I've played part of 1, and 4 and 5. I would honestly start on 4 or 5, probably 4 (but the best FF game is 9.)

Ahh Chrono Trigger, I had forgot to look for that, I always hear people raving over it and I've never played that.
CT kicks any FF games ass from here to...well somewhere. Get it you won't regret it!

FF6 is the best overall, though I have a personal soft spot for FF4 too.

FF1 is fun as a curiousity but it's definitely more of a look at how things used to be than a brilliant experience on it's own.

Actually, the only one I'd really say to not waste your time on is FF5. Terrible story, particularly compared to the two that sandwich it in the series, and a silly confusing mess of a job system.

Final Fantasy 6 was more compelling (to me) in half an hour than Final Fantasy 13 was in 29 hours. I guess it has to do partly with the text-boxes instead of audio dialogue (I'm old-school that way). Another good one to try is Final Fantasy Tactics. If you can grab hold of FF9, it's got a lot of throwbacks to the older games (and is my personal favourite).
You aint just whistlin' dixie, amigo. Let me put somethin' into perspective: seven hours into FF7 you're escaping Midgar. Seven hours into FF13 you've accomplished the equivalent of the bombing run from the start of FF7, and you still don't know what's going on. I don't even know how they put that little content in that much time...

I suggest FFVI and FFIX. IX is actually my favorite as well. :3 But really? Chrono Trigger. It'll make you wonder why Square bothered to continue making games with the FF combat system when they had such a better one at their disposal this whole time. I only just played it this last winter for the first time, and my God, was I missing out. I'm dead serious--it holds up fantastically even alongside the current generation of games, particularly on DS. Get it. Get it now!

Also, might not hurt to try out Phantasy Star 2 and 4. They're a little plain compared with the likes of FFVI and VII, but still quite good and with a flavor all their own... if that makes any sense. Just ... be ready for 80's anime-ness with the art style. Like, big-time. You're gonna wonder who in their right mind made characters' hair those colors.

Phantasy Star was what recently sparked this whole thing. I have the Sega Genesis collection for my xbox360. and it has PS 1-4, the problem is, you have to unlock PS1, and got some reason, every time I do it, it doesn't stay unlocked. So I said F'it and decided to play something else.

I suggest FFIV, its quite compelling and a good overall storyline. FFIX is pretty good too, a lot of the above suggestions I second as well.

FF6. So very, very much. I'll probably get some flak for this, but I'm not really a fan of the other five. Nothing wrong with them as games, they just failed to entertain me at all. Weaker story didn't help any, certainly, though V was rather fun gameplay-wise.

Don't worry too much about playing the PS games in order. Yeah, they DO have a continuity to them unlike the FF series, but they're set 1000 years apart each, so even though they share common elements and will occasionally reference previous games you're getting a whole new cast of characters and a different story entirely. Honestly, you can ignore 3 and 1. 3's horrible and has nothing to do with any of the other games AT ALL, and 1 is in the same territory as Final Fantasy 1--interesting to try as a curiosity, but UNGODLY primitive. Just play 2 and 4 and you'll be fine. But especially 4.

Are you on crack? Phantasy Star 3 is a shitty, shitty game. Anyone who thinks it's good on any level is laughable. The plot made no sense, the programming and design was poor at best, the music was just godawful, the characters bland and generic and the game had an ass backward difficulty curve.
Umm... let's take a closer look at that...

2 is a hell of a lot worse than 3. At least 3 gave us the Job System (primitive though it was), 2 gave us fucking nothing and was horrible all around.

Except the Emperor. The Emperor is awesome.
Job system? Emperor? None of these are in any Phantasy Star game I can name. He's not talking about Phantasy Star 2 and 3, he's talking about Final Fantasy 2 and 3. He's not on crack, he's just not paying any attention to what game series we're talking about.

Uhh, just trust us here, buddy, Phantasy Star 3 is inexcusably bad and has no redeeming qualities.
