Ok. As for ending, guess what, that will not undo the damage that has already been done.

I would have to say the absolute best way to improve it in my opinion would to be do what they have been doing and become the publisher for From Software. Allow them to build the bulk of the gameplay mechanics in the vein of Demon's Souls and let Squeenix focus on the narrative until they produce something that is cohesive and actually good instead of frankensteining a bunch of Anime cliches together.

Ok, Thats not going to happen. There is a long list of things they need to do to right the flagship. Honestly I just wrote the equivalent of a miniature thesis, so Not really up for writing something that long again. However, I agree that for the most part, the OP is on the right track, but there are some slight deviations that would need to be made. (biggest of which is the focus on the FF games from the era of decline.) (Not a big fan of 12s combat system. Smacked entirely too much of trying to rip off KoTORs combat system and really didnt come off any better or even as good as the original inspiration)

EDIT: And before someone says "Bring back triple Triad from FF8" I would say, that is the beauty of open source games. The ability to play triple triad-esque games online against other people. OT: isnt the name triple triad a tad bit redundant?

My ideal Final Fantasy game isn't all that different from my ideal game in general. I mean, obviously I want deep and varied, likable characters, a unique and well-told story and varied, well-implemented gameplay. But what do a specifically want in a Final Fantasy title? Here's my list, mostly based on what I haven't liked about the most recent few I've played:
- A Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack. Not that I've disliked the newer ones at all, but there is a sound to his work that I associate with the franchise. There also hasn't been a good boss-battle theme since IX, I don't think.
- A whimsical art style that recalls elements of steampunk, fantasy and fairy tales. Art direction by Yoshitaka Amano, would be preferable.
- A story wherein all characters tie in well.
- A story that actually makes sense.
- A story that does not necessarily involve saving the world.
- Varied out-of-battle gameplay to help ease the sameness of combat sequences (A puzzle now and again wouldn't hurt).
- A tactical battle system, allowing for more dynamic combat scenarios.
- Minimum reliance on "The power of friendship" as a plot device.
- A villain with some form of motive.
- Secrets that do not involve a manual or extensive guide to even know about, let alone locate.

And no Tactics Advanced is like the reject adopted child to final fantasy.

It's fun sure, but it differs so much compared to Tactics and I refuse to accept it.

Yeah, play FFXII again, there are many quests like that wherer they mention something about a place you've been to before earlier, you go back and an entirely new area opens up. You'd either find a new Esper after searching the new area, new rare monsters, rare equipment etc.. One example is the huge crystal you can go into, that place has WAAAAAAAAAY more floors then you explore on first time there. I literally got lost on floors with enemies with 99999 health and had to turn off the system and reload lol. Many explored places have another openening that most likely will lead to a hidden Esper.

id like a setting thats a cross between 12 and 6, steampunk-fantasy. id like the combat from 12 but i would have liked a little more variety, so a quasi job system, but nt as restricting as past versions. 13 visuals are a must, and the soundtrack mixed with a little of 12's.

a better variety of weapons would also be interesting, back in 6 you could have a chainsaw for gods sake, i spent all of 12 with swords and spears

I don't think they ever throw a dart for the personality. Loner is just the default unless they can come up with something interesting, which they usually don't bother doing.

Okay, serious answer. I miss Materia. I also thought the Sphere Grid was better than the Crystarium, because it allowed for more customization and was less linear. As for the characters, bring back Auron and Zack and make Seifer playable. That's your party right there. Throw in a good story, bitching music (the Black Mages cover of the FF7 boss battle theme is still the best combat song ever) and minimize the whining. Oh, and bring back Cid from FF13, but this time make him important rather than a throwaway plot device. He seemed to have so much potential, but instead we listened to Hope whine about whatever... again.

Oh, and I really liked the weapons system from FF10. Constantly buying new weapons is pointless and grindy. Just allow us to make our weapons better. Possibly as rewards for sidequests or something. Seriously, give me a genuine reason to care about the people who want me to do their little quests other than just money or ham-fisted sentimentality.

Kidding aside, why? Seriously, why? Her voice is astonishingly similar to nails on a chalkboard, she's bland and pointless as a character, has nothing to contribute to the story (seriously, Fang was the only one between the two who was in any way relevant to anything) and she sucks in combat. I can't find a single redeeming quality in anything she does. Explain to me how you can not hate her.

FFVII - Chocobo Racing/Breeding. The chocobo breeding was a nice distraction and While Materia was a nice system, there are other combat & levelling systems I prefer and everything else in that game has since been bettered by its sequals.

FFVIII - GF Summons & Junctions and Music. VIII's music is definitely my favourite of the series and bringing back Mr Uematsu to do something similar would be brilliant. While I wasn't a fan of Junction on anything other then a powergaming level, the idea of levelling and boosting your GFs and them giving you additional bonuses is a great idea that needs to be explored again.

FFIX - Art Style and Vivi. With the continual push for games to appear more adult and mature, a more cartoony look would be a nice change of pace and the FMVs in IX shows that the charactured artstyle using modern graphics would work well. Also, everything better with Vivi!

FFX - Combat, Limit Breaks, Narrative Style & side quests. As someone who has always enjoyed the short term planning required in turn based combat, I really enjoyed X's queue system. I also enjoyed the Limit system and how you could set it to increase through factors other then just being hit. I've chosen Narrative Style from X as I think it got the best balance between a "Save the World" epic story and individual character growth. It wasn't perfect, but damn it was close. X also had the most variety in terms of side quests with the monster hunting, the monster ranch, and Al Behd language and the ultimate weapons.

FFX-2 (its an FF game Dammit!) - Job system. While its presentation was very very silly, I really liked both the implimentation and the variety of the jobs available in X-2. It meant you could shift roles at a moments notice if required and also gave me lots of lovely lovely grinding.

FFXII - Nothing. Sorry, but there's nothing in XII that I would want to carry over.

FFXIII - Character depth, Job limits and Graphic fidelity. XIII had (in my opinion) some of the best characters in any FF game. They all felt beleivable with interesting back stories and good motivations for what they were doing. Sadly the narrative wasn't as strong as in previous games so it sometimes felt a bit aimless. Combine the character depth with X's narrative style and you're onto a winner. I liked the idea in XIII that while everyone could do any role, some were severely limited in what they could do and people gaining different skills in a role at different times. Combine this with the Variety X-2 offered in its Job system and it would be perfect. Also, shiney and oh so pretty!

FF9's music & score, and writing style (I liked the sense of humour!)

One simple thing: an interesting world map. I might have been able to forgive the overall horrible artistic design, plot and voice acting of FFX (the latest non-MMO FF I played) if it had a world map that was fun to explore.

As another member of the Vanille fanbase, I thought I'd come in and defend her.

On an in game level, she's annoying because she's constantly trying to lighten the mood because she's been through it before. Her most telling point in the game is when she and Sahz are going to sleep. At first she's upbeat, telling Sazh to stay on his side of the line etc. However, when he goes to sleep, she becomes scared and lonely and moves next to Sazh for comfort. Before the start of the game she was a L'Cie and being one forced her to watch her friend destroy the world. In the game, she see the same thing happening with more people. She's being jolly to try and keep everyone else jolly and away from the fact that they will inevitebly die.

On a Meta-level. She's annoying becuase she's supposed to be over the top. Each character in XIII is a deconstruction on the traditional cliches. Sazh is introduced as a stereotypical "Black Guy", Snow does things you would normally do in a computer game and gets disasterous results, Hope gives you the usual child star and shows you how he would really act and Fang shows what happens when the amnesiac hero gets found by the wrong people/no people at all. With Vanille, she's initially supposed to be the character who's always cheerful no matter what and then looks into why.

I don't think you can have a bigger focus on the characters then XIII, for a significant portion of the game the only objective the party had was getting Hope to talk to his dad. Character interaction is all that game had.

The thing I missed most about the series was the open world map that you could explore by land, sea, or air, which we haven't had since IX. XII came close, but I want to pilot an airship damn it, not select a location on a menu. Bring that sense of exploration back (with a gradual broadening of the world, until by the end you can go anywhere you want), and that could be the start of something good.

So, I guess what I'm saying is: XII's open-world with X/XIII's combat (XIII really was just a glitzed up version of X, minus the character-swapping, which they should bring back), and exploration from I-IX. Oh, and no more "buy increasingly powerful swords" to fight enemies with. Bullshit, I shouldn't have to choose between a dozen or so swords and figure out which one I should take for the next ten minutes of fighting before it becomes obsolete and I have to get another sword. However, if they want to do the license system from XII, and have everyone be able to use whatever weapons you want (though with some characters having different affinities), that would be fine. The story and setting don't matter, just as long as the stories good (no wasting of five hours before getting to anything resembling a point, like XIII), and I can explore the world (though I would hope it's not too gaudy).
