Well, my parents aren't role models I look up to in anyway anymore and I certainly don't look up to anyone on TV these days.

Tell me Escapist, who should I look at as an example of awesome/morality/success?

[sub]I may or may not read all your responses...[/sub]

Nobody. An important part of growing up is realizing that everybody, no matter how flawless or awesome they may seem, is human and flawed. Looking up to people is a bad idea and can blind you to their flaws. Just be the best you that you can be rather than trying to be like somebody else. And good luck :).

Commander Shepard is like Super Space Batman Soldier of Awesome Guy in Space. That's who I would look up to.

You can't ask someone else who you should look up to. Look up to the people who you appreciate the most. If that isn't anyone, then you don't have to specifically look up to anyone. There is no rule saying you have to! :)

I haven't really looked up to anyone for most of my life and it's working fine so far. Scepticism, logic, and independence are the most reliable ways to get through anything really. If you need a model to look up to, perhaps you don't have enough character of your own.

Maybe Jesus?

Look at it this way: Jesus has been a role model for nearly two thousand years. Sure, churches these days seem like oppressive, intolerant institutions of hate mongering. And yes, many people have done terrible things in the name of Jesus.

But, so many people are willing to criticize Jesus for stupid reasons. They're atheists (look at him like a fictional character if that makes you feel better), they're anti-religion (so why not study that which you criticize?), they know the basic stories but haven't really read the Bible.

Here's the thing: Jesus's story is pretty much buried in the WORST FORMAT EVER. It's like comparing Blu Ray to DVD, except it's fifty steps BELOW DVD. Seriously, "Wuthering Heights" is easier to read than The Bible.

So, without having to waste months trying to understand The Bible, you're kind of stuck with churches and their "interpretation" of The Bible. Imagine trying to listen to your grandfather explain the plot of a really good game, but he only focuses on the parts of the game which imply that homosexuality is bad. That's church.

But if you're looking for a role model, Jesus isn't a very bad choice, just an inaccessible one.

James Bond. But seriously, I don't think anyone can really tell you who to look up to.

You have to lose yourself before you can uncover the truth. God that sounds sappy doesn't it?

Fact is, nobody here can tell you what to do. You've got to figure it out for yourself.

Okay, so I could have phrased that better, but it's 6:28 am and I can't sleep, so you'll just have to forgive me for not being at peak literary skills.

i think you find the best role models in fiction, as characters can be designed to be paragons of virtue and honor, while still allowing you to examine, interperate and criticise their every word and action.
how good a person is as a role model is very dependent on how you enerperate their actions. If you parents an not very good moral exampels you can still think of them as cationary examples, they would basicly serve the same purpouse.

I say idols are fine. Just admit their flaws and strive to achieve their virtues you admire rather than the person specifically. Look back in history if you must to find some legendary people. Like the Greek Solon for example, for all his myriad of flaws he still did what was right for his nation rather than completely self-serving at the possible cost of his reputation and livelihood. I call that commendable at minimum (look him up some time, he did great things).
