It's nothing new in storytelling, the easiest way to provoke an emotional response from the audience is through tragic death, and death is most tragic when it occurs to beautiful women, children and pets.

Damn man, that was freaking depressing! Hot damn, a very well made trailer.
OT: I don't think so, I mean this video (to me) makes a prominant point of the mind set and struggle one would face in a zombie out break.
I mean even without dialogue this got the mood across, much better than any L4D or Dead Rising could've. I figure as long as it has a point and is justified by the situation or mood, its alright, unlike Dante's Inferno where they got accolades/backlash from having a baby killing achievment.
But maybe thats just me :/

This sort of thing didn't bother me until I became a father. People wonder why perfectly intelligent parents' act so stupid, its because you feel like if something happens to your children, your entire life has been a waste. The things I would be willing to do to protect my kids, would make the Devil cry in disgust.

Video damn near made me cry.
Call me a pansy, but I'm not a father and that still shook me quite a bit. Just because I can relate to the humane aspects of characters and people, doesn't always make me a pussy. I suppose that's why I always wind up with the "goody two-shoes" points in all the games with a moral choice system, but come on. What if that was your child, or you?

This is why I can't do horror...

All children die, sooner or later, albeit not all of them are still children when they do. I find it annoying that one cannot acknowledge this in fiction, so I welcome horrible things happening to children in fiction. That said, depending on the genre, the death of anyone should have a narrative purpose. In a horror/slasher/splatter film, when someone dies it should heighten the tension and horrify. In a drama the death of anyone, child or adult, should signify something, mean something to the rest of the characters. In Fallout 3, it should cause you to gain the trait "Child Killer" and turn decent folk against you, like in Fallout 2.

I just watched the movie Slither, and I was... to put it mildly SURPRISED when...
... the child sisters of the late-teen protagonist were taken over by horrid icky undignified brain-controlling parasite slugs. Not because I thought it unspeakably evil that they would not let the children escape on a pink fluffy cloud of political correctness, but because I expected them to try and dodge outrage by letting the children escape in such a way.

Rant/Opinion Mode (Oh Noes)

Well the point SOME people have seemed to miss is 'Drama and Tragedy'. It's 'Dramatic' watching that child run for her family and end up only getting herself and them killed, it's 'Tragic' that they all die. It's not meant to be entertaining, it's meant to provoke a emotional response unto which you can actually feel sympathy or remorse for those that have been turned into zombies or simply those that have died. When anyone watches this and goes 'Boring' or 'That was entertaining', it just shows how much people miss the whole point and how disconnected with the big picture they are.

Now of course this is going to spark a shitstorm of controversy, but this video is quite accurate piece of video that has ever been used to show a situation such as Zombies. Cause in real life there is no discrimination between kids and adults in disasters or possible apocalypses. If anything, this trailer (And possibly in the game) signify that videogames as a medium are progressing forwards and maturing. Movies, Books, and Music have long portrayed children dieing to different degrees and ways, but now that games are starting to go "Time to move forwards and enter the realm of controversy as well as maturity" we can see the videogame medium taken more seriously and dramatically as any other form of Media. Some people will be disgusted with the trailer, others amused, but I feel drawn towards it as a new stepping stone of the ever evolving medium.

(This is entirely my own opinion, so think whatever you want of it)

I honestly don't understand why people complain abut children dying. Like, you can kill dogs in Call of Duty, people in every game known to man, bears in Fallout, deer in Oblivion...

...but children? STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES. No. So what if they died a few years shy of proper? They're humans. They die. Children die in real life. Stop being a pussy.

Wow! People who say zombies are becoming stale and overdone, I have to disagree with you. Zombies might be used a lot, but zombie movies and games are only getting better! That trailer looked great.

Funnily enough before I came here I was watching that trailer and ended up turning it off about a minute through because it was kind of depressing (it might not have been so bad, but from the title and the thumbnail I was expecting something B-grade and light-hearted).

OP: I have noticed that in recent years kids have been coming up more and more in games, first they simply weren't in more "mature" titles, then they were but you couldn't kill them, now you can kill children so long as they've already been zombified or necromorphed or really become something that doesn't really classify as "human child" anymore. When it comes to killing the previously mentioned monsterised children I have no qualms (could you really picture one of those tentacle babies in Dead Space as what they were before), but as I haven't had the opportunity to do so yet I'd probably feel a bit awkward about having to kill a child in a game (not to mention it would give the anti-gaming crusaders even more ammo).

This.

The trailer was cool though! Although I vastly preferred my own version [http://www.tubedubber.com/#Bwtr_-4vz6g:Iof5pRAIZmw:0:100:34:0:true].

Why?

To kill anyone is an abhorrent thing to do. I have no problem killing children in games for the same reason I have no problem killing adults in games: it isn't real. Frankly, if you see some sort of overlap between reality and gaming (as is suggested above) I'm pretty damn worried that you don't feel awful for killing adults in a game.

Incredible. You finally found something that Guile's theme doesn't go with.

AND YET, I MADE THIS. http://www.tubedubber.com/#Bwtr_-4vz6g:Vzo0iHrivVQ:0:100:10:0:true

If the audio didn't loop around right near the end, it would have been PERFECT

Even more depressing than the original video. Needs Guile's theme to add kickin' radness.

I love you for finding the non-reversed version of the trailer. Seriously.

You're welcome.

This combo's more like it! It's gotta be upbeat and happy and/or heroic to contrast the scene. I especially liked the use of the lyric "are you ready to join us now?" whilst a zombie chomps on the kiddywink.

I know I'm not the only Fable fan here who wanted the chicken physics applied to children too...
