LucasArts Admits PS3 Version of TFU Needed Work

Two years later, LucasArts is now admitting that it could have done a better job when making the PS3 build of The Force Unleashed.

LucasArts has revealed why so many people claim the <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Force-Unleashed-Xbox-360/dp/B000R0URCE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1284044739&sr=8-1>Xbox 360 version of The Force Unleashed is better than the game's PlayStation 3 build: It is better. The developer/publisher also explained that <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Unleashed-Collectors-Playstation-3/dp/B003O65UCK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1284044739&sr=8-4>The Force Unleashed 2 won't have any of these problems.

"For me I think I like putting builds on the 360, it's a lot faster," said producer Cameron Suey in an interview with Computer and Video Games. "There were times, especially on the original Force Unleashed, where on the PS3, we weren't quite up to speed. But now I think [360 and PS3 are] so hand in hand that every change we make is tested on both at the same time, side-by-side throughout the whole thing."

I could have told LucasArts that it wasn't up to speed with the console two years ago. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/5311-Review-Star-Wars-The-Force-Unleashed>I reviewed the PS3 build of The Force Unleashed for The Escapist and had the following to say when I finally wrote it up:

[The] worst thing about The Force Unleashed is how buggy it is. Aside from the aforementioned problems, I also encountered things like textures randomly popping in and out of view, a boss battle where my adversary's health bar disappeared (thus making it unkillable), and some severe instances of frame rate stuttering when the action gets particularly hectic. I'm not one to demand perfection from a game, but I do expect developers to be courteous enough to deliver a finished product that will not break and force me to restart my system.

I wound up playing the 360 edition of The Force Unleashed a few months after I wrote the review and found myself liking that version much more. It wasn't perfect, but it lacked any of the crippling bugs I'd originally encountered and allowed me to enjoy the best Star Wars plot I'd come across in a long time. If the sequel manages to provide the same sort of experience, I'll be relatively happy, although I'd be happier if it manages to deliver an even better product.

ya know, playing it on the xbox, i found that stuttering issue to be pretty consistent. granted, it wasn't game breaking, but it did get annoying as hell. i remember one part, where you walk into a room with a force field and some generators, and a ton of stormtroopers run in front of you. the second play through, i actually broke the game, because i knew they were coming and i charged up my force push to knock em all in the force field. whelp, sure enough, it stuttered to hell and back, then froze lol. it was a great game, and i can't wait for the sequel, but hot damn it did have it's share of bugs

It takes a big man to admit they made a mistake. Bit late, but it;s the thought that counts. I have TFU on PS3 and did notice awfully slow texture load times in some parts, but not too many other bugs. Then again I got my copy for £1.99 so I can't complain.

I remember playing that on the 360 and still not wanting to buy it. What else came out around the time of TFU?

I am SO sick of people (mostly Molyneux) admitting they fucked up, and then NOT FIXING IT FOR NEXT TIME!

You know what game developers? Stop telling us about how your next game fixed the problems, and just do it, then you'll actually start gaining trust with consumers

And what about the horrible PC port? Oh man this is so pathetic.

Yo dawg actually we admit TFU is a super bad game yo but dis new game does everything better.

And in 2 more years they'll actually admit that TFU2 sucked hard BUT TFU3 is going to pwn asses...

Such morons.

Of course, the 360 version still sucks ass as well. Just not as much ass as the PS3 version.

Bugs and glitches have nothing to do with the god awful, unbalanced and broken combat.

I wanted to like this game, but I couldn't. There were just so many issues with it.

Hopefully the next one will be, dare I say it, better?

Does this mean I can have my money back then? Seeing as they sold me shit and then lied about it?

Lucasarts is turning into the next Lionhead studios. Butt-ton of promises, dick all delivery on them. It's still an okay game. That's all I can say for it. An OK game. Nothing special except the Force, but you can replace that with the Gravity Gun and it would still be marginally the same. Well, SOME of it...

I didn't really have any problems with the game itself. The story on the other hand was good, up until the end of the game, when it got terrible.

I didn't consider The Force Unleashed to be anything more than a tech demo anyway. Testing DMM(what little of it there was. What a wasted potential) and Euphoria seemed to be the entire point in the game.

Maybe this time they'll actually make a game.
