I wouldn't call them straight up Heavy Metal because Heavy Metal is stuff like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and if you listen to a song from whichever of these bands, and then listen to a song from Slipknot, you'll see that there's a big difference.

Also, I'm not sure what would classify as Nu Metal, Linkin Park? Limp Bizkit? Rage Against the Machine? Static-X?
Iron maiden is 80's speed metal, which is shit btw. As for Judas Priest and Sabbath, I can't say I have extensive knowledge of either, but as far as modern straight up heavy metal goes, Slipknot fits it for me.

Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are lame-wannabe-metal-but-still-wannabe-soft-so-the-teenage-chicks-will-love-us. That stuff has no merit. Rage isn't metal at all, more like hard rock and rap. Never heard of static-x. No, I'd say Nu Metal is stuff like Korn and some early Disturbed, but I thought that was the general consensus on the genre. I don't really have an in-depth knowledge of popular metal bands, I can't stand most of them
Wait, wait, wait. Speed Metal? I seriously haven't heard anyone categorize Iron Maiden as Speed Metal. It's always been New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Ah yes, I forgot about Korn and Disturbed. I'll agree with you on that one, also, I'll have to admit myself that my knowledge on "Metal Theory" is rather limited.
NWOBHM was a movement of speed metal bands in the 80's, i'm pretty sure. And there's more Nu Metal but I don't listen to much of it so I don't know. I have limited knowledge on this stuff, my tastes lie more in obscure/extreme directions

There is a lot of black metal on this which i can listen to i little bit but i guess i'm a pussy cause i can't really handle it. I like classic metal the most bands like iron maiden, metallica, motar head those sort of bands but i do enjoy other heavy metal like bullet and slipnot but i don't really get that heavy. I like iron maiden the most. I like them because of how tallented the whole band is and not just the lead guitarist. I like how the race at the beggining and the end but throught the middle they slow down. They constantly experementing with dinamics, tempo and key areas other bands fear of dwelling into. Metallica is proberly next on my list for all the soft finger picking songs and the drumming in the heavy songs.
Slipknot isn't heavy metal, not by a LOOOOOOONG shot.
Yes they are. But they're not death/black/whatever. They're just...metal
Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure that Slipknot are Nu Metal.
which slipknot?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUkI_b7Dt9o&feature=related
both suck, just saying.
The more popular one.

I hesitate to call Slipknot Nu Metal because they don't fit the genre compared to other Nu Metal bands. I'd say they're a bit too aggressive, although that's not really a genre-defining characteristic. I still wouldn't call them Nu Metal, I'd say they are more just straight up heavy metal.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are both speed metal. Black Sabbath is doom metal.

I'd say Slipknot is Alternative Metal (think alt-rock, but metal) with Groove and Nu-metal influences. That said, I've listened to only one song of theirs.
Well... fuck. It looks that I was looking at it the wrong way.

Yeah, have to agree on that one. Metalcore is hardcore + metal, but hardcore is just punk
eh, fusion genres being what they are, I'm not about to argue with three folks contradicting me here, I'll just pass on how it was described to me:
"Punk often describes hardcore as hip-hop, metal describes it as punk, and hip-hop describes it as metal. They're all correct."
What the fuck is that supposed to mean? sounds like some bullshit.

Anyway Hardcore Punk isnt a fusion genre, you can basically describe it as a heavier and harsher form of Punk music.
...you've been talking about hardcore punk this entire time..?

Wow.

No, the Dead Kennedys are not the hardcore genre I've been referring to. Maybe classifications have changed since I was into any sort of scene, but the genre I'm talking about is the one that popped up in the early 90s that people started having trouble classifying... They tended to be called "hardcore bands" around where I lived at the time. The only successful example I can point to is Korn, who I see is now listed under "nu metal" most places... even though they're not really nu metal... but whatever. Please, no more. I'm done with debating semantics.

Otep, Soilwork, Five Finger Death Punch, Dethklok, Mastadon, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Judas Priest, 3 Inches of Blood, Testament. I like all of these bands, but the best? The one that trumps all the other ones? The band that rocked in ways that the world had not before seen? The band that I have noticed has been overlooked by a disappointingly large number of people here?

Motorhead.

But for me, I gotta go with the newer-agey stuff ala Periphery and Animals as leaders
I listened to Periphery constantly a few months back, it's a fucking corker of an album.

I have to check out more of that other band you linked too, I quite liked what I heard.

Also, glad to hear more people liking SikTh. :D

hardcore is a prominent subset of punk. in fact the term "thrash" was originally coined for hardcore bands before the term "hardcore" came about; likewise, "thrash metal" was in large part influenced by crossover bands like dri that played a more metal-influenced style of punk. lots of bleed-over between punk and metal, like crust, grindcore, metalcore etc. even nu-metal took influence from hardcore bands like quicksand, madball, shelter, sick of it all etc.

I really like any metal as long as it has some sort of melody. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the "brutal" death metal bands although I do love myself some Cannibal Corpse.

Opeth (My favorite band, I don't need to explain.)
Iced Earth (Horror Show has to be my favorite album of all time. Horror movies are my thing.)
Amon Amarth (I love Norse myth and vikings, and they make kickass music.)
Tyr (Proof that metal isn't just harsh vocals and banging on instruments.)
Blind Guardian (At the Edge of Time was the best album of 2010... nuff said.)
Rob Zombie (Industrial? I just consider his first album "danceable metal".)

This metal is not metal. It's retarded maladjusted teenagers with too much distortion. I don't know how they got in their parent's make up closet, but it sure isn't helping with public perception. Not to mention that they should have spent all the money they used to buy skulls and 8 crappy ESPs to buy actual guitar lessons.

tl;dr Radiohead is better than any crappy black/death/grind/goat-sacraficing/trying-too-hard/power metal will ever be.
All power to you for whatever crap you shove into your ears but ESPs are damn good guitars! Who the hell can afford 8 ESPs? That's bare at a bare minimum of 8 grand!

Quick list of some awesome bands/artists that use ESP:

I love metal because it's so unique! It's all the same in the sense of what Instruments you'll find in it, but I've never heard so much diversity in any genre other than metal. My favorite sub-genre of metal is Black Metal.
Some Melodic Stuff
Some Satanic Stuff
A Little Atmospheric/Symphonic Stuff
And finally some Depressive Stuff

I kind of straddle a number of metal lines, from alternative to industrial to nu metal, but it's more or less all I listen to. My favorites include Disturbed, Slipknot, Static-X, Five Finger Death Punch, Bulet for My Valentine, and System of a Down - and that's just to name a merciful few. I don't get into much heavier than that, though.
