Vampire Hunter D is a good one. It's kinda gory, it's super natural, and has a decent plot that is enjoyable. Code Geass is also excellent, but that's mainly action and boobs.

Romance/Comedy you say?

CLANNAD

That is all...

I'd recommend Elfen Lied, but that anime sucks donkey balls compared to the manga. Avoid the anime, read the manga.

Country
United States
Freezing (well it's gory)
Bokusatsu tenshi dokuro-chan (insanely gory but comedy)
Hellsing Ultimate (kinda mainstream)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (VERY mainstream but it becomes very gory and lovecraftion in the movie)
Soul Eater (Insanely good, fairly well-known)
Excel Saga (crazy and fun, the final episode was banned from being shown on tv, one scene has a pedophile taking a 9 year old to a love hotel and somehow makes it one of the funniest things ever animated) and made one of my favorite amvs of all time
<youtube=KYS6NxXNn6E>
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (just try it)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (crazy popular but JUST WATCH IT!!!!)
Beelzebub (Freaken Hilarious)

how would you define mainstream?because the ones you listed are overly-long cash-cow series.

Eever watched Elfenlied...?
yes, ill edit my main post with what i have watched
Try out Clannad as well. It's a great romance and an even better comedy. It's actually more focused on character development, background, and comedy in the first season, but has a much more serious tone, focusing quite a bit much more on romance.

It has a great amount of comedy, but also seriousness and sad, depressing crap. You'll get the sad stuff in season 2, mostly. It has a great story, and you'd feel like crying in many instances, guaranteed. Great anime, you should try it. I recommend avoiding the Elfen Lied anime. If you don't like it, try the manga, you might like it better. Then ending is different, the story is longer, and the ending is better, more touching, elaborates more on many details the anime never could, etc. etc.

I'd definatly suggest Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, cause its my 2nd favorite. As for a gory/psychalogical/mystery I saw that you'd seen the Higurashi stuff, but I didn't see Umineko no naka koro ni, or Where the seagulls Cry. I would suggest this one to ya ;)

my favorite recent watch was Baccano! - really great if you ain't seen it, highly recommended and has everything you're looking for (gory, horror, supernatural, Mystery, and romance/comedy . . . well, sort of).

also, I would recommend the new Helsing - way better then the other series they made and seems to be faithful to the manga too, if that counts for anything.

I'm gonna say....... Hellsing Ultimate. My avatar is a small taste of the best vampire anime ever.

Angel Beats!..... definitely. Amazing anime and it's only 13 episodes. Really emotional, funny and has some pretty decent action scenes.
