What I get from that is that you say that if a person forgets to wear a seatbelt or a helmet and they are in an accident, they only hurt themselves.
I don't completely agree. Yes, they only increase the chances of physically harming themselves and nobody else if they ignore safety equipment. But imagine what the other person in that accident has to go through when they find out they just killed someone who could have lived in other circumstances? I know a lot of people who would require mental help after such an incident.

I suppose this comes down to the US American mindset. Freedom above all else, even with live-saving inventions like seatbelts. It's mandatory and you will be fined in Europe if you don't wear a seatbelt or a helmet and while some people complain, it's not the case that we have protesters against a law that essentially forbids you from comitting suicide through stupidity.

Apparently, I will be the single dissenting voice.

I'm a biker, been one for about 15 years. I generally wear a helmet, because it protects my vision from impacts.

However, most of why many of us dispute the law is that A) 'Helmets Save Lives' is only partially true and B) it should be our decision.

On A): there is indeed evidence that helmets do save lives. There is also the fact that the average Helmet does absolutely nothing to stop Spinal Injuries or mass trauma to the rest of the body. I actually know of a rider who because he was wearing a helmet had his neck snapped and paralyzed him from the neck down- because the whiplash from the weight of the helmet was greater than his head alone.

His comment: "Guess being a helpless invalid is better than death, right?"

Some of us don't necessarily agree.

B): Any safety device which protects others *from* me is, IMO, fair game for Laws. Any device which protects me against my will...no. Not the government's business.

I am confused. Why would you not want to wear a helmet? Is it just a case of being contrary? Helemts can have cool patterns, helmets help save your life, helmets cut down on hospital spending (for those of us whose countries have public healthcare) and they stop you eating bugs/having bugs splat on you when you're traveling fast.

What possible reason is there to not wear one?

He's a fucking idiot. I'm sorry but, if you ride a motorcycle, or any other 2-4 wheeled vehicle, and are not wearing a helmet and you fall, I don't feel sorry for you because I believe you are a total imbecile.

EDIT: Sorry, I mean to say a 2-4 wheeled OPEN vehicle, you know, like a motorcycle, 3 wheeled cycle, or an ATV
Eh, it's fine when you're riding a bike. A motorcycle, things that easily go on the freeway... Yeah.

Issue being, sometimes we forget to put on a seatbelt. Or perhaps we lost our helmet. And we end up needing to pay a ticket because we had the audacity to put ourselves, and no one else, at risk, probably just because of forgetfulness or something. I don't see that as in line with the constitution or generally okay on principle for a country that was formed specifically with freedom in mind.
Because getting launched through the windshield and pasting your brains over someone else's windshield is okay? Yeah, these laws are not just for the driver themselves. People shouldn't have to see the nastiness that comes of not wearing those things.

It's a bit like getting high or drunk. I'm all for fucking yourself up bigtime, do whatever you wish, but people who aren't stupid shouldn't have to be bothered with it.

This is hilarious and only hilarious because it was his own fault, he protested against helmets and died because he didn't use a helmet... Good riddance, there's no reason to think this is a tragedy in any way.

This. Seriously, the only reason you wouldn't wear a helmet is if you wanted to look like a fuckwit or a hardass, and I'd rather be a coward than dead.
I concour. After flipping over my bicycle when I was a child....well I still don't wear helmets on that or roller blading but motorcycle I always wear a helmet......

Im personally against this law... not because I ride a motorcycle, but because anybody stupid enough to ride one without the helmat deserves what s/he gets. This law prevents the stupid people from dying...

My friend had a fuel line fault in his motorbike it exploded under him and the helmet was one of the things that saved his life. He is paralyzed from the waist down but at least he isn't dead. He started riding again recently on a an adapted one.

It's not only your own bad driving that causes accidents in which you may need a helmet. I'm not even sure why this platform exists.

Although this man died in tragic irony I think its a bit off to laugh at him, he probably has friends and family after all.

He was stupid; purposefully riding without a helmet was pretty dumb. But I actually agree with him. The problem with both the helmet and seat belt laws is that the only person at risk is the one not wearing one of the aforementioned equipment. American government is intended to allow freedom, essentially meaning that you can do whatever idiotic thing you want as long as it's not going to hurt someone else, which is why things like murder and theft are illegal but licking a spark plug is not. Laws are not supposed to keep us safe from ourselves, they're supposed to keep us safe from others and others safe from us.

Issue being, sometimes we forget to put on a seatbelt. Or perhaps we lost our helmet. I'm not sure about America but in Ireland and most other European countries we pay (in part) for the medical services these retards will be receiving when they are injured, although thankfully they are more likely to die outright and will be less of a cost to their fellow humans.

Seatbelts don't only protect the person wearing them but other people in the car. Say you weren't wearing a seatbelt but your friend was, you crash, you are likely to die, we don't really care because you were stupid enough not to wear a seatbelt but it's also quite likely that the force of the crash will slam your unsecured body into your friend causing potentially life threatening injuries.

As a biker (not in the MC gang type sense), I do think it's absolutely ridiculous to not wear a helmet. That, however, goes for regular bicycles as well. While you don't reach the speeds of a motorcycle with one, you do take a much larger risk when riding one without a helmet too, yet there is no law against this.
I'm not saying it's exactly the same, but the basic principle is the same, and I do think it's up to the individual. If they wanna be stupid, why stop them? As previous posters have stated, it doesn't endanger other people. I'd just as much want to see a law against smoking as a law against riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
Darwin and Murphy will prevail in the end either way.
