Yeah, I dont see any proof that having a helmet on would have saved his life.
Well, it's a ten-sentence article. They're not exactly presenting data for public inspection. And the idea that a helmet could save a person from a head injury is fairly believable, so I'm willing to take the trooper's word for it. He probably saw more of it than I did.

He's a fucking idiot. I'm sorry but, if you ride a motorcycle, or any other 2-4 wheeled vehicle, and are not wearing a helmet and you fall, I don't feel sorry for you because I believe you are a total imbecile.
I second that.

Hahaha; you wear a helmet while driving a car. How often do you fall out of your car to warrant that?

So... the group ABATE does promote voluntary helmet use, but opposes enforcement by law? Is there some kind of stigma attached to wearing one because you *have* to, as opposed to doing it because you freely choose to not be an idiot?
Would they be seeking to improve the image of bikers from the usual clichéd danger-baiting moron to conscientious safe, responsible folk who freely choose to enforce safety upon themselves?

If so, well done guys. This protest really backfired. Motorcyclists as a whole don't need this kind of bad press.

This, this and this. It's sad, a little, sure. However, I sense a Darwin award has been assigned to this guy. If you're protesting helmet-mandatoriness, drive carefully or WALK. This is like that guy from Jackass who died whilst drunk driving. I'm not going to say "DESERVED IT", but what, am I supposed to care? They both died doing stupid shit.

To everyone who has stated that seatbelts/helmets should be an individuals desicion I say nay. Firstly most western nations have socialised healthcare and the US is heading that way as well so you are socially obligated to decrease the cost of potential injuries to yourself. Secondly no seatbelt + high speed collision usually = human sized glass coated ballistic projectile. The idea that someone else couldn't be hurt by a passenger that has been ejected at high speeds from their vehicle is seriously erroneous.

(I work in a hospital in the UK and hve experience in the hospital's mortuary as well)

Yeah yeah I know, I meant to restate it, someone else already got me on that. What I meant to say was an OPEN vehicle, like a motorcyle or an ATV. Im changing it right now.
A convertible?

Oh and damn, I wasn't first in pointing that out. Smart-assery, away! Woooosssh

I support his cause, but you don't need to smoke cannabis to protest against its prohibition. His action was stupid regardless of surrounding laws. At least with a helmet only the person making the stupid choice pays for it.

He's an idiot, no doubt, but that's really not the kind of thing we should be making laws about. If someone wants to kill themselves, let them do so without spending money (we don't have) trying to stop them.
I hate to say it but I was thinking the same thing just now.

Ah yes, "irony". We have dismissed that claim.

Riding any vehicle without proper protection is stupid. Just recently here, a singer and 3 other people were in a car crash, only one was wearing a seatbelt. One of the other died right away, the singer dies in the hospital a few days later and another one also went to the hospital with serious injuries. Oh, and they were in a borrowed car with no insurance. The result? A horde of fans piling up around the hospital, leaving messages at the entrance, singing and saying "it was a great injustice".

NO IT WAS NOT A GREAT INJUSTICE! He was breaking TWO laws at once and one of those laws could have saved his life. I'm not happy the guy died, but his attitude was just idiotic and in this case it's exactly the same.

And no, the people who are in danger aren't only the ones who don't use protection. If you get thrown against the front seat, you can injure the person in front of you. What about if you have a family that depends on you, uh? What about the people who have to spend time scraping you off the pavement, doing an autopsy, etc, etc, because you don't want to make your head hold a little wight? And even if you don't hurt anyone else, I am of the opinion that those who ignore laws meant first to protect them should be treated like suicidals and given no second thought.

He was stupid; purposefully riding without a helmet was pretty dumb. But I actually agree with him. The problem with both the helmet and seat belt laws is that the only person at risk is the one not wearing one of the aforementioned equipment. American government is intended to allow freedom, essentially meaning that you can do whatever idiotic thing you want as long as it's not going to hurt someone else, which is why things like murder and theft are illegal but licking a spark plug is not. Laws are not supposed to keep us safe from ourselves, they're supposed to keep us safe from others and others safe from us.

Issue being, sometimes we forget to put on a seatbelt. Or perhaps we lost our helmet. And we end up needing to pay a ticket because we had the audacity to put ourselves, and no one else, at risk, probably just because of forgetfulness or something. I don't see that as in line with the constitution or generally okay on principle for a country that was formed specifically with freedom in mind.
I have nothing more to add to this discussion. Seriously, I got ninja'd, so hard. But yeah, while I feel no sympathy for the idiot, but I do support his cause...

Why shouldn't helmets be mandatory? In fact the entire set of helmet, crashabsorbing jacket, pant, boots and gloves should be mandatory. The cardriver dosen't need this because it's mandatory that he/she wears seatbelt and that the car is par with regulations. The bikers have only what they wear.
So my thoughts is that the entire protest is moronic.

I guess its sad that an idiot was too damn silly that he ended up dying...buts its still sad.

I guess not everyone is as smart as me! Supremacy comes in many forms...

But seriously the irony kinda hurts.
