This is not a question as to which game was so hard that you poured hours of game play into it, but rather how much time you spent playing a game (perhaps over and over agian because it was so good, or because it was soooo long)

Fallout 3.
Taking my time, and trying to absorb all of the details, quests, etc, I was able to 100% it (with all of the DLC) in approximately 2 years and a month.

You?

HA I'm quite sure for me it's "The Lion King" on the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis for you Americans..)...
If I'm not wrong that took me somewhere around 10 years... sure partially because I didn't play it everyday and I were 5 or so when I got it, And of course it doesn't have any saving slots... Only picked it up back then because I needed to play something and that was all I had... :)
Last boss fight was the problem by the way clicking the right combo at the right time, at the right spot and so on... The Lion Kings has therefore a very special deep hate/love from me...

Otherwise games I have way to much play time in is probably just Age of Empires 2 and Battlefield 2... That sticks out over the average... Neither is really story driven or in the need for loads of time put in to... Sure a few hundred (playtime) hours in TES Oblivion and Skyrim, And Fallout 3/NV but really thats expected of you more or less..

Morrowind.

The damn game is gigantic. Never finished the main quest, and definately did not complete all quests.

EDIT: Ninja Gaiden for NES deserves a special mention because anyone who says they finished it is lying.

I have about 400+ Hours of Fallout New Vegas under my belt. I've only technically beat the game once. I've reached the "end" with a couple characters, but always put off the 2nd Battle of Hoover dam. I also dug out my PlayStation 2 and finished a save file of Eternal Rings that has been there for about 4 years

Legend of dragoon , i beat it last year for the first time since i got the game back in 2000 . Despite having restarted the game like 5 times . So what , thats like 11 years?

As for actual gameplay time? SMT:nocturne , hard mode. Like 200 hours spent on that damn game , trying to beat it . Freaking hard , freaking awsome.

I spent an absurd amount of time grinding in Star Ocean 3. It may not be the longest I've actually spent trying to beat a game, but it was so tedious it felt like it.

OT: Chess. You would not believe how hard the final boss is.

To EcksTeaSea;

I don't believe you. No one has finished Ninja Gaiden for NES. You must have dreamt it.

For real though, if you did finish it, you are an NES legend.

Other than RPG's a la Skyrim, I'll say Yakuza 4.

There is a point in the game, just before the final showdown, where you can switch between characters and clean up any side quests you've still got lying around. How much time have I wasted doing side quests in that game ... T.T They are so hard to find!

I have no idea why, but I managed to max out the play time counter on Sonic Heroes(over 99 hours) on 2 save files. I still never 100% completed it, I just found it fun.

In the 18 years that I've owned Super Hydlide on the Megadrive I've never been able to finish it. It's an action rpg that was harsh as hell, making you eat twice a day, sleep at the right time and being able to carry only a certain amount of items before you slowed to a crawl.

If you don't eat you die, if you don't sleep you weaken and most probably die and if you're too slow then either one of those things will inevitably happen or you'll be horribly slaughtered.

I got to the end once and only once. Around a year or so ago I tried to finish it on an emulator because the console wouldn't play nice with my tv. "At least my save file wont corrupt" I thought. . . . Last boss kills me, I finish for the day and close the emulator. I load up the next day: rage ensues.

I might try again soon. Maybe...

Persona 4 has got to be up there... I spent about 2 months straight just playing through the story once (it is about 40/50 hours on Easy)

Total grinding time: 30 minutes in the final dungeon. Well gosh darn it isn't that Social Link system just handy to have around? Anti-grind system activate!

Also Fallout: New Vegas, the only game i've found that I can successfully roleplay in without the game going "LOL NO you're doing it this way instead."

Skyrim... Watch and learn

Well, I completed Tales of Symphonia for the fourth time just a couple of weeks ago. I just want to see every character tell their story, and that is only possible in a different playthrough for every side character. After the third time though, I switched to playing in Dolphin for glorious HD.

As it takes about 60-70 hours to unlock all you can in a playthrough, I'd estimate that it will take me about 400 hours to get EVERYTHING. Not much for an MMO, but this is a single-player RPG.

Yea the lava level was a pain but if I got killed frequently enough on it so I at least leaned how to play it half asleep, feels great beating it but due to all the anger it's probably not worth it... :)

Spent ~240 game hours trying to beat the E4 on Pokemon Diamond. Most of that time was trying to figure out what i could do before getting to Sunyshore.

9000 hours on World of Warcraft and I still haven't reached the ending credits. I will keep trying though.

Seriously, I've never played World of Warcraft. I think the longest time I've spent on my first playthrough on any game must be Tales of Symphonia contending with a whooping 140 hours. I got lost on some occasions and I got stuck fighting some of the secret bosses so I spent a lot of time getting better weapons and higher level.
