You seem to forget why mainstream games became mainstream in the first place... it is because they were PRETTY DAMN GOOD.
Halo. Oh god, Halo.
Then again, name me one console game that was more
influential to the multiplayer in the previous generation... Just one.
Mmmkay. Timesplitters 2. Smash Bros Melee.
Halo 1 was the reason to justify an xbox, it was the reason for console FPS multiplayer, and it was pretty good. I may give you it wasn't perfect, maybe call it average... but it certainly wasn't bad...
not that your example of calling Smash Bros a good, influential mainstream multiplayer game was better.
I'm pretty sure you didn't specify the word mainstream in there.
My issue with your example is not in the mainstream part, but the good. Considering the thread is called "mainstream games... ", all discused games are mainstream; and I believe Smash Bros is pretty mainstream without saying... And, together with most Nintendo sequels, are some of the most derivative, unoriginal and recicled examples of sequels.
Derivative, unoriginal and recycled, when what we were talking about before was Halo? Come on. Also merely because the thread is called mainstream games, it's not supposed to be my call to tack the word 'mainstream' on to the word 'games', whenever anyone says it. Surely it isn't that much effort to type the word 'mainstream' when you want to refer to such? Anywhoodle, I wouldn't say that Smash Bros. Melee was at all mainstream relative to Halo or any other massive current generation game, and I really liked it. I thought it was a pretty big step up from Smash Bros., much more so than the step between Melee and Brawl.
To be "mainstream" is not something that can be defined relative to another example. Games are mainstream or not.
This is getting ridiculous... we both agree on the point of this thread, we just don't agree on the examples. I think Halo 1 was mainstream and good, you think Melee was mainstream and good.
The point is that there are many examples this generation of games that are mainstream and are good. Bioshock, Fallout 3, Batman: Arkahm Assylum, just to name a few...
So, the TC thinks that all mainstream games are meh... He/She is wrong. He either didn't try some good mainstream games lately and is unfairly basing his hypotesis on shitty ones; or he is like a grumpy old man, looking at games now being popular and remembering with nostalgia when gamers were few and games like MK Ultimate were good (cue: it never was).
