I absolutely agree. It's a shame how often something that simple is overlooked in games. The first game where I noticed this feature was in Halo, and it made me like the game a lot more. Silly, I know, but it worked.

Another thing that I simply love, if done right... Clothing getting damaged or changed as the game progresses. Best example: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. The Prince starts out fully clothed, but the further you get in the game the more his outfit gets ripped up. By the end, he's running around in his pants. Somehow you get this bigger sense of accomplishment, that you've just barely made it through all of that after a lot of effort, with such a small effect.
