Oh no, what will the WBC say to this, they are taking away god's punishment!

And why did I not hear of this before? I mean shouldn't things like this be in the news or something?

I hadn't heard of this before but something I once heard was rather interesting.
In some contries where AIDS is really preverlent victims of rape and other things that can cause people to contract AIDS are treated imidiately with loads of Anti-AIDS drugs.
Because these is so little of the HIV virus in the system the Anti-AIDS drugs kills the virus and effectively stopping things before they can start!
Now, I only head this as word of mouth (although it was from a Doctors without Boarders Doctor) but that was the general swing of it and it sounded really amazing. But don't quote me on it, double check for yourself first that I've got the facts right!

It actually was, that's the sad thing. The day after this whole thing was announced it hit the news reals. But, American media at work here, it only got about a 30 second spot, the main story of the day being some Ex-Porn Star running for govenor or something along those lines.

Since my mother died of cancer a few years ago, I've entertained this same idea. =D
If all goes well, I think we're making steps in the right direction.
Sorry for your loss dude
Lol, it's fine. I've obviously been able to cope with it, I just hope this kind of research leads to something that keeps other people from going through the same thing. ^.^

"If we can replace normal immune cells with HIV-resistant ones"
a flaw? Viruses especially the HIVirus (it's very sloppy) has a very annoying habit of constantly mutating, so really this is no "cure" but more of a treatment.

Until someone can confirm that this "cure" is flawless as in it effects very type of strain out there but regardless people don't care about donating bio-matter due to the selfish pigs people are.

Cancer ain't a disease, it's a defect. When we can 'cure' cancer we'll probably be at a point where we can 'cure' old age, since both would require changing how our cells work fundamentally.

On topic: Not heard about this. Damn impressive stuff although it just sounds like they're applying stuff thats already being done to treat AIDS rather than concocting something new. One life's been made better by it tho and that's always a bonus.

A slightly crueler tangent however; imagine the population explosion in AIDS heavy areas (I.e. Africa) if suddenly everyone WAS cured of AIDS. That would probably have pretty severe repercussions.

That sounds nice, but the article is from 2008. If there were much merit to this, I'm sure we would have heard more about it.

Whilst it's exciting news ... by the sounds of it this product would be best used as a vaccine against future infection rather than a cure for current AIDS sufferers.

A future vaccine that over the course of years helps your body create a strong resistance to HIV. I mean the Bone marrow thing makes sense as an instant cure, but at the sametime there isn't exactly an ethical (or logistical for that fact) way you could milk HIV resistant people (atleast 1 for each bloodtype) of their bone marrow so you can start injecting everybody (well .. everybdy who has AIDS) with it.

Cancer is a much harder target. And there's also ethical implications.

While Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome attacks the cells of the body, cancer becomes part of the cells of the body: Once you can cure cancer, you can also cure things like aging, infertility, eyesight, skin-colour...

That's a really treacherous road to go down, even if the benefits are worth it.

It's really not that big of a deal when seen from a larger scale. Bone marrow transplants are very risky. My uncle had leukemia and died shortly after his bone marrow transplant. Not to mention that they are crazy complicated and expensive, so most of the people who need it (poor people in Africa) have no chance of ever receiving it. The current system of fighting off the growth of the virus with anti viral medications (as expensive and nauseating as that can be) is far more practical. Maybe why news outlets in America haven't really picked up on it. Headline should read "Man Probably Cured of AIDS." The virus may still be in his body and if everyone reported it as fact, they'd look like assholes when they were proven wrong.

60 Minutes covered this story about a possible cancer cure awhile back and it was heart wrenching.
