Final Fantasy 6 was more compelling (to me) in half an hour than Final Fantasy 13 was in 29 hours. I guess it has to do partly with the text-boxes instead of audio dialogue (I'm old-school that way). Another good one to try is Final Fantasy Tactics. If you can grab hold of FF9, it's got a lot of throwbacks to the older games (and is my personal favourite).
You aint just whistlin' dixie, amigo. Let me put somethin' into perspective: seven hours into FF7 you're escaping Midgar. Seven hours into FF13 you've accomplished the equivalent of the bombing run from the start of FF7, and you still don't know what's going on. I don't even know how they put that little content in that much time...
I suggest FFVI and FFIX. IX is actually my favorite as well. :3 But really? Chrono Trigger. It'll make you wonder why Square bothered to continue making games with the FF combat system when they had such a better one at their disposal this whole time. I only just played it this last winter for the first time, and my God, was I missing out. I'm dead serious--it holds up fantastically even alongside the current generation of games, particularly on DS. Get it. Get it now!
Also, might not hurt to try out Phantasy Star 2 and 4. They're a little plain compared with the likes of FFVI and VII, but still quite good and with a flavor all their own... if that makes any sense. Just ... be ready for 80's anime-ness with the art style. Like, big-time. You're gonna wonder who in their right mind made characters' hair those colors.
