I didn't go through and read every post, but everyone knows he isn't directing that right? The Night Chronicles is a production company he started to further other directors in the horror genre. It is actually directed by the Dowdle brothers who directed The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Quarantine.
I think it looks like a great move for the Dowdle brothers as they are evolving out of their mockumentary phase (which was still great) and exploring other areas of the horror genre. You can still get some of the mockumentary vibe from the camera the security guards are watching, but otherwise it is new territory for them.
ON TOPIC: People laughed at his name because they think he is bad. I only like a few of his films, myself, but the fact is he has a very real grasp on cinema and the idea that almost everyone knows his name says something about that. All his films have a very well defined feel where you can tell it is something he directed (except maybe Air Bender as I haven't seen it).
SPECULATION: I have a feeling he agreed to work on Air Bender to acquire financial backing for his production company. It is a trend that a few other directors took part in to finance their own pet projects (James Gunn wrote the first two Scooby Doo movies to finance Slither and Michael Dougherty wrote Superman Returns and X2 to finance Trick 'R Treat), but this hasn't been confirmed and I could just be making it all up.
