code geass. it is the best anime i have ever watched. so very, very good.
also deathnote is a good bet for a decent story that will keep you guessing. full metal panic. and the new full metal alchemist, its following the manga.
berserk is a very mature anime, lots of gore and fighting.

also la blue girl :| dodgy stuff right there.

I'm not into anime really, but I do want to see Hellsing (although I note that's already on your 'viewed already' list). However, the only thing I'm looking to see otherwise at the moment is Elfen Lied. Maybe watching them I'll get more into anime.

i would start to watch Fooly Cooly cause it is really good and only 6 episodes lol

also you should watch Hellsing Ulimate is it alot crazier than just hellsing

Bleach is also good but has 219 episodes right now alot of fillers but season 1 and season 2 are really good they have like some of the best fight scenes in them.

Elfen Lied is pretty mature and got some gore in it and is only 13 episodes i think been a while since i watched it.

I'd recommend Detective Conan. Now, it is ridiculously long, but you only really need to watch the first couple of seasons before they start running out of good ideas for cases, so I'd say that's close enough to "limited run" for ya :p And it is very good, up until above mentioned time frame, then it starts to fall off a bit.

Also hard to believe no one has mentioned One Piece yet. Get a fansub of it, the 4kids "english" version had its intestines ripped out and replaced with cotton candy. It's another one of those long 300+ ones, but unlike the previous mention I tend to think that it stands up to the test with nearly every episode. There's actually one overarching story, several arching stories below that that tend to mix into each other, and then yet another layer below that which usually consist of 3-4 episodes mixed into the next layer up that break up your attention. You know, kinda how most shows nowadays have two stories running at once each episode, only not as forced and they still tie in to the main plot in their own way.

Yeah, I'd say try One Piece first :p It may not be the most intelligent anime, but it certainly is entertaining. Plus even the "filler" arcs last 2 or 3 episodes, so they're their own stories and not just random fluff.

Ok, my favorite anime that I'm going to have to recommend is Rurouni Kenshin. It's set during the Meijji Era where a wandering samurai formerly a hitokiri(manslayer) tries to atone for his sins of manslaughter by protecting lives rather than taking them. It lasts about 95 episodes with 2 movies named Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal and Samurai X: Reflections. It ends fairly sadly, but IMHO it's a good anime to watch, if you can get past it's fairly light-hearted beginning and it's somewhat loss of momentum after the Kyoto arc.

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad is a pretty decent anime. Not fantasy or anything like that; just about a kid and his band rising through the ranks. Really well-voiced, in both English and Japanese. The songs that the band plays are written for the anime specifically by bands like Tropical Gorilla, THE BEAT CRUSADERS, like that. They're not bad either, although the Japanese Chiba is a far better singer.

What about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? That's a good one; funny, got some good moral issues in it, and the second season is just starting up in Japan.

I second that recommendation.

I also feel the need to mention that both my and vasudean's avatars are of the main character Kenshin Himura.

Berserk and Elfen Lied are epicker. Berserk is 25 episodes and introduced me properly to the genre, Elfen Lied is 13 episodes and brutal.

I want you to know I created this account just to tell you to watch Gungrave.

You seem to have enjoyed Cowboy bebop, Whereas Gungrave has a deeper storyline, interesting developing characters, halfway decent action, and an end theme so fitting that I still take the time to watch after ever episode. I'm nearly done the series (Dual season Ie. 26eps) and the End theme while still the same still fits perfectly.

I would also like to second the motion for One Piece (French influences), but ONLY subtitled. 4kids made some charters sound retarded, Literally, Sanji (A cook who fights with his feet only) sounds like Bullwinkle from that old cartoon. Storyline is good, Characters have their ambitions and there have been a couple times that the show has made me burst into laughter like a little fat kid who loves his cake. As for how to go about finding the old episodes up to current (Episode 400 is due to come out this week) you'll need to follow some different groups including but not limited to Nakama fansubs [http://www.nakama-fansubs.com/], Kaizoku fansubs [http://kaizoku-fansubs.com/], Vega punk [http://www.vegapunk.com/news.php], Instantz NoobProduction [http://www.instantz.net/anime/One_Piece.html], and Yibis [http://www.yibis.com/].

Bleach(spanish influences), is only good through the first story arc, after that it gets filler'd, reduction in mature content'd, re-filler'd, slight improvemnt before dropping down again'd and makes me wish so very much it could go back to the way it was earlier.

Deathnote is a very well done mature Anime with very appealing art-style, intense depth, and will give your brain a bit of a workout too.

Hellsing Ultimate: Mandatory.(European influences) I'm am buying them by the DVD when the come out over here they are that good. Go buy the Manga too.

Elfen Lied (German influences) was claimed to be the most provocative of it's time for the first seven minutes of the first episode. Certainly worth watching.

I would also like to raise Spice and Wolf, It's a short one season (13eps) series about a man who comes across the reincarnation of a wolf god. It features strong Mercantile points such as Bartering, multiple coins and subtle changes in their value, 'buying' good relations.
But rather than blather on about more, you can visit a list of animes I have watched here [http://myanimelist.net/animelist/RICKBO] and pm me about any of them.

You might want to look into Mushishi. It's so different a cup of tea from the normal anime that I can't think of anything to compare it too. It's rather subdued, a lot of beautiful imagery, quiet and thoughtful, while there are some intense scenes I wouldn't say there are any "action" scenes or anything. Each episode is a self contained story, but it helps to watch from the first to get a feel for it, and the fact that each episode is self contained doesn't remove at all from its depth. So, if it sounds at all appealing, it's really good, and it certainly gets my vote of approval.

Black Lagoon is one to look out for.

The best animé I've seen in a while is Ergo Proxy - Cyberpunk feel with a good, interesting story with only one completely out of place filler (I watched 30 seconds of it and then skipped it as soon as I could fumble the controls!).

Another one that I quite enjoyed (even with some of the voice acting) was Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 - effectively a re-imagining of the original Bubblegum crisis but with an ending.

It's currently being released, but Eden of the East.
They are also redoing FMA so that it's closer to the manga. I would also suggest Clannad, Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, and School Days.

Excel Saga its a great don't take it so serious series. Its a anime series that makes fun of anime as a whole as well as more of the popular anime series.
