Praise the gods. All I wanted out of this game was more of the gameplay I love from Bethesda's implementation of the Gamebryo engine. My biggest fear was that Obsidian was going to fuck around with it too much.

Really? You did'nt want the distinctive Dark and Pop Humor that the series is known for that the third on lacked?

It's a whole new section of America, with a completely new story and (rumours) of over 40+ hours of gameplay. A DLC this does not make.

Except for the different settings, characters, story it being closer to the original Fallouts. Yup nothing different...

This is going to fail hard. Everyone loved Bethesda's Fallout 3 because of the atmosphere and exploration, and this made them forgive things like the bad animations (I'm not walking! I'M GLIDING!) terrible voice acting and story ("Fawkes, you go in there and enter the code so none of us die!" "Nup, destiny and all that crap") and shitty gunplay (Guns made no visual impact, and the only thing to tell you that the enemy is getting hurt is a big health bar being chipped down until their head explodes)

Unforunately, I fear Obsidian won't be able to make up for most of these problems without Bethesda's unique brand of atmosphere (and the fact that they are terrible at bugfixing thier games)

Well, a VATS system might not even exist. This guy was not born in a vault. I still haven't finished all the expansions and I will do what I did the last time, i.e. wait until a New Vegas with expansions is released on disc so in probably 2 years, I will give it a shot.
