And once again, Tim Minchin brings some lyrical, level-headed response:

OT: Harmless joke blown outta proportions(just like these juggs, eeeeeeeh?...).

Yes its a thing. Yes its gotten out of hand. No you can't do anything about it, sadly. My advice is to ditch the lot of them and join the "you're all idiots and I can't believe you can't sit down and talk like adults" club. We can get T-shirts if that'll interest you.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: you can't have a discussion on the internet. You can't have an argument on the internet. What you CAN have is a flaming row with everyone yelling at each other.

What we have right now is the internet equivalent of two great big armies entrenched opposite each other. On the very front of one side you've got a mass of Tumblr-style SJW people and on the very front of the other you've got a mass of people who hate the former to an unhealthy extent.
There's a third party, though how big or small we are is unknown, who laugh at both sides being absolute twats and detrimental to whatever causes they "fight" for.
We who sit back and watch trainwrecks with a box of popcorn, not because we enjoy the horror of it all but because we find it futile to do anything one way or another, considering the people in charge of cleaning up the trainwreck (whoever the fuck they are) seem to think sending in more trains at high speed is the only way to do so.

It's really ironic to me that fable is actually a rather progressive game series, was there any other game you could participate in gay marriage back before Fable 1? Maybe the Sims?
Well, since you asked, there was Temple of Elemental Evil, which was released a year before Fable (as I seem to recall). An RPG based on a classic (that means very old) D&D adventure. On PC, developed by Troika and published by Atari. Not a particularly great character, but hey. And a decent game nonetheless.

OT: Well, that's what happens when "journalists" take all their clickbait direct from the Blight that is "social media". Some of us actually have a protest thing going on about this kind of crap, among other riting failuers of the "gaming" media. You may have heard of it, though possibly not very accurate info.

As for "laughing at both sides", well, I wish that was still an option. Unfortunately, the outrage mongers have overreached too severely. There's a real concern about that "freedom of expression" thing now.

Can I be honest with you? For just a second?

This mess is tearing me down. Bit by bit. I just can't freaking take it for much longer. I care about stuff like this, but it's slowly becoming more than I can handle. I honestly think this discussion going on for years drastically lowered by opinion of the human race and turned me into a misanthrope...but it's the only online gaming community I really know. And I like being part of a community. Christ, I feel like I'm in a damn abusive relationship. I hate every second of it...but I just can't leave.

Do you know of any other online communities? Ones that avoid this crap?
You know what the worst thing about all of this is? Nerds, once one of the most accepting groups of people I ever knew, are now suspicious of each other.

Before all this mob style social justice was a thing?
You want to play a round of DnD? You've never played before? Let's get your character sheet done!
You wanna play a round of Halo/TF2/whatever MP game you can think of? Sweet! I'm Red, let's kick some Blue ass!
You wanna play some MTG? What color do you play? We have a get together every Friday Night!

After the mob justice?
You wanna come to this convention? Better read this list of 20 rules about how you should treat minorities. Oh, I'm sure you're not transphobic, but just in case you are!
You want to join our University Pokemon club? Sign this release to say you won't sue us if you get offended. (I walked the fuck out of that club)
And my favourite! You posted an opinion on a topic that I disagree with? You must be a GamerGater/Misogynist/Somethingist!

I've actually encountered the aforementioned suspicion in real life. People have actually asked me questions to see if I was the type to get offended before letting me join their group. It's sad because where once anyone was welcome in nerd space as long as they showed a genuine interest, a lot of people have closed off those doors. They're all afraid of who might be offended and who might offend somebody.

The problem is both sides are overcompensating. The social justice side has made it a habit to not just get offended, but to get offended on the behalf of others that may not want it. I think that minorities have it well within their own powers to decide when they are offended and to act on their own volition.

The other side is just sick to death of hearing about gender and politics in their space that was once a place to get away from that all. Sure, some people like to talk about gender and politics but were video game forums really the best place for that? Video games are an escape from the real world for most, can you blame them for getting mad? I'm guilty of getting mad as fuck when a new Assassin's Creed game comes out and the internet gets pissed off that there's no females in multiplayer. I was also just as pissed that Ubisoft gave a shitty excuse when "it wasn't part of our vision" would have sufficed.

Both sides are going overboard. And there's not much one can do about that bar stripping away their anonymity online, which is something I will never, ever get behind.

I give it two posts before someone quotes me to tell me that my experiences are just anecdotal. No shit. I know that, I'm not trying to make an infallible argument here. Just talking about my personal opinion on the situation as is relevant to the post I'm quoting. And it's worth noting, that despite that I've been in arguments with you Ert, and several other users about these sorts of things, I hold zero ill feelings. I don't mind you guys and girls and all other identities and I don't overly mind the conversation when it's relevant and not blown out of proportion.

I'm definitely on the side of games being an escape but I wouldn't even come into these threads if I had zero interest in the topic of gender and politics. I love video games. I believe they have the potential to be the greatest entertainment medium ever. But we need to move towards that goal slowly and steadily. Or else we just hit old roadblocks all over again. See: That Law and Order SUV episode that aired recently. It was a 10 year step back as far as public image goes and both sides are equally to blame for it.

Wait wait wait...Are you saying news sites purposefully use inflammatory article titles as click-bait, and stir up false controversies to increase their site hits?!
Next you'll tell me Fox News makes things up, or Tumblr users are in a desperate race to show which of them is the most oppressed.

This kind of shit has become so routine that I'm no longer amused by it. We need some other type of thing to point at and laugh.

@VanQ Thanks. Honestly I may have gotten heated with you in the past, but I consider you reasonable. I have no problems with people disagreeing with me so long as they support that mindset of theirs with facts and logical conclusions, something you do pretty well.

And I hate to be a negative nancy but...I'm not sure nerds were EVER accepting. Not all of them I mean, but there has been this layer to the culture for a long time. They were accepting of other nerds. People like them and shared the same mindsets as them. That's it. Before we were talking about SJWs, we were talking about fake gamer girls. Before we were talking about fake gamer girls, we were talking about gamer entitlement. Before we were talking about gamer entitlement, we were talking about causal gamers. Before causal gamers, we were talking about PC vs Console gamer (This one never really died). Before we were talking about PC vs console gamers, we were talking about DLC and whether it was ok to get it or not.

There has always been SOMETHING that gamers have been tearing each other apart over. Some group that was ruining gaming and other people arguing over it. It has always been a thing. The SJW mess is just the latest and longest sprout of a trend that has been going on for decades now.

Nerds are just as petty, selfish, judgmental and vindictive as the rest of the entire human race. Some nerds like to say that "Well, I was bullied for my hobby" but that doesn't matter. A majority of people who are bullies were bullied in the first place.

I think your experience of nerds is probably very different from mine because I nearly choked when you described nerds as `one of the most accepting groups`.

Nerds are accepting of the in-group. They are not accepting of anyone they perceive as being in the out-group. And they're obsessed with drawing lines between them.

Though I will add this, even if I find some people on here to be irritating, arrogant or anything else negative -I'm talking generally, I don't feel that way about anyone particular- , if we disagree, I'd still play games with any of you.

Welcome to todays society. On any issue or topic, there are only two positions that are polar opposites of one another. Someone made a joke and you thought it just wasnt funny? Sorry, your choices are "the joke is funny" or "the joke is proof that the person is mega Hitler," anything in between is disqualified.

But yea, the jokes were stupid. Not "stupid and should be torned down and rediculed over how these are terrible humans beings" but "this joke just isnt funny"

Damn VanQ, dos experiences be so anecdotal, yo.

Seriously though, I'd have to agree with Ertt and Phasmal regarding nerd culture. I've been a part of this culture all my life and despite my dedication to it I've been burned by members of it more than any other group. We're flawed just like all other humans, and on the whole, tend to reject things that we perceive as different. Imo schisms like the one we're experiencing now are necessary if our culture is going to grow and evolve. With two warring ideologies fighting for dominance in the culture, it was inevitable it would all blow up like this eventually.

It will fade in time, however. It's just going to be a painful ride the rest of the way down.

You know what you can do until then, guys? Play video games. Seriously, hardly anyone you interact with in online games even has a clue what's going on outside their own games. Even better with single player games, obviously. If you constantly find yourself in these SJW/GG threads just ask yourself these questions:

- Are you masochistic? Pinch yourself. Did you get an erection?
- Are you a hopeless consumer of outrage culture? If you disagree with what I am saying, do you currently have an erection while thinking about your heated counter-point?
- Do you legitimately care about representation and making gaming a safe place for minorities? Don't jump at every shadow, especially if you have an erection. Walls hurt.
- Do you just want to talk about games? Stay out of these threads, especially if they give you an erection.

Yeah, having a weird afternoon...

It wasn't exactly intentional progression. The progremmers were just too lazy to program different AI's for males and females in the game.

Also there's a "World Cleavage Day?" WTF! WHy did I not hear about this. It would have been the perfect chance for me to move these crates of 'Bewb Hats'. Funny joke BTW, low brow but still. I'd have gone with 'Two Pints or 2 Gallons?'

As for it proof that gaming is boys Only. Oh will they be eating those words when World Basket Day comes up later this year. Not to mention the International COdpiece Festival is Glasterpoole this July.

Right, I'm gonna put down my sword.

I know you don't like me. We've scrapped in a couple of threads. I ignore your stuff, I'm sure you ignore mine.

But I know what you're going through.

Right now, there is a great bloody war and it's shitty and it's getting in the way of games. You want to jump in and take part and democracy is not a spectator sport. I get it and I agree.

But you are throwing yourself into this way too hard. Every day you've written another thread angry about something else. You are swinging punches with the rest of the them and giving as good as you get. But you're now getting too involved, and it's getting in the way of the important shit. Games. Community. Enjoying games.

Just learn to stop. Stop getting so involved. If you have something to say, just drop it in the thread and learn to walk away. If someone is saying something you don't like, learn to just not begin an argument and leave him or her to his or her thing.

Focus all this energy into something positive. Write user reviews about games you love. Make a Let's Play. Just retweet and favourite comments you like on Twitter, show a silent support, and then continue with your life.

This massive culture war, it's not going to end any time soon. You need to learn to step back and remember why you're here, and just enjoy some bloody video games.

@L. Declis Don't like you? I don't know you! At all! I'd like to get to know you know you.

And yeah...I am overextending myself. Kind of sad really. I'm basically bashing my head against a brick wall, headaches included.

Thanks man.

As someone that supports gender equality, this is pretty damn stupid. It is no wonder sexism isn't taken seriously.

Considering I never heard of those two site before, I'm guessing they can afford to be unprofessional/ be controversial for the sake of it with their article if it means to get some views on their pages.

We got into an argument about cultural Marxism a long time back, about whether or not Anita had any authority.

I'm glad to have helped. No idea what your favourite game is, but go play it. Don't care if it's PS1 era, go dust the ol' boy off and shove in the CD.

Back when games were fun.

I'd also recommend Tales from the Borderland. Funny stuff. Relaxing too.

If we're going to have a discussion every time a gaming site is unprofessional in their reporting, I'll be eagerly anticipating many more threads about Kotaku's shameless clickbaiting in the near future. I mean, I suppose it might be cool if a black woman was empowered by learning how to drive through GTA, but only if it was actually true Mr. Totilo. Failure to verify sources because you have a nice headline seems a more serious lack of professionalism than what's being alleged here. Or is that not the sort of unprofessional behavior that warrants a discussion?

As pointed out a few posts up, there is already an active thread on this topic. Wanting to steer the discussion in another direction because you don't like what's being said in it doesn't justify a new thread.
