Who here is lucky enough to live in a city with good local music? I, for one, hail from Atlanta by way of Chicago, both of which either have or had really, really good music scenes. Atlanta has a really good stoner/doom metal scene (Keep in mind that we've given the world both Mastodon and Zoroaster), and a REALLY good garage rock/punk scene that ties in to the Horror/Exploitation film scene, though I don't think any of the garage/punk bands from around here have garnered much attention outside of the state, with the exception of The Luchagors, who I understand were pretty big for an all-too-fleeting moment. And Chicago, of course, is one of the best punk cities in America, having spawned The Effigies, Naked Raygun, Screeching Weasel and Rise Against amongst others, in addition to being the city that gave the world Ministry, Smashing Pumpkins and Big Black, a band I love so much that I use one of their album covers (the record is called Atomizer, btw) as the picture that's supposed to represent me on my internet forum of choice.
What about you guys? What does your local music scene look like?
EDIT: Here are a few videos of acts hailing from both Atlanta and Chicago that I like.

ATLANTA:
The Luchagors - White Boy. Hey, Shane.
Zoroaster - Odyssey. Excellent, trippy doom metal.
Mastodon - Blood and Thunder. The one and only. The biggest rock band to come out of Atlanta in a while.

CHICAGO:
Big Black - Bad Penny (Live). One of the most important cult bands of the past 25 years, leaving a lasting impact on punk, metal, and alternative rock. The frontman, Steve Albini, was a classmate of my father's at Northwestern. The radio show my dad hosted on the college's radio station immediately preceded Albini's. They apparently got on well, which is a minor miracle, given Steve Albini's reputation for being a bit of a dick.
No Empathy - Ben Weasel Don't Like It. CRIMINALLY unknown 90's punk. These guys should have been huge. To this day, I have no clue why they never really went anywhere.
Articles of Faith - My Father's Dreams. Cool old-school hardcore act. I think they were on SST for a while.
Muddy Waters - Got My Mojo Workin'. Why, look, kids. It's Muddy Waters. If you have ever enjoyed a rock song of any stripe or subgenre, especially if the song you enjoyed came from a British band from the '60s, you owe Muddy Waters a thank-you card.

Ministry formed from Illinois as are Smashing Pumpkins and Big Black are from Evanston, Illinois. None of those bands come from Atlanta.

EDIT* I am from a small town in Ireland, so maybe my American geography isn't that good. I mite of made a mistake here.

No, you just misread my post; I was born in Chicago but I live in Atlanta, so I mentioned both scenes in my post. You missed the following crucial sentence fragments: "...from Atlanta by way of Chicago, both of which..." and "And Chicago, of course, is one of the best punk cities in America..." I know that all three of those bands are from the Chicagoland area - that's why I brought them up concurrently.

I am from Lincoln, Nebraska. Not much happens here music wise. Everyone is just all about football and I couldn't care less.

Central Florida is completely overrun with goddamn folk music! XP

I remember that one guy, and I swear I am not joking and I am not exaggerating, had about 12 songs (out of 13) that were played in the same exact melody in the exact same key with the exact same chords but different lyrics. Same song, different lyrics.

Sigh ... :-(

I never that! Then again, I've never been into that kind of music. I'm more of a Prog Rock guy myself.

I hail from a cluster of 3 small towns in Ohio of around 20,000 people a piece. We have always had a rich music scene filled with talented bands ranging from skater rock to death metal. The most recent and overall noteworthy bands to emerge from my little corner of the world are The Devil Wears Prada and Miss May I (even though The Devil Wears Prada claim to be from a bigger town down the road). It's weird seeing people in a band that big at a local store when they're home from a tour.

Dude, then you should be covered! Check out Unquestionable Presence by Atheist and/or Focus by Cynic and tell me that you weren't completely floored by those records..

I live really close to Boston which basically is the founding place for hardcore punk. It also gave the world The Pixies. Other than that I pretty blank on whats been coming out of Boston musicwise though I assume its some variety of indie rock music.

Plagued by indie rock kids. Sucks. Liverpool is a special place though. because of its history with the beatles, venues essentially exploit the crap out of any music night so all you really get is indie trash where the bands have lots of mates, but they cant play for shiiit.

having said that there is a pretty decent post rock community around here, and I have a mate who is passionate about establishing a accoustic and singer/song writer scene. And im part of a Uni society that has a bunch of awesome bands of no particular style (from electro to blues rock to alt rock to metal) but thats all to do with the work we put in.

Im really sick of 'promoters' that dont promote and just sit on their fucking arse, leach of bands and expect to make a profit.

All the bands nearby me are either metalcore or pop punk with no originality whatsoever. There's only one band that's even outside of those two genres, and they're about to break up. They weren't even that good.

Nothing against those two genres, btw. It's just that there's an overload of them, so it gets annoying.

(South Jersey, so I guess you could say the Philadelphia area)
