In most RPGs I tend to start with a warrior type character just cause they're the most straightforward. If I like the game enough I may start over as a mage or rogue type. That being said, with games like KOTOR, where it's just the d20 system slapped on Star Wars, I liked to start as skill monkey classes like scoundrel or scout.

If I had to pick a class for myself in real life I'd likely be a mage/cleric type. My D&D buddies and I have wondered what class we'd be and most of my friends think I'd be a cleric or paladin (D&D versions, not WoW or whatnot).

I always choose the Warrior, and then pick the most "Holier than thou" specialisation. I'm a Paladin to the bone.

Almost always mage, I like the though of eliminating enemies with nothing but a comfy robe and my hands.

fighter/mage/thief

or

fighter/cleric/mage.

you never get as powerful as you would just specializing, but I always tend to balance out all my stats. I mean, it ain't just in baldur's gate - in morrowind, oblivion, and, well, shit in every single game I've been given the choice I almost always end up trying to be good at as many things as possible. I pretty much solo'd the BG series as a fighter/mage/thief.

One thing is that I'd rather not have to choose at the start what my class or skill sets are or should be, but rather like fallout or morrowind, choose some basic stats and then be allowed to develop them in any way I want, not just down one set path.

oh, and always a gnome or dwarf (or just generally short, if possible). Don't know why, just . . . well, I like to role play short people, alright?

No like complicated magic people. No like strange bow people. Like hitting smaller things with big metal things. Like armour - protects squishy parts from pointy things.

So yeah, warrior, with all the mental stereotypes of the huge tanking fellow that implies.

Although I own a bow, and not a sword. So maybe archer in real life.

warrior, the tank , sword and shield and all that jazz, magic is complicated and archery relys on other factors such as partners to keep the enemy away or some kind of spell that does the same thing to stop an enemy putting a sword in your face while your fiddling with a bow

I pick mage because, if the game is any good, they usually have the coolest looking attacks.

I usually try to be more stealthy. But in Dragon Age style games I try to be the warrior.
