so, this is not really new that the internet is changing the way people communicate. But what do you think that the actually effects will be. This is years in the future i am talking about and i am not saying that it is good or bad, only that language changes and i think that the internet is one of the things that is changing our language.

but what i am asking is what those changes will be.

i am rather conservative here so i'll give you mine.

* The actually spelling of some words will be changed as per their web abbreviation (thx, sux, ppl, w/).
* The use of capitalization is going to change. It won't been needed to show the beginning of sentences or indicate proper nouns. But it will be used to show exclamation instead. (WOW!!!, did you see THAT!!!).
* In some cases abbreviations will become words in their own right. (brb, imho, lol).

so, what are they going to teach in English classes in the future?

I actually think there will be no long term effects, if anything POSITIVE effects.

Think about it, 20 years ago not many people actively wrote, and typed nowa days I type atleast 20 paragraphs every single day. That's probably alot more than what they did back then.

Admittedly, there will be some negative effects that happen with shortening typing, such as "u" for "you" but honestly, that is easily corrected when "Officially" typing.

Just my $0.02 .

I don't think the internet is going to have any effect on the way English classes are taught. It won't effect proper English, to the extent you believe. I don't think it has that kind of power. The only thing I see it influencing is how children talk to each other. In that fact, it already has. I hear some teens/children actually saying "BRB", "LOL" and alike.

I think good sentence structure has begun to fail, as well as basic spelling and the overall size of vocabularies. Also, basic punctuation and capitalization rules are being forgotten, which the creator of this thread has so kindly demonstrated.

If I was the teacher and you were the student, I would start with the following concepts:

* Capitals belong at the start of the first word of a sentence.
* "Actual effects", not "actually effects". "Actual spelling" not "actually spelling".
* The phrase "think that the" is too wordy, "that" is redundant.
* In the first sentence "this" is incorrect usage, either substitute with "it" or rephrase the sentence.
* Don't start a sentence with "but".
* Capital "I" should be used when referring to the first-person, as in "I" and also compound words like "I'll".
* Do not use more than one "and" in a sentence.

As long as the Escapist becomes the dominant website on The Internets, everything'll be fine, and proper language will remain!

I will set fire to the internet before I allow that to be considered proper grammar.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself "iamnotincompliance... that is an incredibly stupid name, you do realize that, don't you?" Yes I do, but it's far too late to do anything about that now. You might also be thinking "iamnotincompliance, just how do you propose to set fire to the internet?" I grant you it won't be easy, but rest assured, with a little due diligence, it can be done. Yes, there are some things I'll miss, like this place, but life goes on.

And if you're one of those thinking "iamnotincompliance, first off, you can't start a sentence with 'and', and second, who are you to propose such massive pyromania when you can't even capitalize your own stupid name?" I would be one to propose such massive pyromania, not because I'm too lazy to tap the shift key, but because it gives that suave, cool e.e. cummings vibe. Also, you can start a sentence with "and" for dramatic effect. You're just supposed to use it nearly as often as I do, ruining the effect for everyone else.

Now let's hear no more of this silliness.

Well, being on the internet made me use grammar MORE. It was mostly the forums and RP servers for games, though. It depends where you were most of the time.

I know nothing about how ordinary people will end up in the future, because of the internet. I am not ordinary in any sense of the word. I am a writer, which means that I must be at least halfway out of my mind, and I have certain personal issues that just make me different from you. Any of you. It happens, so don't get tempermental over it.

Now, as a writer, I don't feel I really should give a damn about how YOU write, because I get rather harsh on myself when I make a typo, especially an embarassing one. However, one thing I can be assured is that while I won't go grammar-nazi on you all, I will keep up to snuff in terms of ME.

So, if all the rest of the world suddenly degenerates into this net-speak business or - god help us - leet-speak, at least there will be this tiny island of a man who would speak and write normally. By that logic, whoever's there should then crown me a literary genius and make me their king.

Hey, I can dream, dammit.

There won't be, because language doesn't change very quickly.
Way to miss the point. >_>

I predict that by how the Internet has the ability to instantly delete anyone's grammar skills whenever they sit down in front of it, future generations are going to get taught troll language in schools.

I did kind of realize that about an hour ago, yeah.
I still stand by my point that it'll make no lasting impact whatsoever.

And "lol" will simply become an acceptable word.
In an effort to keep the english language 'dignified' they'll teach 'lol' as spelled phonetically, 'lawl'.
