I decided on Chrono Trigger, it isnt getting any flak so it sounds like the best choice for now. Till that Dragon Quest 9 hits atleast >->

You cant really lose here, each final fantasy has it pros and cons. if you liked VII you will probably like IX as they gave it a rather nice VII feel as opposed to VIII which went in the complete opposite direction.
IV is really good, VI is standard, V was a bit stodgy but a good game, III was a bit meh, II was alright and I was frustrating. tactics was alright but ive no idea which version of tactics ive played mind.
