Well, to be honest, Doug did try to abandon the NC character after To Boldly Flee (some say because of an early mid-life crisis), but he pretty much had to return when his old fanbase didn't translate into his new show and he got into financial problems because of that. I would say it's less about NC and Yathzee being "bulletproof demi-gods" and more about them being trailblazers filling a niche with a stable fanbase that can support them indefinitely.

Though I would also add Linkara and Angry Joe to the "perma-list". Oh, and the AVGN, who has the dubious honor of being the only internet reviewer who ever managed to pretty much abandon his original content and persona and still managed to keep his fanbase aboard with other content.

Spoony is a bit of a cock. As a reviewer I preferred him to most of Channel Awesome, especially when he held back on the skits and stuff. But he just doesn't seem like a nice person. Let's not even go into that whole Obscurus Lupa mess (I think it was her? I can't remember).
That entire hubbub was pretty much an overreaction the size of mount Rushmore from every participant. Spoony had another of his depressed/bi-polar periods and he made an incredibly dumb joke (if I recall it was about offering a place for JO in his nonexistent BDSM dungeon), to which Lupa took offense (because "durr sexism!!!"), Spoony reacted the way you would expect any bi-polar person going through a spell would react (read: badly and over-the-top), and in a day the entire thing exploded and Spoony left TGWTG.

This entire incident also pointed out just how thin the "we are all friends reviewing stuff" facade the TGWTG site projected was. They were (and I presume still are) people; with good days, bad days and a lot of petty or serious disagreements between each other. It was a small wonder they managed to stick together for four years as they did...

I like that she didn't post anything onto Channel Awesome, so that her new start will be completely fresh. But then she said a few videos would be uploaded, oh well I look forward to them.

"is it true that you?re an SJW illuminatic fempire who tricked Todd into saying fmnsms? Yes."

I was wondering why I liked Ellis so much.

A lot of it is simply people growing up and growing older. For JessuOtaku how excited do you think she had to be continuing anime reviews she began in her late teens early twenties once she hits her late twenties and real jobs and life start shifting her interests and priorities?

I will miss Lindsey. I always liked her stuff. Heck she was among other things a master or mistress at bringing feminist themes into the discussion in ways that treated both the question, the audience, and those that actually produced the stuff as more or less adults. Unlike some other prominent Youtubers of similar bent she understood context and historical time period. Well done. Her analysis was typically deep, spot on, and informative not to mention funny. She never assumes her audience is stupid. I absolutely love her breakdown of the Lord of the Rings and was hoping she would do a Hobbit follow up.

If you look most of those that we view as more of the more or less bulletproof figures actually came at and came to much of this later in life. After that mid twenties period of self discovery, and this is where they found themselves. I think it gives them a somewhat better grounding and sense of long term and professionalism. If you ever watch any of the Nostalgia Critics behind the scenes stuff you realize that that really is a multi generational family endeavor. And even then he got burned out and retired for a bit.

I can understand being burnt out, but what's up with this? As I recall, she became The Nostalgia Chick by...winning a contest for "Who Wants to be The Nostalgia Chick!" If she was never fully comfortable with the premise, when enter the contest? o.o
According to the blog post OP linked to, she really needed the money.

Ha, that was right around I stopped watching because I foolishly bought into that premise.

Well, duh, that was a mere formality. NC pretty much ceased production of anything interesting (well, interesting to me) after her Roland Emmerich series, primarily due to her landing a real job elsewhere in showbiz.

Which unlike some other ex-producers' on the site (or CA), is for a reason I can actually respect.

Things were seldom harmonious in the TGWTG house.
Spoony's departure from the site was almost certainly more due to internal strife over Spoony's exposure despite his (even then) ever-deteriorating production rate. He was frequently missing quotas and deadlines towards the end, despite effectively getting top billing on TGWTG...speaking of.

Spoony recently disabled all comments on his main site, because every section for like the past three months has just been complaints about how he's getting paid via Patreon to do practically nothing. Methinks Spoony's retirement from the business is all but inevitable this year, because everything (save his own public denial) points to him really not wanting to do this anymore.

Yeah, I just noticed this as well when I wanted to comment on his latest Counter Monkey episode. Then I did a bit of digging and apparently his enormous schedule-slip (can you even call something a "schedule-slip" when the person has no schedule whatsoever...?) was due to kidney-stones and some other assorted illnesses... which I would have found reasonable enough if I didn't have to learn it through a friend of a friend who happened to recall a stray twitter-post or something... Is a short, two-minute video explaining shit too much to ask for? Not communicating one's fanbase is pretty much the recipe for creating a toxic environment...

Kidney stones?? That's the first I've heard of that.
Assume that's true, it'd make more sense to just tell everyone what's up rather than just letting animosity fester for several months before shutting them down entirely.

If he wants to retain viewership (and Patreon supporters), maybe NOT pissing them off and then silencing dissent would be a better move.

So now it looks like more reviewers (Obscurus Lupa, Phelous and OanCitizen) have all left the site. Man, this is depressing, it feels like the end of an era... Imma go watch some videos, hopefully that will cheer me up a bit.

I wonder whether the change to Channel Awesome has also brought on some unpleasant changes to staff policy. Or maybe the new change is just giving them an excuse to bail now so they don't get known for being on it then just leaving so early in.

I think you're pretty much right only maybe these changes started to happen before the launch of the new site. Feel free to check out Phelous' reasoning for leaving here:

Lupa has a much longer post. Yeah, sounds like issues have been around a long time now.

Thanks for digging this up, I was looking for Lupa's explaination in particular. I really liked her videos.

The drama is a bit too much for me. But I wish them all the best reguardless.

Does Oancitizen have a blog? Is there any means by which he's said why he's left as well? I'm quite interested in watching this more closely. Thank you.

Quick question while we're talking about CA/TGWTG, does anyone here know why Welshy left TGWTG? I was always curious about why he just up and disappeared.

Phelous and Lupa keep mentioning "Mike". Mike J, I assume?

Anyways, it kind of stinks when business management gets in the way of friendships, but that's just how it is.
I hope not, I rather like him. And besides isn't he in England? I thought they were talking about people specifically in Chicago where they are head quartered.

I can't help but agree with your last statement though. It is sad but this is also pretty typical.
