I was gonna post the Map of Metal myself, but I was beaten to the punch...

Gotta love the occasional bit of "I don't like that particular style, therefore it isn't metal"...
Clarification: Glam Rock is metal, Hardcore is metal, and the old genre colloquially known as "heavy metal" (epitomized to some, including me, by Iron Maiden) is definitely fucking metal.
Even Iniquity is metal... they're just crappy metal. :p

One thing I forgot to mention: there is also man who epitomizes everything that metal should mean. That man is Lemmy Kilmister. As Dave Grohl once said in an interview for a documentary:
"Fuck Keith Richards, fuck all those dudes who survived the sixties flyin' around on Lear jets, living up their gunslinger reputation as they fuck supermodels in the most expensive hotel in Paris. Y'know what Lemmy's doin'? Lemmy's probably drinkin' Jack&coke and writin' another record."
hardcore ain't metal, sorry.

I wouldn't call them straight up Heavy Metal because Heavy Metal is stuff like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and if you listen to a song from whichever of these bands, and then listen to a song from Slipknot, you'll see that there's a big difference.

Also, I'm not sure what would classify as Nu Metal, Linkin Park? Limp Bizkit? Rage Against the Machine? Static-X?
Iron maiden is 80's speed metal, which is shit btw. As for Judas Priest and Sabbath, I can't say I have extensive knowledge of either, but as far as modern straight up heavy metal goes, Slipknot fits it for me.

Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are lame-wannabe-metal-but-still-wannabe-soft-so-the-teenage-chicks-will-love-us. That stuff has no merit. Rage isn't metal at all, more like hard rock and rap. Never heard of static-x. No, I'd say Nu Metal is stuff like Korn and some early Disturbed, but I thought that was the general consensus on the genre. I don't really have an in-depth knowledge of popular metal bands, I can't stand most of them
Wait, wait, wait. Speed Metal? I seriously haven't heard anyone categorize Iron Maiden as Speed Metal. It's always been New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Ah yes, I forgot about Korn and Disturbed. I'll agree with you on that one, also, I'll have to admit myself that my knowledge on "Metal Theory" is rather limited.
NWOBHM was a movement of speed metal bands in the 80's, i'm pretty sure. And there's more Nu Metal but I don't listen to much of it so I don't know. I have limited knowledge on this stuff, my tastes lie more in obscure/extreme directions

Yeah, have to agree on that one. Metalcore is hardcore + metal, but hardcore is just punk

eh, fusion genres being what they are, I'm not about to argue with three folks contradicting me here, I'll just pass on how it was described to me:
"Punk often describes hardcore as hip-hop, metal describes it as punk, and hip-hop describes it as metal. They're all correct."

Protest the hero are awesome.

I'm currently trying to learn all their songs from their tab books (which they did themselves)

Also, if you're a PTH fan, I'd definitely recommend checking out SikTh, who were a huge influence on them (as well as other awesome newer bands like Periphery.)

Tool, Anathema, Dream Theater, Riverside, Opeth, Megadeth, Mastodon, Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Megahertz, System Of A Down, Machinehead. A whole bunch of others I can't think of right now. A lot of them for only a couple songs.

Also, it's always fun to see metal fans dispute which band is or isn't metal or a certain subgenre. Seriously, can someone answer me why metal fans seem to be more obsessed with compartmentalizing everything into neatly defined genres? I'm not trying to offend here, but it does seem a lot more prevalent than in other fandoms. Though the younger fans do seem more prone to it, as the older guys I know generally don't bother with it that much. Or maybe it's just me.

Primordial is a Black Metal band out of Ireland and just plain fucking awesome. A good song by them is "Traitors Gate" from the "To The Nameless Dead Album."
I would rather recommend Gods to the Godless as a starter song. Maybe Sons Of the Morrigan.

OT: I want to recommend two very odd bands.
The first one is Bad Acid Trip. While being Grindcore for the most part, their 2004 album was more in the Crossover-Thrash area. The 2004 release of Lynch the Weirdo was produced by Daron Malakian. And they currently have a record deal with Serjical Strike, which is owned by Serj Tankian, who, like Daron Malakian, was a/is in the band System of a Down.

The other one that I recommend is Gallhammer. An all girl Blackened-Doom Metal/ Sludge Punk band from Tokyo, Japan.
I don't really know how to describe them. Their music is pretty diverse, yet consistent to their styling. The only way to really recommend them is to tell you to check any one of their songs. If you like you one, you will probably like them all. And if you hate one, then you will most likely feel the same way about the rest of their discography.

I'm finding it really hard to find new metal bands these days, aside from like 3 Inches of Blood, and Alestorm (purely for the fun factor), most metal these days seems to be that dissonant deathcore...stuff, or its got a massive injection of Nu-metal in it (which can fuck right off) I'd love a new classic style band but with its own style to emerge as alot of bands sound so samey at the moment. It's not like im opposed to death metal, In Flames and Children of bodom are some of my favorite bands, but they retain clarity and a sense of epicness without just sounding thrown together and a mess.

But yeah: Check out 3 Inches of Blood (like a more agressive version of Judas Priest) or Sabaton (who fucking kick ass) for newer stuff

There is a lot of black metal on this which i can listen to i little bit but i guess i'm a pussy cause i can't really handle it. I like classic metal the most bands like iron maiden, metallica, motar head those sort of bands but i do enjoy other heavy metal like bullet and slipnot but i don't really get that heavy. I like iron maiden the most. I like them because of how tallented the whole band is and not just the lead guitarist. I like how the race at the beggining and the end but throught the middle they slow down. They constantly experementing with dinamics, tempo and key areas other bands fear of dwelling into. Metallica is proberly next on my list for all the soft finger picking songs and the drumming in the heavy songs.
Slipknot isn't heavy metal, not by a LOOOOOOONG shot.
Yes they are. But they're not death/black/whatever. They're just...metal
Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure that Slipknot are Nu Metal.
which slipknot?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUkI_b7Dt9o&feature=related
both suck, just saying.
The more popular one.

I hesitate to call Slipknot Nu Metal because they don't fit the genre compared to other Nu Metal bands. I'd say they're a bit too aggressive, although that's not really a genre-defining characteristic. I still wouldn't call them Nu Metal, I'd say they are more just straight up heavy metal.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are both speed metal. Black Sabbath is doom metal.

I'd say Slipknot is Alternative Metal (think alt-rock, but metal) with Groove and Nu-metal influences. That said, I've listened to only one song of theirs.

After five pages I really have very little to contribute that's not already been said.
Anyway. I have the (probably) controversial opinion that 90's metal is the best. Not nu-metal, fuck off. I mean Machine Head, Pantera, Sepultura/Soulfly, and of course progressive and forward-thinking bands like Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, and, of course, the greatest band of all time, FEAR FACTORY. I'm also very into newer bands like Parkway Drive, Periphery, Your Demise, Kvelertak and Bring Me The Horizon. (Yes, really.)

And now, some of my favorite songs.
