There's nothing to be berated about Touhou's all female cast. It certainly isn't any worse than Team Fortress 2's all male cast.
The two aren't even comparable. The TF2 characters aren't hyper-sexualized or beefcakes. Touhou's characters ARE hyper-sexualized and very cheesecake.
"Hyper-sexualized"? From looking at a dozen or so character pages on the Touhou Wiki, I would say that near non of the characters are what one would call "Hyper-sexualized". Are they hyper-sexualized in the sense that they don't have any negative bodily features? Because if so, what you're saying would appear to be more of your problem rather than a problem with the series. However, I will 100% agree that cheesecake-ness is plentiful.
I suppose the problem here is I tend to lump hyper-sexual and cheesecake into basically the same category. I think it's rather hard to achieve a cheesecake level of sexiness in a design without the sexiness being pretty in-your-face and a pretty high priority.

If I wanted to troll the escapist, or any other gaming forum, I'd pretty much just do everything Lilith does; just saying.

OT:
Touhou seems like an okay game, simple concept, extreme difficulty, anime aesthetic, I like all of those things but I'd hardly call it the best thing to ever grace the Earth. And I can hardly see how it's surprising that people in North America and Europe haven't heard of a Japanese, indie, bullet hell game; the only reason I'm aware of it is because of 4chan (not /b/).

Meh, I'll stick to Raiden. Seems to be essentially the same game without all the "preteen girls are spaceships."

Threads by Lillith are like me going into a CoD forum in an attempt to try and get them like The Witcher 2 whilst also insulting their intelligence and saying their opinions are not valid.

Lilith brings us the indie scene from Japan...

surprise surprise, people don't know it.

Lilith is disappoint, people get butthurt, haven't we been here before?

I think the solution can be both elegant and effective:
the Escapist should bring more news from japanese game-making other than the very big corperations.

as long as they release outside of japan anyway. >.>

Looking at this thread again, the OP is very enthusiastic and VERY offensive in her (his?) love for Touhou. Look, LilithSlave; it's fine to like something (except for if it's illegal), but don't force your tastes on other people and essentially call them worthless for disliking what you like. It makes you look insecure, and the Otaku culture doesn't need more insecure individuals forcing their opinions down other people's throats. We already have too many of those people. =P
I say this because I feel there is still hope: this man speaks the truth, Lilithslave. For your own sake (and ours), listen to what he has to say.

Yeah but...Witcher 2! It's great! Who wouldn't like Witcher 2? We should find those people and make fun of their intelligence and imply their opinions aren't valid.

The Witcher 2 is great but I can understand why people wouldn't like it at all.

Same with music and bands. I can certainly understand why people wouldn't like the music I listen too, and I wouldn't go into an RnB forum trying to convert them to tech metal fans.

And yes I do understand youre being sarcastic :)

When I was a younger man I was very enthusiastic about telling people their taste in X, Y and Z was bullshit, and all the reasons they should feel bad for liking what they like, and why the stuff I liked was so much better.

Time and experience helped me understand this made me about as personable as a kick in the balls, so I've tried to tone it down in subsequent years, with varying degrees of success.

Wait.... what? Bullet hell? No, there is only one good bullet hell game, ever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j94vB5hf28w

Ikaruga is the penultimate bullet hell shooter. Please don't be trying to stuff Touhou down our throats. Once you have played Ikaruga, you will need nothing else. Anything else is pure heresy!!!

I think the bigger problem is that my definition of cheesecake was completely different than what the actual definition of the word is. I just thought cheesecake was another way of saying blandly adorable (made to look cute but not much else). Wikipedia told me it was posters of sex symbols. So...

...Yeah, I think I'm going to have to go back on my statement; I don't see ANY Touhou characters as hyper-sexualized or as cheesecake. If anything, they just look like many generic character appearances slapped together, minus the insane amount of sexuality that happens in other circles. I'm going to assume that fans are the ones that take the characters down those routes because the internet does many strange things to many people.

Alright, my bad. It's Rule 34 and not 38, my guess is I mentally held onto the articles related to the 38 Studios debacle and unconsciously switched the numbers around. It's nothing that's worth getting worked up about, just your basic, general Freudian slip.

What I and a few others are saying is that Touhou Project's overall aesthetics just aren't doing it for us. I look at the character designs and all I see is weird Moe stuff that's wrapped up in a gameplay package that clearly does not require the sprites to be kawaii little girls to be played. There's something I'd call a thematic disconnection between the aesthetics and the gameplay, and that's what's holding me back, personally.

I'll agree that as Rule 34 states, everything in this great big world can be sexualized. Shit, there's even joke 34s on Paheal involving fridges with Photoshopped dicks plastered on. These things are sexualized by people outside of the games' production cycle, yes, and it's abundantly clear that ZUN himself isn't focused on putting these characters in degrading situations.

On the flipside, what *is* disturbing as all Hell to me (and yes, I realize this is nothing but a personal opinion) is how unilaterally cutesy everything is. It goes to the point where these characters transcend the notion of being cute for the sake of being cute, and I start wondering if there isn't some sort of insidious undercurrent. I mean, why is there only one or two guys? Does ZUN has something against masculine characters? Something in the back of my head is just utterly revulsed by all that whimsy, to the point where I'm comically tempted to run for Daystar and his Duke Nukem pics.

So obviously, when someone tells me in a tongue-in-cheek fashion that Touhou is the Best Thing Ever, I... typically want to back away slowly. Why not Ikaruga? Why not Gradius? Why not any other game from the shovelful of freeware PC games that flood Japanese download portals each year? I can't look at Touhou and *not* think that beyond the Nyon videos and the schmaltzy character designs, there's something that's just plain fucking creepy lurking underneath. That's just me, and only me.

But honestly? It's clear as day that this franchise matters to you, Lilith. That's great! My guess is I could compare it to the way I could harp on about how tragic the downfall of the adventure game genre is. The thing is, past a certain point of insistence, it stops to feel like your friendly self kindly informing us fellow gamers about a facet of the culture we might not know about, and it starts to feel like you intensely want us to like something - which *is* more than a tad annoying.

I tend to agree with that statement, apart from the "Penultimate Shooter" bit. It's an incorrectly used term, for one, but I can get behind the expressed preference. Ikaruga requires a tad more strategy than just finding the one incredibly small safe spot in a barrage of colorful rays of utter annihilation.

how could you not like anime? It's like the one true good! Its like fuzzy animals hugging their babies or pictures of pretty sunsets!
are you new to the internet? by any chance?
I don't see how my internet experience plays a part in you disliking the absolute good of anime. From the forums of CSPAN to the dredges of 4chan I've yet to hear of someone disliking anime.
Well I guess there were a few people who disliked anime, but most of those were just people who never saw it, upon seeing it they saw the errors of their way and quickly voiced their love as well.
I can't tell if you're being serious or just doing a really good eternal nothingness insanity style post. I've seen anime I like, and I've seen a lot that I despise. I like the 90's stuff, because the character designs weren't as flat as they are nowadays.
I'm curious, can you send me a link to a "classy" eternal nothingness post?
Look up any of his threads during his Sonic The Hedgehog rampage a few months ago. Sheer comedy gold.
Do I just type in "Sonic The Hedgehog rampage" in the thread search?
Here's some classics.
In which he discusses his Rabbit story [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.319440-Remember-my-frequent-talks-about-Sakura-the-Rabbit#13035874]
In which he discusses improving Heavy Rain [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.318573-You-know-what-wouldve-made-Heavy-Rain-better-SPOILERS#12987622]
Or one [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.319760-If-you-guys-said-that-Sonics-friends-are-one-dimensional-then-what-about-Shadow-the-Hedgehog?page=1]of his [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.320733-Just-because-Sonics-storylines-suck-doesnt-mean-the-franchise-shouldnt-tell-stories-at-all#13108550]several Sonic threads. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.326076-The-future-of-Sonic-the-Hedgehog-after-the-release-of-Sonic-Generations#13320816]
Or his latest, in which he discusses adapting games into epics and poems. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.376677-Poll-Video-games-as-ancient-time-epic-poems-and-songs#14683903]

It's his conviction and utter seriousness that makes the reads a riot. I'd link you to the one where his inflation fetish provided pictures, but I think that one was deleted.
Thankfully, it wasn't.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.340123-Poll-Sonic-the-Hedgehogs-friends-or-the-humans-from-the-Transformers-films-Whos-worse?page=1

I'm still proud of my post on page 2. I always bookmark threads like these. My only regret in all of my time on the Escapist is that I failed to bookmark the thread where some guy announced his desire to have sex with one of the characters from My Little Pony.

I wasn't there for him or he got banned shortly after I started posting.

Care to fill me in?
He was here for about three months, and wrote about a thousand posts. Every single one of them was some sort of complaint about Bioware or Mass Effect 3.
