Sprint Functions. I always appreciate it when a game gives me a way of getting from A to B faster, when the situation demands it.

I love the random ramps set up in games during driving sequences, double points if I get to jump a cliff or a bear or something.

In Mass Effect 2, when you go to a Galactic News Kiosk and you hear news developments about your actions from Mass Effect. It's nice because I'll hear something on the news and think "Hey, I remember that."

Things that make the universe the developer has created seem larger and more alive than it normally would be. An example of this would be Mass Effect 2 and is something that a friend and I have discussed multiple times.

Examples within the game are the expansion of the Wards, making it seem like a darker, less clean place with introductions of things like gang violence, the duct rats and the change in the colours used in those scenes.

Another great thing that game does is parodies, great examples being Hamlet, by an all elcor cast, Blasto the hanar jellyfish and the GameStation employee that asks you if there are any games you'd like to trade in. Small quirks like this are what make a decent universe, into something that feels real and gives you laughs at the same time.

Very subtle references to other forms of media.
Subtle effects on character's attire depending on the environment.
Games that don't spoon feed you.

Skippable cutscenes are good, but for me it's even more important to have Pausable cutscenes. Preferrably both at once.

One thing I really like is when crouching makes it impossible to fall off a ledge. So simple, so brilliant and useful, yet I know of only 2 games that have ever used it.

A game world that extends far beyond what you'll ever experience of it. You know, like real life worlds. Also, day night cycles.

And weather. Missions in the rain are by default twice as atmospheric and amazing.

I looooove being able to see your feet in FPSs. It's a little thing, but when I look down and see those tootsies, it's just a wonderful moment.
I absolutely agree. It's a shame how often something that simple is overlooked in games. The first game where I noticed this feature was in Halo, and it made me like the game a lot more. Silly, I know, but it worked.

One little thing in a game that I simply adored was how in Bowser's Inside Story, the Toads would drive themselves into mindless consumerism as an escape whenever anything goes wrong. Eaten up by Bowser? Let's set up a bunch of stores inside his stomach! Peach's castle has been overthrown? Check out the new shopping district we added to our town!

It didn't end there either. Bowser's minions would escape through theater.

Small, yet it gave this amazing amount of depth to the otherwise silly and cartoony Mario and Luigi series.

Another thing that I simply love, if done right... Clothing getting damaged or changed as the game progresses. Best example: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. The Prince starts out fully clothed, but the further you get in the game the more his outfit gets ripped up. By the end, he's running around in his pants. Somehow you get this bigger sense of accomplishment, that you've just barely made it through all of that after a lot of effort, with such a small effect.

That has actually become the very first thing I look for when I get control of my character nowadays.
I remember being so enthralled by the legs in Halo that I had to shoot them...and promptly killed myself by doing so when I found out you could hurt yourself by doing so XD

Going off of the views in FPSs...when you don't feel like a midget because of the camera height in the games, that's just wonderful as well. I was pretty happy in Killzone 2, and then I saw that I was apparently controlling an irate hobbit. That killed a bit of the immersion...

Ooh! Yes! The only game I've played that I noticed the clothing get damaged in was Batman: AA. After a big fight, looking through the holes in his cape was a real "damn..." moment.

i like being able to play for the bad guys once in a while, see how things turn out against the opposing forces

i also like comical quips and insults every now and then

references to previous games and like fable 3 was rumoured to have - the acheivements you reached in the previous (if a sequel)

I like how in FPS/ general shooters if you shot glass, it gets a little bullet hole instead of outright shattering. Granted they do after X shots but still. I also like shooting water coolers and kegs and stuff and watching the water flow out from the bullet hole you shot into it as opposed to anywhere else (like the kegs in Dead Rising 2)

I also like how some game worlds open up to the point that you see what NPCs 'eat'. I believe Gyshal Pickles became a favorite food of Stainer in FFIX. Not to mention all of that Nuka-Cola and, Sunset Sarsaparilla.
