It's never gonna happen. The whole thing about light is that it goes off in all directions, I guess you could have a fucking powerful laser pointer, but that's about the extent of the power you would get.
Actually, the common theory is that Star Wars uses a lot of Plasma technology in both lightsabers and its ships.

The typical lightsaber hilt consisted of a metal cylinder between twenty and thirty-five centimeters in length. However, the size of individuals hilts varied drastically, as the weapon was tailored to the creator's specific needs and preferences. The lightsaber mechanisms were contained within the hilt. High levels of energy generated by a high-output Diatium power cell was unleashed through a series of focusing lenses and energizers that converted the energy into plasma. The plasma was projected through a set of focusing crystals that lent the blade its properties and allowed for the adjustment of blade length and power output. The ideal number of crystals was three, though only one was required.

Once focused by the crystals, the plasma was sent through a series of field energizers and modulation circuitry within the emitter matrix that further focused it, making it into a coherent beam of energy that was projected from the emitter. The blade typically extended about a meter before being arced by the blade containment field back to a negatively charged fissure ringing the emitter, where it was channeled back to the power cell by a superconductor, completing the circuit. Below is a list of the primary parts almost all lightsabers needed to use to function properly:

Lightsaber hilt
Pommel cap
Diatium power cell
Inert power insulator
Focusing lens
Lightsaber crystal
Emitter matrix
Blade emitter

Yeah, I don't think it's possible to make this any better. As TVTropes says: "Chainsaw Good [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChainsawGood]"

Uhm.. There is three simple answers.
A halberd lightsaber, the allmighty lightberd.
A targe lightshield, fear it.
The lightjoint, lights itself ;o

...Dude, someone draw a lightsaber chain saw, that really *is* the shit..

I heard someone tell me once that The Force causes the laser in the thing to bend back on itself. Am I imagining that?

It's also an mp3 player and says "Rick James, biatch!" upon fatalities?

Or maybe it changes colour when in proximity to opposite force alignment.
LotR Sting ftw. It glowed whenever orcs were near.

Aside from having never played .hack GU, I have to say that that scythe is not quite as awesome as the Death Scythe. It's pretty awesome (having actually played (but not beaten) .hack//infection, the staff-turned-scythe does strike a certain chord), but not quite as awesome as the Death Scythe. If only because of the pilot, who always reminded me of myself.

What I love about this is that it offers an explanation that seems reasonable enough on the surface (which is all you really want), and while the general theory in play may be true, I can only marvel at the technology required to produce what amounts to "an infinitely sharp sword". The required variable containment mechanism would have to be staggeringly powerful in order to contain a plasma field that can cut through a ship's hull and yet is coherent enough to halt a projectile (or another light sabre).

Also, is the proper spelling of sabre in this case "saber" or "sabre" (sabre being the proper spelling for the actual weapon)?

It's saber.

OT: Daggers, claws, wakizashi style blades, and pikes have all been done before and are all cannon. Though I suppose you could make the hilt more decorative. Such as basing it off the Phantasy Star weapons. Those are quite awesome.
