I thought the trailer was amazing for Dead Island, In this case the child I felt it was more a "loss of innocence" theme that the trailer was trying to convey instead of being shocking or outrageous. The use of a child's death from zombies/her own father was an excellent way to convey the mood of the game that the trailer is trying to promote. I doubt the game will be that good but this trailer is moving to me and will make me notice this game if it pops up again later down the line.

As for killing kids in games I understand both sides of the argument; I have only watched parts dead space but they seem to use children's death and children monsters for shock value more then as a element of plot or atmosphere (and yes kicking the baby necromorphs is fun but it's also kinda stupid because it seems so arbitrary and out of character for Issac McStompypants).
But I did find it annoying in Fallout 3 when I couldn't kill kids. In a nuclear wasteland where there is so much freedom to approach each situation you come across it seems silly to suddenly limit the player on a true moral choice:since kids can't attack you in Fallout 3 the only way they can treat you as hostile is by running away in terror, so do you spare them or shoot them in the back? I killed all the adults in the Republic of Dave due to a misunderstanding and the kids where all scurrying around and I felt that I should just put them out of their misery instead of letting them wander the waste and die an almost inevitable painful death, but the game would not let me!

A cool thing would be to let players kill kids in games. Then in sequels after that, have the kids grow up to be vendors for the best equipment.

Unless you kill them in the previous game of course. In which case, no BFG for you.

People will twiddle the save files, but it would be a neat way to make a point.
I think what beniki suggested would be amazing, it would create the choice between instant gratification from what could be gained for killing said child and losing the potential of that child's future capacity for good or evil. I think a choice like this would carry a much better weight in game then arbitrary moral choice systems and it would present children as potential for the player rather then a pet like npc or an obstacle.

This is genius.

AWESOME trailer...

I think that a dead kid conveys that nobody is safe.
kinda what you would expect from a zombie game

oh hey, thanks for ruining something from dead rising II, awesome.
What got ruined? You get told right at the beginning. "Katie needs Zombrex or she'll turn into a zombie. GET IT, CHUCK? DO YOU HEAR ME? THAT'S WHY YOU WERE ON THAT GAME SHOW, REMEMBER? REMEMBER THAT, CHUCK?"

Seriously, that CURE woman was almost as bad as Navi.

Almost
Hey I LIKE Navi. I NEVER found her annoying. now If you wanna put an annoying character just use this little bugger:
"Want some chocolate?"
You will most likely know him. He is from the worst game I and most people have ever played.

You know, I love playing as lurker in Dead Space 2 multiplayer. Ripping people's heads out with your 3 tentacles is always hugely satisfying.

Just anything bad happening to children is a gray area for games and such, you see a lot more of it these days than before.

Dead Rising with the mom and kid in the car during the intro video before the Start screen.

Zombieland is another one, zombie kids going after the mom.

And I believe it was that zombie movie where everyone was in the mall, at the beginning the kid bites the dad and all hell breaks loose.

It seems to attract people more to something because it's quite a serious thing, murdering children.

Don't think I need to say much more.

Hopefully the game is trying to go for some kind of heart string tugging approach.
E.g. Do I risk myself for the good of that small child, or just to add extra emphasis/hard hittingness to the story overall.
(Apologies if someone already posted something similar)

Wow. That trailer was beautiful. I can totally see why they used a kid, but with that presentation, pacing and editing, I think it would've worked just as well if it were anyone else with an emotional connection to the "Human" characters.

It did something that Zombie paraphernalia rarely does. Highlights the cost and true, emotional horror of seeing your loved ones turn on you.

It shows that games are maturing. Kids die in movies, why not games? A game loses its realism as soon as the kid always lives.

In Army of Two...The second one, I forgot its name. You can make a kid get a sniper rifle for you where he dies in the process. This I thought was amazing because on top of that they really rub in the consequences of your actions by showing what happens to the family of the child.

Oh my god.

Might I say that that's a FUCKING BEAUTIFUL trailer.
Just one of the best I might have ever seen.

And yeah, kids=innocence.
You kill that and the game becomes harsh.

Children are never spared from life's adversities, we just don't like to talk about it. It's all okay if everything went to shit as long as little Timmy survived. Besides, killing children in games is always sensitive subject, because it's the player who does the killing and we already get enough hate for games being too "violent". Personally I'm not gonna feel more immersed if I can shoot a kid, even if he/she is annoying. Kinda seems pointless to me. But yeah, showing that everyone can be struck by disaster is a good move.

Also some of the posts are a bit disappointing and a tad bit hypocritical. We were all children once even if some of us were forced to grow up too early. Yes, children can be heartless little bastards who can get away with a lot, but hating them because you can't get even is equally stupid. I just blame the parents :p

One minor problem. There are also adults that have a deep concern about these things. I wouldn't play DI just from the trailer. I honestly don't care how good it is, but that trailer depressed me. (And I've seen I Spit On Your Grave and The Human Centipede)

Artistic media is fine - but an 18 cert. doesn't give you right to break all taboos. I REALLY don't want to turn on my TV and catch "that", please.

If you want to watch it, fine. But give me a chance not to.

Perhaps it ads realism to it but either way its still not cool. Call me old fasioned but the massacre of women & children does tend to be less appealing for me.

On a completely contradictory note the video was very artistically well done.
