Well, I don't really like bullet hell games or anime and the like. Yeah, I think that's a good enough reason for not having heard of Touhou.

The Touhou and Bayonetta comparison is nothing alike.

The fans may sexualize the characters in fanart and the like. I play Otome games and read enough Yaoi to give your grandpa a seizure, I'm well aware of how demographics and fanservice often work.

Touhou games do not sexualize the characters, though.
Not that I was trying to make a comparison, but anyway. What I'm saying is that the intent is there. Yes, the characters aren't innately sexualized, but they *become* sexualized once certain fans get ahold of them. Between that and the Bayonetta 38 I've had the dubious pleasure of finding, I don't see that much of a difference. With the Touhou cast having a fairly loli design, I'm not exactly surprised to see that happen.

So in a sense, you have to argue that yes, Touhou's female cast is sexualized. Or else why would ZUN put out so many girls and only one or two guys? There's a clear level of interest at play, here.

*shrugs* Feel free to disagree, that's just how I see things, and one of the reasons why I never really got the point of Touhou.

Well damn, That sure made me know more about Touhou.

Most of my knowledge of it is the whole "Bullet hell game with big cast of magical girls".

Though I did knew of the Tsurepettan song mostly due to it being in Umineko.

Might try it out a Touhou title sometime.

... A game that has an anime aesthetic that is not a JRPG... that's different.

I loathe bullet hell shooters so I am not interested.

Thread needs less bitching and more fanart. Seriously this is like the only Touhou thread I've ever seen that's gone 4 pages without any. I love Touhou, pretty sure it doesn't like me much cause I've only managed to beat two games on normal but I have fun losing :)

This. And I have to call absolute bullshit on the whole "most famous series of games out of Japan"
Its stated that it's the most famous INDIE series somewhere in that wall of text.

Strangely now that I know what it is, I'm no longer interested in finding a copy to play now.
Yeah, I know, in fact I corrected myself like five posts down from that.

That claim is still pretty sketchy though.

I'm in league to agree with this. Based on the extremely rabid and active fanbase and the sort of stuff that it puts out there is definitely an undercurrent of sexualization.I doubt it would be as huge a thing if the characters were mostly male.

This.

I mean, basically, Lilith made a big OP explaining her love of Touhou, and now there's poo everywhere. I think I missed a lot of important things.

It doesn't help that my knowledge of Touhou consists mostly of this.

To be fair, there's an obscene (literally) amount of My Little Pony porn. I wouldn't say that it's because MLP is sexualized.

God Tohou is awful.
I mean it's everywhere, and it's just banal.
Also it seems the OP doesn't want to be here.
Might I suggest a Touhou board where you're love of this will be reciprocated?

That may be true but the fact that touhou heavily features "lolis" leads me to believe that it isn't totally the same thing. I mean most fandoms produce some amount of porn as a result of weirdos who admire or adore the characters a little too much. I think I might be being too hard on it though.

That's all you really need to know anyways. This one song may as well be touhou itself. it gets remixed with more than just clowns:
it even absorbs other songs.

*drinking Metallic Tea-Xi*

Casual fan of the series here. you disappoint me Lilith!

first of all, while you got Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil in here, what about the other games that came before? 5 games came before that, and Its important for that to be remembered.

Another thing, you went to the memes to quick! you talked about Cirno, referenced nine-ball but you only side mentioned Utsuho? no mention of Patchouli? Penta Flare spell card for you.

What about the fact that as the series has gone on, the cannon games actually do begin to so a variance. what about Shoot The Bullet and Aya? yeah, the core gameplay is about the bullets. analyzation of the patterns, mastery of the timings, and when your NOT being assaulted, the pretty designs. but mostly not winding up a bullet-spam sandwich.

by the way, whoever said theirs only fairies as enemies? no. I can also remember crows, books of doom, and even swarms of leaves. it depends what game your playing and what stage. so what if its only bullets, that's most FPS between tank sections, right?

another thing. you went to the memes most people already know. what about the MMD dogfight videos showcasing fanwork of fights as they may have been in 3d?

also, no knock of Civilization. /sigh.

or the mention that the cannon games are pulled together by one man, so the work of the fans stretches VERY far from there. or the Minecraft Gensokyo to scale?

I love seeing some touhou pop up, but I know for a fact id bite at it.

*angry, disgruntled sigh*

Touhou.

Fucking Touhou.

I just want to punch the series in the face. I have no idea or motive to do such a thing; I've never been insulted by the series and I'm actually partial to bullet hell games. But there's something about the series that makes me want to dropkick it off of a building. Maybe it's just the epidemy of what I don't like in otaku culture.

Lilith, the problem is not that people hate Touhou, or anime, or empowered female characters. The problem is you, and our responses to you.

Like EternalNothingness, past experience with threads you create color people's views of the poster. When I go into an EN thread, I expect to see outlandish questions or downright bizarre arguments.

When I go into one of your threads, I expect to see you on your soapbox ranting about how something you care about is allegedly either being ignored or attacked, and your most common response is to either lash out at other posters, act condescending, or act victimized, as though people who disagree with your opinions are outright assaulting you.

You come off as very hostile in your defenses, and previous experiences leave other posters with a bad impression of you.

With that out of the way, I still have a hard time seeing how this is one of the most popular "indie" titles. Minecraft stopped being "indie" when it sold over a million copies, now twenty times that. If Touhou has "millions of extremely dedicated followers", then I would stop calling that an indie title and more a fully blown fandom.

However, with that said, apart from those sites dedicated to Touhou Project, I wouldn't describe it as the phenomenon that you declare it to be. If you wanted to discuss Touhou on The Escapist, then simply asking if someone else has played it would be enough. The amount of sperging you did in the OP gives the impression that you are a hardcore fan, and there's nothing wrong with that. But to use your self described "hardcoriness" as an excuse to sound condescending, and treat this like you are going to convert us into Touhou fans is rather annoying.

Having a long OP describing the games and fandom is fine, but don't expect a warm welcome or the embrace of the community when you explain the fandom with such an air of smug superiority, as if already being a fan somehow makes you an enlightened prophet spreading the word to the ignorant masses.

Sometimes you just have to accept that people have different opinions, and live with that.
