I've used both and don't have any problems with any. There are many things my mac does better than the pc and vice versa. Namely, my pc was cheaper for the same parts ( because I built it myself) and plays games. The only thing PCs are really useful for.
My mac does all my work, holds all my media, and is used as a more general purpose machine. Why?
Faster and better interface.

Anyone else excited for Lion?? Windows 7 can eat its heart out.

You mean that update that is essentially a glorified piece of DLC that adds an app-store to Snow Leopard and makes it look a little nicer? No thanks, 7 is still laughing on the top of the hill.

I presently don't use either. I use Linux Ubuntu. If I had in my possession a more powerful computer, then I'd probably dual-boot with Windows 7 for PC games. Other than that, I like using Ubuntu because it means I can experiment and learn about my computer without fear of breaking an overly expensive OS. If something happens to go wrong, then the fix is as simple as reinstalling Ubuntu and being careful to maintain all of my fundamental data on a flash drive.

Mac's aren't crap they just dont do what I want them to do...and they are more expensive...and more costly to fix...and cant run all of the programs PC's can.

I need a PC for what I do, meaning I want something that I am comfortable with and that can run everything I need to run and is cheap to buy and easy to fix at home.

I don't consider Macs as crap, everything I need a computer for (gaming mostly) a Windows Machine can help. I use photoshop (barely) and adobe premiere so it could be either or on Mac or Windows machine. I do prefer gaming and most of my games (at like 90%) are Windows machine only.

Most people consider Windows machines better because of more range of freedom in terms of what you can and can't install.

Problem Windows machine users have with Mac users is that most Mac users (at least the one I met) consider Windows machine worthless with no reason. I have met people who say the moment you turn on a windows machine it becomes full of virus's. Which isn't true (also Unix based machines can have these issues as well, seeing how Mac's has some security updates also). But it's the idea that I own a Mac so I'm automatically better then you, which a lot of Windows machine hate a lot.
You pretty much nailed it. I tend to go back to if you need to fix a mac, you haven't much choice but to buy a new one. If you need to fix a pc, change a part. That fancy apple on the back or front or pretty much plastered everywhere on their machines means fewer options.

Both get viruses, but it's a Purel type of situation because if you get a virus on a mac it's likely worse than if you've gotten one on a PC. PC get viruses, but as people aren't expecting them on macs, they can be worse off.

They are the same, if anyone argues that, they are living in the early '90s when macs had slightly better displays so a designer could tell where they were pushing pixels more precisely. It is the same now from a designer's standpoint ... if they have any logic and aren't hipsters.

As soon as there are as many games in other systems Windows will die off like internet explorer did; Now days only old folks use it and that will be the future of Windows.
Also, all I see here is Windows users bashing on apple, I mean, they aren't saying that Windows is better, they are just saying that they don't like apple and/or that snow leopard is not better.

My friend says the hardware on his mac is better. I said I could find a PC with the same specs for half the price. He then said that his would last twice as long due to the hardware being better. I pointed out that as it is half price you can buy a new one halfway through the macs lifetime and then you'll be able to get even better specs.

I just don't get it.

PCs
Why?
I don't run a server therefore I have no use for Terminal - the only advantage of a Mac. [/quote]
Didn't Apple use Linux for their servers? I'm not entirely sure, but I think they did.

Anyhow, I have a Linux PC that I use for work, and a Windows PC for gaming. So PC. I like the fact that Mac doesn't consider itself a "personal computer," though. :D

Well, OP, I recommend you split the difference and do both. I'm running Leopard right now, but my iMac is also running XP using BootCamp.

I have both OSes, so I can do either games or use the internet, etc. XP is pricey at four times the price of Leopard, but that's not a problem for PC gamers, right?

I'm sure people have asked this before but lets hear what a new batch of people have to say.

I'm a Mac user. Have been all my life but now I want a change so I'm going PC. Now the big reason is to play games but besides that not much else. And since I'm going to make this switch I just want to ask:

What do you prefer and why?

And a better question:

Why do many people consider that Macs suck and PCs are superior?

Have fun.
You can install Windows on a Mac, so you don't need to "Go PC", just run both and switch as needed.

If your Mac isn't fast enough to run modern games, get a new iMac, if you're going the laptop route, it'll be just as slow and laggy with either hardware.

Because most people are idiots.

However, there is a modicum of truth.

Without going into a long-winded backstory, they are equal in terms of hardware and stability in this day and age (Windows has become more stable, OSX less so, so they're about even). This leads to the price and capability points, which regular PCs dominate. We're long since past the days where Apple had advantages due to the Adobe suite and WYSIWYG.

For £1000~, you can get a Mac that is decent. For £400-500, you can get a PC that outperforms that Mac in hardware by a long shot. So value for money is out of the window.

Then there's the compatibility - Macs cannot run many games. Windows-based PCs can run any games. No contest there.

Then there's the upgrade issue - Upgrading Macs is either impossible or restrictively expensive. Take your pick. Hardware compatibility is also an issue. Apple fanboys will claim that it's because Apple only allow the best hardware on the market, which is entirely wrong.

I use both PCs and Macs on a day-to-day basis due to my career, and have done for years. I can say, hand on my heart, that I'd rather a PC in any situation. You have more control, better value for money, and distance from the ever-growing nannying of Apple.

Point is, I built my PC at the end of last year for ~£1000, and it's less than half of the price of an equivalent Mac. The added bonus? I have dual-boot Windows 7 and OSX on it. There is genuinely no need for Macs. The only thing you're getting for the money is a brand name and (occasional) beautiful design. Not worth it given the massive restrictions.

Agreed on half of that. In current times, there is no difference for design/art work.

However, that wasn't the reason why they were used more. It was both brand loyalty (Apple had the first Adobe suite and the first WYSIWYG interface, and thus more followers for that sector), and more importantly, stability. Older Windows platforms were notoriously unstable, whereas Apple OS were less fickle, leading to less lost work.

Actually, Macs are AMAZING as computers, it's just that apple, and the whole culture surrounding them is kind of annoying. Apple because everything they sell is WAY overpriced. 2000 dollars for a macbook pro... the hell? The culture because they think that they are better than everyone, really it's the hipsters in cafes sipping their cappucinos typing a shitty script on their "GOD MACHINE" that gets to most... at least where I'm at.

This thread is perfect for me though, since you are a longtime mac user, what are some of the first things I should do with my mac, I am getting one for film school.

I use Windows for gaming and Ubuntu (w/ Gnome desktop) for work.

Under Ubuntu, the tools I use run faster than under Windows, so it makes more sense to dev under Linux. As I'm a PC gamer, Windows is my only real choice for that :p

I don't have any cause to use a Mac or their OS, so no interest in using one.
I'm running Gnome 2.x. Unity quickly lost its novelty (and not to mention revealed itself to be antithetical to productivity), and based on the screen shots I've seen, Gnome 3 unfortunately does not look much different. The side bar was my main issue. If I'm actively using more than one window, then the last thing I want to do is to have to scroll over to the side and wait each and every time I need to switch between them. Have also read that Gnome 3 and Unity cannot be friends, but this seems easily remedied by installing Fedora 15.

Macs are better computers. If they had support for games equal to PC, they'd be the superior game machines. As it stands, the limited selection and lack of specialization for gaming makes PC's the best gaming machines.

No, they're the same computers.

Why do people have this crazy belief that Apple somehow conjure magical components from beyond the stars? It's the same hardware (and often cheaper alternatives) as a PC.

Snow Leopard has had an app store for a while now....

But after messing around with it, I wouldn't pay full price for it. Since it's only $30 I am upgrading, but the requirements are kind of ridiculous (at least for Mac users). I don't know how many people will be able to run it and I'm afraid of it killing my iMac....
