First off, this isn't another "mainstream music is shit" thread,
i mean, we all know that most of it is shit, but are there any good songs, any at all?

I think this is awesome, in my opinion.

Come on, they're not all bad, not in my eyes.
Post yours, and remember...

DON'T FLAME PLEASE

I actually think we've been having it quite good for the last number of years. The first half of the 2000's consisted of M&M and the like, whereas recently there's been quite a resurgence in decent music - I say sit back and enjoy it while it lasts.

Listen to this crap, it's a fairly new "song" too.

I've heard it before, looked it up after she was on the Simpsons, but I haven't heard it played over here. Could just be the station I listen to, which is great (Today FM). The play a mix of international artists, who are great, but they also try and squeeze in modern Irish ones too, I'm guessing most wouldn't have heard of.

Some of their recently played are, eg, Flo & The Machine, Damien Dempsey, Bell X1, The Script, Paolo Nutini, The Coronas, Micky Bublé, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Republic of Loose, Ryan Sheridan, Taylor Swift, Pixie Lott, Imelda May.. All modern, all listenable.

I like a lot of the new rap, actually. For me, it's you sing or you don't. You can't do both in one song. When they follow that formula, it works out.

This song is great.

So what if it hasn't been popular for like 20 years.

In my experience, people that whine about how shit the music of today is generally do two things: A) view past music and its history through rose-tinted glasses, because the context under which supposed "classic" popular music was created and consumed is no longer relevant when consuming it now and B) don't look hard enough for anything decent and are content to lament the passing of some sort of standard that has been lowered or been destroyed, but that can never seem to be defined in any concrete way.

Interestingly, most people who do so (at least online) didn't even live in the days that they miss and so longing for a time that wasn't even theirs takes on a certain laughable irony. In a few decades, the same crop will spring up, spouting idiotic lines like "what happened to the music of the 2000s, now that was great music".

EDIT: Here are a few tracks I've been hooked on lately, from some solid groups.

I could easily include dozens of others too.

Yeah, I've been thinking the same, we've had quite a bit of good music recently, including Weezer, which is amazing, Eminem with his mind blowing emotion, the reboot of top rock and metal artists in 2007 (AC/DC, Metallica, Guns and Roses) As well as Outkast, Paramore, and the Barenaked Ladies. Every generation had it's bad songs, however, and we certainly have no shortage of those. Performers (I refuse to call them Artists) such as Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and Usher who rely heavily on auto tune and do as their contract says; including acting like a drunken whore, using sex to gain popularity, and over using auto tune to a point of not even singing at all, respectively. Finishing on a positive note, I've recently discovered a new rap artists whose songs are catchy and good natured, all while being fun to listen to. This is B.o.B., with awesome songs such as Magic(feat. Rivers Cuomo)
watch?v=Cq-NShfefks&ob=av3e
and Airplanes(feat. Hayley Williams). The present and future of music, I believe, is in good hands, just as long as the slut (ke$ha) poisons her liver sometime soon.

Some of it's alright, others just flatout auto-tuned.

Not sure if it counts as mainstream

Music is highly subjective, but these songs are very mainstream in terms of sales.

I don't know. That's not horrible. Kesha's not my cup of tea, but I expected something awful, not something "meh."

........

I don't care how many people like that crap...

BUT why the fuck does she get a contract and a fucking music video!?
Seriously just by singing and having annoying rhythms in the background she got famous?

I'm the wrong person to ask for examples of mainstream music that doesn't suck - I surround myself with niche genres and obscure artists as a general rule. A certain subset of what I listen to is more broadly known, but I honestly couldn't tell you how "mainstream" it was/still is, just that people are more likely to have heard of it than the really obscure stuff I typically listen to.

Normally I'd say that singing takes a lot of work, but judging by her use of auto-tune, I don't think she can even sing.

Brothers, do you not know that the ultimate mainstream song was made decades ago? Scientifically crafted for maximum catchiness?

Personally, I like Lady Gaga songs. Sure she's crazy but her songs are alright.
Oh yeah, they're also responsible for
And I like 'Not afraid' by Eminem.

This man speaks the truth; just ask Nirvana. Emulating this song even remotely will get you a guaranteed hit.

Sorry, what are you listening to? All I hear is loads of differant singers all sound the same.

It just seems to be this R&B wave of music and all the singers have got together, wrote a bunch of songs, stuck them in a hat and picked randomly, theres nothing unique.

Iike lady gaga, although her last big hit was abysmal (probably spelt that wrongly). She is just so placid and kwirky.
