Always amazes me how people think just because they are behind a computer screen they can get away with something they would never dare to do in real life.

You can't harass and distress people, you can't view images of minors having sex, you can't take money or property that doesn't belong to you. Oh, but your doing it on the internet? Guess what? Still a crime. Prepare to serve the time.

Stick your free speech argument up your arse as well. I'll just go and tell the police you tried to kill me last Thursday. Free speech right? I'm only using words, expressing myself, right? Words, like actions, have consequences. Deal with it.

Sometimes the consequences are that a 12 year old commits suicide over the 'free speech' directed at her by these weirdos, sometimes the consequences are that the 'troll' goes to prison. Personally, I prefer the latter consequence. I know in Duffy's case the people he was targeting were dead anyway, but it still affected the family of the deceased.

p.s. In before consequences will never be the same.

I say they were perfectly justified to throw him in jail for this. People think for some reason freedom of speech is some holy thing that should be upheld in any and all cases. I think in only the most extreme cases, like this one. You should be held accountable for what you say.
In that case, banks should be accountable for what they do and we both KNOW thats not gonna happen

Countless people write slanderous things on memorial pages to try and cause distress, this is the internet.

I wonder why this guy is being singled out.
Facebook knows who you are.

In fact, if corporations knew who every forum user was, you can bet your ass there'd be far more of these. Libel, et cetera, really tend to piss people off; when it's their dead kid, they want blood.

It's just being referred to widely as 'trolling' because it took place on the internet. Over the phone, the written word, or verbally this is called 'harassment', which is illegal.

If only every troll was arrested, then the internet would be a lot nicer place. Weird that you can get arrested for that but glad. Guy was kind of a dick for that and needs more than a slap on the wrist as they say.

I find it odd that one guy bashes a dead person on the internet, and they get arrested, but if a group of people show up at a stranger's funeral to declare that god hates the person who died, it's protected as 'free speech'.

wouldn't happen in the united states. Free speech in the constitution fully protected and all.

I think I've got it now.

The problem isn't psychologically torturing the bereaved, it's the people who think we should be above that sort of behavior. And the reason WHY is media sensationalism. About terrorists. Is that...is that right?
I guess I forgot to mention that those people are also hypocrites. But it doesn't matter. You keep twisting my words anyway to suit your point of view. I'm not even gonna bother any more.

"We're all offended, all the time, and we don't have a fucking right not to be offended." - Penn Jillette

I'm offended by every church I see in town. There's a billboard next to a nearby grocery store that says global warming is actually a warning by god of the apocalypse. That offends me. But to shut it down and arrest the guy who did it is morally wrong.

Here's an idea. All these memorial sites, if someone is posting offensive messages on there, block them and erase what they wrote. That's not hard, and it's your site.

Harassment laws are just and fair. Being harassed and maliciously targeted over 2 solid years about the death of your daughter is not only harassment, its just freaking evil. That said he was only tried for harassment and malicious communications. But i think thats fine. Since when did this become ok? When did harassment become ok?! Over such a long period of time? When did slander become ok? People seem to dislike these laws until they protect them.

Harassment. Say it with me people. Harassment. Its against the law. If someone harassed you im sure you would turn to authorities after TWO GODDAM YEARS. Its a good law and everyone should love it.

Wtf? seriously he has been arrested for being a dick? I actually think the Natasha wasn't bullied, she was just a whore pretty funny, I lol'd.... a lot, should I go to jail as well?

Bottom line is, writing things does not harm anyone. Yes it probably made the family feel like shit and the guy is a huge ****, that is why he doesn't have any friends. Society has another way of punishing him. Pussies.
Sweet. Two years of threatening letters and emails ahoy! Thats perfectly fine right? Jesus people has NO ONE heard of harassment? Its totally illegal. Rightly so. I cant annoy you over and over and over again for two years. Especially about dead relatives. Its why we can get restraining orders on people who wont leave us alone. And thats a fair system

Its incredible how many retards on here think free speech gives this man the right to insult the memory of the deceased and harass their families.

I actually kind of wish more trolls could be arrested for trolling. If those fucking snot-nosed brats (not saying all kids are trolls or the guy was a kid, but you know what I'm sayin') who type "ur fuckin dumb" and stuff like that knew they could go to jail for trolling, I bet you would see a lot less of it.

The world would be a better place.

I suppose this falls in the same 'free speech' category as approaching a black man in the street and yelling the N-word in their face over and over. It's just real life trolling right fellas?

YAY! I hate trolls!
I think it's pretty awesome too that it's possible to get 6 months in prison just for being an asshole online.

Because this guy breached the terms of both the Malicious Communications Act and the Computer Misuse Act. Though on top of that he was just being a bigger **** than the others.

I like free speech and all, but defending this is along the lines of "I have the right to own a gun, and guns shoot things, so who can blame me when I shoot someone?"

I am both pro free speech and pro guns in a not crazy way, but grotesque abuse of any right should come with some sort of punishment. Let him say all his hate full crap, then make him regret trying to trash peoples lives for sport.
THANK YOU. So often the people who get punished are the people who are being responsible and behaving in reasonable and intelligent ways. Then some screwball comes along, is irresponsible, and ruins a legitimate thing for everyone else. Take California's SB798 or office uniforms (those are the only two I could come up with off the top of my head.)

Buddy, you're the one who keeps going off with bizarre non-sequiturs about media sensationalism and terrorists. I'm sorry if it comes across like I'm "twisting your words", because the real problem is I have absolutely no idea what you're trying to say.
