The zookeepers woke up to a grim scene today at Copenhagen Zoo, Denmark. A 21 year old man was found to have broken into the tiger enclosure, home to 3 Siberian Tigers where he was promptly attacked and killed.

It is unclear what the man was attempting to do by gaining access to the enclosure but Police have apparently not ruled out suicide as a motive.

A man was killed by tigers at Copenhagen Zoo today after he scaled a fence and crossed a moat to gain access to the predators' enclosure. The victim, who was 21, was savaged by three tigers after he broke into the zoo in the Danish capital in the early hours. He was found dead surrounded by the Siberian tigers when staff arrived for work.

It is unclear why the man, who has not yet been identified, entered the enclosure but police have not ruled out suicide as a possible motive. Superintendent Lars Borg revealed that a post-mortem examination has shown the man was bitten on the thigh, chest, face and throat.

He said: 'We received an emergency call at about 7.30am that a person had been found lying in the tiger pen and that three tigers were surrounding that person. 'The tigers attacked him and killed him. It is likely that a bite to the throat was the primary reason for his death.

'He has been in the water and the animals must have seen that and attacked him.'
Police said the victim was not Danish but that he held a Denmark resident's permit. His nationality is unknown.

Detectives are now trawling through CCTV footage to try to exactly establish how the man accessed the enclosure. Steffen Straede, the zoo's chief executive, said psychologists have been called to talk to staff who found the body. He added that this is the first incident of its kind in the zoo's 152-year history and that he has no plans to review security. He said: 'If a person really wants to get in there, we cannot prevent it from happening.'

As someone who has worked as a zookeeper, this obviously hits quite close to home. I can't imagine how the keepers must feel. It is quite possible the tigers will have to be put down as a result. You really don't want these huge powerful cats developing a taste for human and more importantly you don't want the animals in your care viewing you as a potential threat.

It's a real shame but I'm not massively surprised at the result. Tigers just have pure killing instincts. I spoke to the head of the carnivore section at the zoo I used to work at earlier and he said he wasn't surprised either but he also interestingly thought if it had been a lion pride they might not have killed him.

Over to you guys...

EDIT: Having performed some Google fu I have identified another possible motive...
Perhaps the man wanted to prove his mighty martial arts prowess against a deadline opponent?

Well that sucks. Hopefully they don't have to put the tigers down because of that guy's poor decision. I can only imagine what was going through the staffs' minds when they found him.

What the hell did he think was going to happen? I bet it was suicide because nobody would rationally climb into a tiger enclosure. You'd have to be suicidal or drunk off your ass.

And if the tigers have to be put down then that really sucks :/

Eh, some people are just thick. Same thing has happened more than once over here with crocodiles.

In those cases, though, I think it's because the crocodiles spend most of their time sitting round doing nothing, they don't look as scary, so people go poke them with sticks to get them to go something. Which, um...goes horribly right.

But yeah, quite possibly they'll have to be put down :(

Suicide by tiger? Best. Suicide. Ever.

Just think how cool his tombstone could be! "Name Namington, mauled by tigers. Made them pay for it though." I mean, you gotta embellish it a little. Otherwise it'd just be "Dumb Fuckington, thought he could fight three tigers. Proven wrong."

But you know who woulda walked out of that cage with nice new tiger-stripe jacket? Vladimir Putin.

Suicide is definitely a possibility. Some people explicitly state that they want to be killed in certain ways, such as that German guy who wanted to be killed and eaten and actually went over to someone's house or another woman who committed suicide by inviting someone over to her house to cut open her chest and pull out her heart.

Well that's awful for the staff to find. I really hope that they don't put the tigers down because of this man's stupid decision. I don't see why they would put the tigers down though. It is made clear to people that the animals are dangerous to them, it's made clear that you shouldn't dive into the pens. The tigers should not be blamed for something that is really not their faults.

How to commit suicide... like a boss.

...

Although you'd think that there would be less unpleasant ways of going about it. Little known fact: Tigers (and basically all other cats) kill by asphyxiation. Getting choked to death by a tiger's toothy jaws clamping over your throat strikes me as a pretty nasty way to go.

This. So. Much.

If I lost my will to live, that's definitely the way I'd go. (Though, I make sure I left a note or something, so they wouldn't put down those poor tigers.)

That picture made me leap out of my skin. I'm supposed to go to bed soon, dangit!

OT: Assuming it was suicide, what a wasteful, idiotic way to kill yourself.

If it wasn't, then, well,

Ah, a former zookeeper? Sweet. I'm no keeper, but I'm a veterinary technician and I know people who worked at the Toronto Zoo's health unit.

The tiger might be put down? That's interesting, because there have been cases here (years ago) where people have broken into or reached into the wolf exhibit at the Toronto Zoo and got attacked. I don't recall any of the wolves being put down, though then again wolves aren't among the largest of the land carnivores and have a natural fear of people. It was years ago, so I can't remember what happened.

African Lion Safari (a place where you can drive around enclosures in your car or a bus) years ago also had a case where a lady stepped out of her car to get an up-close view of the tiger. Can't recall if the tiger was put down or not either, and that place has only your car between you and a tiger.

Either way, if this isn't a suicide and it was some moron that thought it would be fun to skip through a tiger enclosure, this is mind-boggling. People think these animals are tame because they tolerate captivity. Even though they are used to people (...for the most part), that doesn't mean they'll take any crap from anyone invading their home and personal space.

EDIT: Also boggles the mind that we need to even think of ways to keep the average idiot from entering enclosures. The unpredictable, giant carnivores that can bring down small elephants would need to be protected from the public, not the other way around? Hmm.

Saw a news story some years back about this guy who thought he'd get into a lion pen and preach at the lions.

I think he was rescued, since he did it in broad daylight while the zoo was open. Seems like something like this happens once every few years.

People seem to forget that wild animals are WILD. They still have the instincts of their ancestors who grew up in the wild and they won't be forgetting them any time soon. Why people are surprised when an exotic, normally wild animal acts violently. We don't know all of their triggers. People who own monkeys learn this to their misfortune. Circuses wonder why sometimes their trained performers sometimes go crazy and start smashing spectators. Its because there is something triggering this reaction and we don't know all of them. Hell it could be any number of factors. As for tigers, those things are natural born killers. If you've ever read about the bengal tigers that attack villages and such you'd know they're extremely dangerous. If the guy above committed suicide by tiger, kudos to him for choosing a way out most of us wouldn't. Personally, before I'm in diapers I'd like to go out fighting a grizzly.

Reminds me of a quote from the late great Bill Hicks:

"Ya moron, quit ruining it for everybody. He?s a moron, he?s dead ? good, we lost a moron, fuckin? celebrate. Wow, I just felt the world get lighter. We lost a moron! I don?t mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious?but I am, so that?s the way it comes out. Professional help is being sought."
