2 months for a break every year, during the summer and I'm fine. (My school gets like 3 1/2 months off.

at my old school (in america) we had 12 week vacations... which was pretty cool but in my current school (in Scotland) we have 6-8 weeks in summer but alot of breaks during the school year.. i think i prefer it that way so i'm not retarded when we get back... and i get breaks during the year
I seriously doubt longer hours will help. I used to know a guy from Japan and a few from China, which I'm told have very good systems and 6 days school weeks. They all said the same thing: 7-8 hours in a day is insane, and by the end they were burned out.
I can see extending the year with lessening time-per-day on the grounds of keeping students and teachers fresh; but extending the year, extending the days and (because this always happens) still piling on homework, and you'll be sitting on a powderkeg.

Since I have to elaborate so this isn't a single word post, America's school system is severely lacking in most parts of the country. First and foremost I want to see teachers who can answer questions without using their little teachers edition book. If you're teaching a subject you should know the subject, not just where to find it in a book.
Betters schools would resolve this issue. If school systems weren't so afraid of their damn students--this wouldn't be an issue. But it's all about "political correctness" and "self-esteem" and crap like that.
If a teacher could cuff a kid for mouthing off in class, you'd have less of it. That's not child abuse, that's disciple. It's reminding a child that s/he is not the one in charge.

Anyway, year-around schooling and uniforms--bring 'em on. I think it would be beneficial.

Pretty much this. More time won't fix the things wrong with schools, not in the slightest. Hell, I'd say they have plenty of time as it is, it's just used badly (science is a joke, and health must die).cleverlymadeup said:
No. In my school we finish the curriculum a few weeks before the end of school so why not just add more to the curriculum. I mean in one class period it takes about 30 minutes to teach the days lesson so we have about 15 minutes to spare. We have more time for periods why do we need more time for the whole YEAR?

This is a dumb idea. I was stuck in some regular schools for most of my life and I couldn't stay focused on the work. I hated doing it and I was on a borderline path to failure. I finally found out about a school in my area that took in kids who had flunked out of school or were permanently suspended and it's the best thing that ever happened to me.
At this school the days were shorter, and the school curriculum started later then the other public schools. I learned more in those last two years then in my entire time at school. The teachers were all top notch and the classes were all kept rather small. The teachers will not tolerate insolence in that school either. At the beginning of the year there is around 120 or so students in grades 11 and 12. By the end of the year there are somewhere around 60-70 remaining. Those who are gone either didn't care or caused trouble.
The best teacher I've ever had teaches there and I still go visit them from time to time. Nothing can replace a good school system, and no amount of extra time sitting behind a desk is going to fix America's flawed educational system.
