working on Dawn of war 3 but I don't think it's coming out anytime soon.
I think the reason behind many people disliking them is just that some people don't find it engaging to command troops and would prefer to have direct control themselves.

Actully although not new, you could try checking out League of Legends. It's kinda like an RTS in that you control your character the same way and it requires stratedgy, they are pretty fun games.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is good fun no real story to it and no campaign so it's all sandbox setups vs ai or other players.

End of Nations is a new RTS coming out in the next year which will be based in a persistent world setup with MMO elements and will be F2P, looking good and a lot of the devs are former C&C before it went bad.

fall from grace, ehem myth 2 is the best rts ever made. Although no base-building its tactical warfare surpasses most of them with the story "without too much spoiler".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oR2ceo7Evo get to 0:50 and you will understand a far far far better story than that joke called warcraft.

I love Dawn of War 1 and 2.

The only PC games I've played that I really enjoyed and both of them still stand out as two examples of how you do hammy voice acting right!

My favorite RTS is probably Dawn of War Dark Crusade. DoW2 was pretty cool but it felt (through the campaign) that it was more of an action-rpg rather than an rts. Still a lot of fun; I also picked up the Chaos expansion but not the latest one.

I don't think we're going to see another Dawn of War for a while. The company that makes them is having some really bad financial troubles....even though they use the online pass thing extensively. Hmmm, maybe the online pass isn't the solution; big surprise.

Medieval 2: Total War.
This, this so fucking much. My favorite Total War game out of all of them. Shogun 2 came close to topping it for me (despite some controversial changes) but I just love the medieval setting, vibe at atmosphere that little bit more than the feudal Japan one.

Thirded. Medieval Total War was just gripping. But this isn't really a "RTS," it's turn based. I'm going to have to agree with the OP that there really isn't a great RTS on the horizon that combines gameplay and story.

I fricken love RTS games, despite the fact that I fucking suck at them. The first game I ever played was an RTS game, Age of Empires II to be precise.

Are you referring to Relic or THQ?

I don't recall any major issues with Relic recently, especially considering they've already announced Company of Heroes 2. And they've already announced before that they are apparently working on DoW III.

If you're referring to THQ then yes, they're having some big financial problems but they didn't "make" Dow, they published it.

Personally, I enjoyed DoW II about as much as the first but for different reasons. The Last Stand Mode in particular was a lot of fun to play.

I own the entire Command and Conquer series. Yes, that includes Sole Survivor... and Twilight.

My favorites are Tiberian Sun and RA2. Doesnt stop me from enjoying the other games... except Twilight.

And i think Generals 2 didnt show up at E3 because Victory decided it would develop the game rather than showboating it.

As for other upcoming RTS's, theres Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion and Petroglyph probably has something going on in that department, as they dont know how to do anything else.

I love RTS games even though I kind of suck at them, they'll always have a soft spot in my mind because AoE II was one of my first video games ever, and I still play it today. Yeah WC3 despite having a nearly impossible skirmish mode had a great campaign, I actually remember playing through the Arthas story as a kid and not really paying attention to the backstory and then playing though it again recently and realizing how dark and depressing it was. Also the Undead campaign is probably one of the only moments where an RTS campaign literally focused on the forces of evil and didn't have it be some sort of "alternate universe" BS, no you were actually playing the evil faction and having an impact on the game's overall plot. Definitely one of the best stories.

I'd love to check out some newer RTS games but unfortunately the only computer I have it my 4-year-old laptop which can only handle old ones like WC3,AoE II,Rise of Nations etc.
