Cancer is a much harder target. And there's also ethical implications.

While Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome attacks the cells of the body, cancer becomes part of the cells of the body: Once you can cure cancer, you can also cure things like aging, infertility, eyesight, skin-colour...

That's a really treacherous road to go down, even if the benefits are worth it.
Tiny robot spiders. Kill cancer cells with lasers. I heard it somewhere. Too sleepy to look it up.

Wait, what's wrong with fixing eyesight and infertility? Also you can already change skin color.

Oh, I'm not saying it's not a target that we should be striving for, but think of what affect this news will have.

There's a Cure for AIDS, so...who gets it? who gets it first? Are condoms etc. unnecessary? Does your insurance risk change?

And woe betide the researchers if it's found out to be false...

Nope never heard of this before.

And I'd say this is a massive step... if stem cells are allowed to be more widely researched and used then this could become a widespread cure.
it's an ethic war above all else.
won't happen fast.
well as long as we research stem cells that have uses.

Oh no, what will the WBC say to this, they are taking away god's punishment!

And why did I not hear of this before? I mean shouldn't things like this be in the news or something?
It actually was, that's the sad thing. The day after this whole thing was announced it hit the news reals. But, American media at work here, it only got about a 30 second spot, the main story of the day being some Ex-Porn Star running for govenor or something along those lines.
Woah, an ex-pornstar? Fox news must have been all over it!

I am surprised though, I'm not American and my country is supposed to still have actual news...

Well, you've just put the entire glasses/contact lenses/laser eye surgery out of business - raised insurance premiums - with the first.

The second allows a massive increase in mouths to feed, who live longer. Oh, and if we're curing cells, how about a female spermatoza or a male ovum?

And skin colour alteration? While that may help vitiligo, how does it affect someone whose body requires a certain amount of sunshine?

AIDS main "strength" is that it attacks the body at its weakest point, its own defences. Now if you muck around with them...not only are you playing God, but you're playing Satan as well.

Great! HIV and AIDS have a real possibility of being cured...if it all works out.
Now all they have to do is say, "we have found a way to cure cancer."

I like South Park's cure for aids better. LARGE DOSES OF CONCENTRATED CASH!

But seriously, it's good to know that we're going in the right direction when it comes to medicine.

Morality is such a huge setback!

Why don't people just adopt common sense, intelligence and the respect for other human life.
Not your own ass.
Because I doubt these people that are against STEM cell research that they would deny a dying human beign of a cure if it existed.

This sounds like a pretty solid step forward, and I'm all for them using all stem cells forever, they're not babies. When it can annoy me in a supermarket with it's wailing, it's a baby. Until then it's a potential cure for disease as far as I'm concerned.

I full on 100% cure for AIDS, wouldn't that be great tho?

You can guarantee it'll be attributed to 'God's will' however by the backpedalling empty hearted fucks who wish aids on anyone gay tho. Note if you're a Christian who doesn't hate people for stupid reasons, then I'm more than happy for you to see this as god's will, just keep on being a good christian and helping people, we need more of you guys! We only seem to hear about the bad minority.

*hope I haven't derailed things*

More power to science tho, morality is far too flimsy a concept to get in the way of saving lives, so we get too many people living too long, simple answer, Soylent Green.

EDIT: Actually, now that I've watched that video, this whole thing seems rather pointless if it has such a high mortality rate.
Doesn't AIDS have a 100% mortality rate?

Not at all. In fact I'd say that the impact something like this might have with the religious community (and vise-versa) is as much a part of this discussion as anything else. It goes without saying that they're constantly in a tug-of-war on issue of medicine and research.

It's a long way off of being a reliable cure seeing that bone marrow transplants have a high rejection rate as it is.
But bloody awesome for that patient in Berlin.

Don't care, don't know anyone who has it, and I would only care if they were infected purpousfully, otherwise, your fault.

Uhm you guys do realise a bone marrow transplant is one of the most painful operations that can be performed on a patient ...
OT: this does sound like a useful advance for science if they can synthasise the HIV immuse genes and if they can find a much more enjoyable way of delievering it

Hooray for science! :D

I can't believe I haven't heard about this before.

I really hope that this is a serious cure, and not just something that made him an immune carrier.
