I look back down at Sigma.
"Okay, all of us are in this thing called the 'Respawn Matrix'. Most of your files got corrupted, so we reloaded one that wasn't. Clearly, that was made before you entered the Mall, so that's why you don't remember us or the Mall or anything. Think of it like loading a save in a video game. Anyway, let's go inside."

 

[Sigma Castell]

"My name is Sigma. I come from Earth, and I worked at a company called Castellcorp. I remember something happened. But I dont know what. I think...I think I died. And there was someone everyone called scrubs. And maintenance tunnels and a market and the seamstress guild."

 

[Paddy the Second]

"Ok. Let's get you a drink or something. Where's the nearest thing that's not on fire?"

I blink as new information pushes its way to the front of my brain.
"I know how to make an Absinthe Manhattan."

 

[Paddy the Second]

"You see the ingredients for a cocktail in this burning wreckage son? Because I don't."

"Scrubs... I think I remember her, but in the same way that I remember things about Salt's quest. Which is to say, probably due to Seer bullshit or something. As for maintenance tunnels and a market, that was when you ended up in New Moscow earlier this year. The Seamstress Guild came after that."
I think for a few seconds.
"Maybe the file is more recent than we think, it's just some of the memories are corrupted. And maybe the rest of the ship, that we keep forgetting about, is fine."

 

[Paddy the Second]

"Well if any of the files are corrupted it doesn't bode well for the rest of them, retrospective corruption you know? Maybe we should clear up this file."

"Yeah. It said file 3 wasn't corrupted, but it the memories from file 2 were lost... Anyway, you go see if the kitchen is on fire and get Sigma some dry clothes and alcohol, I'll head down to the Matrix and check out the files."

 

[Paddy the Second]

A batch of tulpas fans out through the mall and quickly return, they dump the clothes on Sigma's head before setting up a table and chairs with various bottles and foodstuffs.

I head into a subbasement lift and start mashing the '9' button.

Somewhere far away, there is a whirr of something that sounds like a kitchen appliance. I hold out a bright green cocktail to Paddy.
"Here you go."
In the corner of my eye, I see the bright red of my combat bionic tooltip.

I spit out my drink.

The lift slowly begins its descent, and I have a thought. I press the intercom button, and my voice comes out across the Mall.
"Hey, Paddy. If Sigma's save was made post-Mall, he'd have all his weapons and blenders and shit. So, have him check to see what he's got."

"Oh yeah! You should have various weapons you can use to kill me! Try 'em out!"

I lean in behind Sigma.
