I guess people have decided that his movies just...suck.
Huh... I quite enjoyed his movies, though I only saw Sixth Sense, the Village and Unbreakable.
aside from Signs, every other movie he's made that you didn't list is regarded as crap. A lot of people don't take him seriously anymore.
sixth sense, unbreakable, and signs were what movie bob said were the good ones. Personally, i think that signs was the only one worth watching, and everthing else he did sucked.

It's M Night Shymalan, the man who gave us The Happening and various other attrocities, people are tired of him.

Ever since the Happening, people have turned against him. The movie didn't look too bad, though the acting wasn't great. People are jerks though and most likely won't even give him a chance anymore.

They obviously didn't.
Yeah, two out of those three are regarded as his only really good movies, and you can be forgiven for liking The Village ;).

But yeah, the reason he is so hated is that not only has he been in a downward spiral since Signs came out (a pretty decent movie), but he refuses to acknowledge it. He is so incredibly self-important and pretentious (he cast himself in at least two of his movies, one of which as the writer who was going to "change the world"), and acts like every movie he has ever made or will ever make is a masterpiece of cinema that no real movie fan should dislike.

I would have groaned at the mention of his name, too

There is something about saying "The Night Chronicles" that feels super duper pretentious when your name is M. Night Shyamalan.

I'm firmly of the opinion that every single one of his movies was a piece of shit, save The Sixth Sense which is held up by Bruce Willis and only remembered because of a "twist ending", and Unbreakable which was ok too.

So yeah, I laugh too every time I see "from the mind of M. Night Shemilanalion."

He also made "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening". Both excruciatingly painful. And while I'm one of the few people who thought "The Last Airbender" wasn't terrible and I don't crucify it at every chance I get, he's short on talent as of late.

He's got a name that's ridiculously easy to make fun of, and he's got a reputation for making bad movies with stupid twists. That's a recipe for disaster, regardless of the fact that he's actually capable of some really great stuff.

Thing is, I'm not quite sure why... there was nothing particularly funny in the trailer, which is here:
My brother and I are particularly squeamish about horror movies, we both found the trailer completely bemusing. I could see a movie about being trapped in an elevator as an impactful psychological horror story, but with satan nibbling on you? Seriously?

I hadn't heard about it before I saw the trailer, all I knew about it was the title; Devil. When the 'From the mind of' flashed on screen, I chortled.

Probably because getting trapped in an elevator with the devil happens to every New Yorker, and they just thought it was ironic because the devil is actually a pretty funny guy.

It's probably because the guy who was going to be called "The Next Hitchcock" in 1999 is now being reduced to producing "Boo!" movies like this. The man is a standing joke now.

no, M night shyamylan (however you spell that) started off good then pissed it away with 3 shit movies. and this one looks like mediocre shit as well.

the best thing he can do is go and either find someone else to write a story for him, or just change proffession entirely, something which requires no imagination, as he has none.
