I would suggest PokePark: Wii: Pikachu's Adventure because you can't be sad while playing that game, but I don't know if you have a Wii or not.

So I would also recommend the Saints Row games.

Vodka.
Hang on, that's not a game...

Play a drinking game.
With Vodka.

That or Painkiller.
Preferably both.

Katawa Shoujo? It's more of a picture book with music and multiple paths though. And I'm not sure how much you like Visual Novels. Worth checking out if you don't hate them.

hit Gog.com and browse their catalog of badass old PC games. Baldur's Gate? Planescape? Syndicate? Or maybe Sacrifice, the greatest game ever made? All there and all under 10 bucks.. very affordable for someone between jobs.

You could always try Bastion, if you haven't already. I thought it was a great game to lose myself in. At least for 6-7 hours.
Yes. This. Win.

Also, SC2 complemented by the Day9 Daily. It's a really good time sink and Day9 is very amusing.

For me, a relaxing game that had no worries of time or length or real missions was Endless Ocean. I consider myself a gamer who likes challenging gameplay but sometimes, just one for atmosphere

I third this, if that's a thing. Bastion has a beautiful story and great gameplay. Old school and new school at the same time. The more you play it, the harder it is to put down.

Try XCOM: UFO Defense. Yes, it's nearly two decades old but it will still suck you in. It's very different to the games you've been playing and very cheap.

Hello again escapists.

To keep things short and sweet, I'm in between jobs filling out applications like crazy and just want a game that hasn't been done to death, that i feel can really just suck me into it in a very strong form of escapism.

I have games like Skyrim, Assassins Creed, and The Old Republic, but none of these titles seem to be holding my attention because i feel like i've done it all before.

What Original games would recommend to this bored Schmuck who can't even afford an avatar (jk jk i've enough for a rental at least.)
If you're going PC... and if you can still get in by pre-purchasing, I'd put money down on Tribes: Ascend. First person shooter that's very skill based and very fast paced. 2 words: jet packs. It'll take time to master it, but it'll take your mind off of things (or make you rage).

Alternatively, I'd highly recommend The Drinking Game. There are no rules and no way to win. The way you play is pretty simple too. Grab alcohol. Roll a random number generator. I recommend one with 6 possible outcomes.
If you land a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 drink.
Assess problems:
Do you still have them?
Yes - Roll again
No - Text someone

That last step is really important. If you don't text someone, your problems could cease.

Good luck! (Don't actually play The Drinking Game.)

Killer7 is unlike any game I've ever played.

Also maybe check out From Dust, it's a very beautiful and creative god game with a pretty cool and subtle story.

My honest suggestion, which is what I do when my life is being a bastard and I'm worn out on every other genre: Play Civilization. Civ V is a great deal of fun, and nothing helps you forget about your shitty world quite like forging a brave new one that doesn't suck.

Plus by the end I feel like I should run for president, last time I was the leader in science, diplomacy (2 votes from king of the world or whatever, and one of those was basically Nazi Germany being upset because I wouldn't help them crush the innocent), money, and culture, with the fewest number of cities (I think I only had 4 or maybe 5. Beautiful coastal trading towns with acres of untouched farmlands to feed their massive populations) and never once going to war (except to defend my beautiful lands, it turns out that it's absurdly easy and cheap to create and maintain a really powerful defensive military, so long as you keep it defensive. Who would have guessed constantly looking for war wasn't a sound political agenda?).

I would kill to live in a world where that's the sort of country we're shooting for...

Have you played The Witcher 2? One of the best games to come out in recent years, both if you ask players and critics. You could always revisit old favorites. KOTOR, Baldur's Gate 1/2, Neverwinter Nights 1/2, Final Fantasy 7/8/9 (the ones I think are good, of the ones I've tried or seen). Metro 2033 is amazing, just finished that. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a game I played like crazy when I was younger. How about those?
First off, FF8 sucks, in the worst way. Any RPG world that levels with me gives me an excuse to not play it.

Second, have you not played 6?! Good god man, that game is a masterpiece!

Wow this thread took off like wildfire. I've beaten bastion and i loved it, just didn't feel like playing it again. There's actually quite a few games on this forum that i've not even heard of let alone played. I just got back from the gym and i do feel relaxed so now i'm just gonna watch a couple episodes of anime with the wife then get back to playing Enslaved, which i rented today. It's a good game, very pretty. For the moment it seems like exactly what i needed. casual, pretty and involving (in terms of story)

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, keep em commin please!

Thanks!

p.s. I'd LOVE to play the drinking game but i'm on a diet so no booze for me till at least sat.

:p
