And as for the drugs released without any real side-effects:
Thalidomide, launched by on 1st October 1957, was found to act as an effective tranquiliser and painkiller and was proclaimed a "wonder drug" for insomnia, coughs, colds and headaches. It was also found to be an effective antiemetic which had an inhibitory effect on morning sickness, and so thousands of pregnant women took the drug to relieve their symptoms.
Problem was that the drug also jumped through the placental barrier and thousands suffered. Now, can the Doctors say, with 100% certainty that this sort of thing won't happen again?
Because until then, it's a desperation drug.

I don't claim to know much about biology, or even sex education - given my schooling. I do claim that there's a huge backlog of relevant info on why other methods are more reliable at the moment.

We can hope for an effective male pill, but I don't think it's coming in our lifetime. And if it tastes of curry/lager, so much the better. ;)
About Thalidomide. The problem caused by that drug was due to what's known as a structural isomer. What that means is while two molecules have the same number of atoms of whatever elements are in them, they are structured differently. In Thalidomide, the damaging one was the mirror image of the helpful one. There's really no easy way to differentiate between isomers like that. They've got the same density, melting point, polarity, etc.

I would use this, but only after I've had all the kids I want. This is just incase there are any fertility side effects, and its better then getting your tubes tied. Untill then I'll be keeping the condom companies in business.

Cheers Labyrinth for info.

To switch sides for a moment: If there was a drug released that contained, somehow, only the helpful isomer of thalidomide, would pregnant women choose to take it?

And this is well before we go into the issue of price, because I can see this drug being a huge money-spinner.

There has to be some sort of disadvantage to it. You don't just 'deactivate' part of your body without any side-effects.
Really? The appendix can be removed as well as the Gallbladder. They do squat.
But they don't do anything in the first place. Sperm is actually quite useful.

[sub]Now you'll just find an example of something which can be removed but is useful otherwise, won't you. Wait, isn't the Gall Bladder useful in some way anyway?[/sub]
A kidney and nope. Oh, and it's only useful if you want demonspawn, AKA Kids.
You're a loyal member of PRIATE then?

And kidney removal has side effects! Namely, pseudo-diabetes.

I won't be touching these pills. I have too much fun putting on mint connies and thinking I'm the green goblin or a chocolate one and thinking I'm black.

More importantly, I'd be concerned for irreversible damage and wouldn't want to run the risk of destroying the chance of being a father.

It sounds too good to be true and usually in that case it is.

This doesn't deal with the prevalence of casual sex, and in fact practically encourages it.
(Sex with no consequences? (except STDs) What are you going to say?)

Men don't need dead sperm, they need very alive sperm and to fully accept the consequences of their shitty mistakes.
I don't understand. If someone takes the pill, they are being responsible (at least for the 'having children' part of the equation)-why are you telling them to 'accept the consequences of their shitty mistakes' then?
Okay, I didn't really explain it that well.
A pill that takes away the consequences, so you can go sleeping around all you want, none of them will get pregnant.
So if over time the body builds up a resistance to the pill and the sperm don't die, all of a sudden all the casual sex comes back to haunt you.
Or if you forgot your tri-monthly pill.

We don't need anything else encouraging this sort of behaviour, we need people to wear condoms or deal with the consequences of not doing so.

(Just as an aside, I bet the feminists will find some way of objecting to this. I'm not sure how yet but I'm sure they can manage it)
You are assuming that everyone who takes the pill will turn into some sex frenzied socioth sticking their cock in every vagina that appears.

What about folk like me who are in a relationship of over 5 years but aren't ready for children. We prefer having sex without connies, so having a pill that won't mess up a womens hormones or period if she forgets the pill will make things easier and better for us.

Please don't warn me STD's, it will be the best indicator that my partner has cheated on me :)

Taking the pill on its own merits (i.e. disregarding STD's) I think it is a wonderful idea as it does give some equality to guys, who can make their choice on pro-creation and have a way to back it up. No crazy girlfriends stealing your semen, no child-related consequences of a one night stand (Always use condom here!) and you son't have to take a foul tasting pill EVERYDAY.

I don't like it when my guy uses condoms because it breaks the mood some and it is chafey-as sometimes, so I got the implant and take the pill. Just think of the amount I'm messing with my system. So if he could take this once every 3 months, I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

Good idea I fail to see how anyone can think additional methods of contraception will add to the number of unwanted pregnancys

The female pill never caused the market for condoms to drop because the condom is the only effective deterent to STD's and provides another method of contraception

everyones a winner

Wouldn't use it. I'm also against the female variant of it. Just put on that raincoat (don't know if it is only a Dutch metaphore) and go for it. These chemical things and what not that aren't really necessary in the body? I am not fond of them.
well, i won't "put on the raincoat"... why?
because there is absolutely NO SENSATION.

yeah, i dont feel a thing with a condom on.

I guess we'll find out in three (or so) years? Though I'm skeptical, what with the lack of side effects so far... not to mention the need to only take it once every three months.

Could be a good idea, but I would wait for several years of it being on the market to make sure it doesn't permanently affect fertility...

It's as creepy as the female pill! What if you can't have babies when you want to?

Although... I guess no condoms are needed anymore... It might be a good thing.

I completely love this idea. Way better than having to make sure you always have sufficient amounts of condoms around or trusting that your girlfriend won't forget her own pill. Taking one of these things and being free from the fear of having to pay child support for 18+ bloody years if things go wrong, for three whole months? Dude, sign me up!

It's advertised to be side effect-less and stuff like that.
Noooooo fucking way I'm taking it. I never trust something that seems the be working perfectly.
