I had thought about getting a similar setup myself, although I'd planned reusing an old case and overclocking the CPU myself. However, I did shite in my chemistry exams and that means that the summer will be spent studying, meaning my computer will do as it is.

Personally, I think the sound system is a bit of a waste of money; when it comes to hardcore FPS gaming, a good pair of headphones is more effective. I'd replace the hard drive with a couple of 640GB hard drives, because while you might be getting less space overall, the smaller hard drives are quicker, and there's no point slowing down the rest of your components with a slower hard drive.

I don't think much of Windows Vista either; I'd be inclined to install the Windows 7 Release Candidate until they release it properly. Finally, because peripherals are a big thing for me, I'd buy the Logitech G9 over the MX 400. I'm glad to see, however, that you haven't decided to waste the money on a Logitech G15 or Razer Lycosa keyboard; the only high-end keyboards I'd be interested in are Das Keyboard and the Unicomp Customiser [http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net//keyboards.html] (the latter can survive for over a decade, and it's based on a design which has units surviving from the mid-1980s), both with very strong spring-based key switches.
I'm not a big one for the cutting edge gaming peripherals really. Just going for some regular stuff. The 1.5 TB hard drive is actually at a very reasonable price of 99.99 so I said why not. I know its huge and probably a waste but it was relatively cheap for the size of it so how bad like. When solid state hard drives become less espensive I'l be buying one of those for running games and programs, but for now I should be ok with my current one.

The sound system is actually very important to me as I like listening to music at obscene volume levels >:)

My understanding of vista is that its not actually as bad as many people say it is, many peoples computers arent actually capeable of handling the demmand it places on ram, this will be fine I hope. I was a bit worried about buying it and was on the verge of buying a 64 bit XP os but I decided against it.

What i have found from when i used vista was that it looked really nice on the front side, but walk around behind the scenes and its a horrid cluttered mess, and the reason it use so goddamn much ram is that because it is cluttered it has to work harder just to find small bits of information.

Windows 7 is better, though - faster on machines with less RAM and overall less sluggish than either XP or Vista - and until March 2010, you'll be able to use it for free via the release candidate. I'd give that a shot instead of Vista, personally (well, I would if I didn't have to repeat my exams this year).
I thought they stopped doing that o_O well I suppose I can give it a go anyway

heh, as I'm doing a Computer Forensics course, I'm supposed to know what a lot of this means, and google fills in the rest of the blanks. I looked mainly at the 2 things that actually matter: the processor and the operating system:
Well the fact that it's FSB based might make it obsolete faster than you'd think, especially with HyperTransport technology already present. If you're overclocking that particular one, there could be bottlenecking issues, so you probably won't get the 4GHz you're expecting out of that, if you do indeed know how to overclock a system properly without destroying it. Also it's only single core... which with an Intel system especially, you'd usually want a dual or quad core, they tend to be more efficient. The advanced technologies in there you probably won't use anyway... But otherwise it's alright. Hell, I use an FSB system at 2.4GHz dual core, but it's a laptop, so that's pretty good :p
As for the OS: Vista Home 64 bit? Well it's not quite as flash as Vista Pro... but that's pretty much the only difference, so you pretty much saved yourself 70 quid for the priviledge of animated backgrounds :p nice.
But for the most part... it's nothing to really jump over the moon about, or force me to read that epic waaaaaall

If they say it, they shall burn in fire for all of eternity. With occasional gasoline enemas.

The motherboard bundle I'm buying come's pre oc'd from 2.6 to 4.0 so thankfully I wont make it explode by tinkering with it. I wouldnt even dare as I really dont have a clue how to do it. Well I know its nothing to write home about, just that it will be capeable of handling the currnet and futrue gaming market for a while at least.

It's light years ahead of my current system though and thats why I'm so excited =D thanks for the advice tho :)

don't worry mate, it's still a pretty good system. I was just pointing out the flaws so you didn't get too ahead of yourself :)

thats one hell of a rig my freind, but you need to toss vista out the window and downgrade to XP until they come out with something better
Something like Win 7? Which has already came out and is free & legal...
Or Linux, which is free, legal and isn't compatible with most viruses and is much faster.
