I'm sure we've all seen the trailer for the new DS Zelda title, Spirit Tracks.

Honestly, when I first saw the trailer, I also felt a strange mix of emotions.

But now that I've had time to think about it, it looks like it would be just as good as any other Zelda title.

But here's the interesting thing; If a console title (Wind Waker) inspired a portable one (Phantom Hourglass), could it go the other way as well?

Could the next Zelda for the Wii be set outside of a medival setting?

Honestly, I can see it working; a few large settlements with large tracks of land seperating them, with scheduled trains running between them. Like in Galaxy, it would allow Nintendo to "split up" sections of Hyrule, alowing for greater graphics between them.

Beedle could travel around on the rails with a pump-cart, and with the right tweaking you'd actually have to purchase supplies while on your journey, without it being a trek all the way back to town.

There could be some quite action filled sequences where Link fights enemies on top of the cars of the train, and some beautiful panoramas while traveling (Just imagine traveling up Death mountain)

Anyone else see how awesome this could be? Or does anyone out there think the very concept of link on rails is a sin against nature?

You have adeptly explained what my hopes for what this game could both be and cause before I could.

But anyway, yeah, I do think that, if this game is good enough, and there is an overall positive reaction to the game when it comes out, then they might start advancing the technology in the series... well that, or they will have a classic "Magic vs. Technology" battle, preferably with Link using both, possibly fully intergrated (Bomb Arrows enchanted with Ice that, when they explode, send shard of ice everwhere, freezing whatever the shards touch).

I think it could be cool. The Gorons in Twilight Princess were already sort of post-industrial, what with the giant cranes and factory-like design.

I think it could be good, but instead of just the addition ofthe train, make it a hyrule styled fantasy plot in an industrial style setting with the magic combined with early technology to a degree. Not like they do in final fantasy either, I had something different envisioned.

The reason I say this is because the moment you mentioned battling enemies on a train, I instantly had an image of fencing and old style pistol dueling (obviously your fencing would come before gaining the master sword).

And have the timed game like in Majora's Mask, I've only played a small part of it, but the feeling I got when I was given 3 days and no way of turning back the clock. Then when I finally found out how to get the ocarina back I was shocked to discover that I had to wait until midnight of the final day.

Oh and instead of an ocarina of time, have a magic stopwatch. Yes all this could be a different game and still work, but its the lore of hyrule and the setting that would add to the mystique. Plus a new setting in regards to time could add the originality people pine for when it comes to zelda games. Something tells me the temples would need to change somewhat to suit a new age.

Personally, I believe that hand-held firearms would be a step too far, seeing as it would throw off the balance of combat a little too much.

Maybe one day Nintendo will develop a game that DOESN'T feature Mario, Link or Samus. Now THAT would be truly mind-blowing.

I'd be happy if they could just have one story where Zelda does not get kidnapped. I know she's blonde and all be Jezz. For him to keep saving her she must be able to suck the moon threw a straw.

Could be given to a boss or two, reflecting that the idea of firearms has recently been introduced to the world. But I wouldn't like the idea of firearms (musket or not) too much elsewhere in a Zelda game.

I can just picture Link with a duster hat and a musket.
Change Navi/Midna into a Eagle and were set!

No wonder Her and Peach were together in the Story Mode of SSBB. There both blonde, princesses and continiously keep getting captured.

I'm talking old, old style, meaning the kind where it actually takes longer to load than it takes to draw a bow. And personally Ithink if the world is gonna develop then its going to eventually have gunpowder and the next logical step is firearms.

But as you say, it could be the idea for a single boss fight, the boss throws you a pistol and you have a duel. Then when you go to leave the temple the gun crumbles to dust or gets stolen or something.

That... acutally sounds pretty badass, really.

A question, though; Do you think Ganon or Zelda should have major roles in this game? If not, then what should be the primary event that drives the game?

Thinking about it, it'd be interesting if Ganondorf (or a decendant) played a similar role as King Bulbin from Twilight Princess: a consisten foe that you encounter from early on in the game.

Sorry if I'm double posting, I'm hoping someone else posts before I finish this.

I'm just imagining using the stopwatch idea I mentioned for slowing time in battles... I know, its a bit overdone, but I'm just considering how awesome it would be opening up someone's guard before stopping time to finish them with a thrust.

To prevent overuse, the stopwatch/pocketwatch could have a limited number of uses before it breaks and requires fixing by a tinker which costs a lot and requires a bit of a trek (just enough to discourage overuse) also it could be required in puzzles to do with timing.

The royal family of Hyrule has been overthrown, and now exist amongst the ordinary middle class citizens, so if Zelda does get into trouble then its not going to be the huge deal it normally is. Alternatively, the aim could just be to restore the true royal family with the new one having no respect for the culture of the land (deforestation in the lost woods perhaps). Zelda could be part of a rebel resistance, based on the sheikah (or whatever they were called).

Heck you could even begin by working for the new royals and only starting to work for the good guys when made aware of your lineage.

As for Ganon, I'm thinking his chance of being restored has long gone, the people have forgotten his name even his descendants (new royal family?) have no record, its been erased from history and the only way to restore the power that was lost (just the power not Ganon himself) is by a ritual that requires his name (thus the destruction of hyrule's sacred places, to find a record somewhere).

I'm imagining a main protaganist being basically like link, a colleague in the royal guard and a friend, except he's also the new prince and thus capable of inheriting the dark power. This guy should either be the final boss, or as an extra twist, he should aid you in a final battle against his father the king (or mother the queen).

I know its a lot of cliches but I'd play it.

It reminded me of Transartica which is an unusual game to be reminded of.

I like the idea of Zelda games shifting to other settings with new tools and challenges. For some reason I think that a Three Musketeer setting would be great, maybe because Link reminds me of Dogtanian from the old cartoon.

Meh, that sounds a little TOO complicated.

Think about it; Ganondorf is supposed to be the leader of a band of thieves, so why not play on that particular fact?

Honestly, it seems to me like this is proof that Nintendo is scraping the bottom of the barrel with Zelda. Trains? I'm guessing that in the next Zelda game Link's going to play tennis, golf, and Monopoly with Zelda and Navi.
