"I'm finished" you say, as you finish your ground braking video game freak out moment (look at my old posts)

Suddenly, your boss flies in crying "I just saw E.T., and I want you to make a incredably sad moment in a game, to make someone cry." He then explodes into a rainbow of happieness and runs away.

You need to make the player cry.
How?

I would team up with Valve to make a new half-life game for them. You will be in a train, only this time playing as Alyx, and the train crashes on the bridge, Gordon hangs on the edge of the bridge. The rest of the team is on the other side of the bridge, fighting off evil, and the part of the bridge counecting you and them brakes. You look at Gordon, and grab his hand, you can't pull him up. Flash backs of the game burst up, only this time they apear through Alyx's eyes. The flash back goes to Gordon, which show his childhood. You zoom in on Gordon's face, and a sighn pops up on screen saying let go. He falls to his death with a tear as you let go.

Any fan boy would cry.

RROD, and a kick in the old chap would do it for me.

Failing that, maybe making the next Zelda game entirely from the perspective of Navi?

I'm going more for mean crying here, really..

I would freeze my body until technology would allow me to make a game where the character hops out of the player's TV and beats the living shit out of them until they cried.

I'm going to go with the good old "kill off likable best friend / romantic interest". It would be more than half way through the game of course, so you can establish the connections and grow to like the character. It would happen from the first person perspective, and will be done with a chainsword-variant (pointy tip and chainsaw bits on both sides in place of cutting edges). He/she will get stabbed through while you facing them, they'll look at the sword slowly, than at you, lean over toward you with a "Oh god... Help me... I dont want to die! PLEASE!!!" look on their face and a tickle of blood slowly descending down their chin. Than the chainsword will activate and go up while at the same time pulling the body away and changing the expression to the "OH GOD!!!! NOOOOOOO!!! THE PAIN!!!!!", and spraying you with blood as it cuts up through their body.
That's...spooky.

Play Amazing grace on the bag pipes and anyone who saw Wrath of Khan will tear up after thinking of Spock. A charicter doesn't even need to be dead just play the song and some nerd will be sobbing.

I cry all the time when I die in Dragon Age and must start 1 hour behind the whole gameplay just because some enemy had gay abilities I could not expect in advance.

One time is enough to break you into pieces.

DAH! WTF?!

Yup, that'll definitely get the tears flowing and the nightmares all fueled up and ready to go. It would certainly do it for me.

Cry? No. Sad? Definitely.

That would work as well. This also gets an early nomination for best post of the year.

Animals are a sure way to tap into a humans emotions. Have a dog companion, like in Fable 2, and at a crucial scene, see and hear the dog being tortured and torn apart in a way more graphic than the game had presented up until that point.

Tell them that Valve has lost interest in making Episode 3 for Half-Life and instead will be focusing on Left 4 Dead 3 and Team Fortress 3 and Portal 2 for the next 10 years.

Games aren't well acted, animated or well written enough (for the most part) to make me cry.

The only game that has made me cry is the final scene of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway where Baker visits Red in the hospital. The line "You're not gonna walk again. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" coupled with the best animation and voice acting I've ever seen in a game made me start weeping.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1luGAXBOqnc&feature=related here is the link for those who have not experienced the saddest cutscene in gaming history (the scene I'm referencing starts at around 2 minutes in).

Sadly, I'm starting to think that this is true. Left 3 Dead and Portal 2 seem pretty awesome though...

OT: what always worked for me (making me tear up) was having the nicest, sweetest, cutest, most lovable character in the game die. I saw an animatied movie once that did this, (when I was ike 9 mind you) the move killed off the dog-like "pet-character" who wouldn't hurt a fly. I cried my eyes out. v_v,
