Excuse me a moment. If anybody wants me, I'll be sitting over there in that damp dark corner like in the Blair Witch Project ending, sitting with my arms around my legs, rocking back and forth and slowly chanting myself to death.

"I hate my country, I hate my country, I hate my country..."

Seriously. The guy was apparently put to trial in a full court case by a jury of his peers. They voted him guilty. So not only are one police officer, one lawyer, and one judge complete and utter retards, but also at least 7 members of the public WHO COULD HAVE BEEN FUCKING SHOT BY THAT SAME GUN are complete and utter retards. Simply for voting him guilty. I hate living in the UK...

Yet another reason why government cannot be trusted.

Were it me, I would have just kept the gun in my closet and that would be the end of it. Hell, I may have even bought some shells.

D'you guys mind not attacking my country rather than the incompetant legal system?
It's not our fault the government is full of retarded windbags. This is the problem with democracy; sure, everyone gets a vote, but with all these political parties, all they ever want to do is beat each other rather than help the country.
And I can't even think of anything to say in anger at this injustice that has already been said.

Upon first reading this I was highly confused. Then I looked up the location, and my first thought was "Oh, ok then." That's the kind of crap I've come to expect from legal problems in Britain. Beautiful place, but I'd never live there if only for the laws (and the cold temperatures).

It's strange to me, because here, one could walk up to a police officer with practically any firearm over his/her shoulder and strike up a conversation about which shooting range they like to shoot at and what/where/when they like to go hunting. That's the positive aspect of small towns in America.

This guy found an abandoned gun, called the police telling them that he found it and was bringing it in to get it off the streets, brought it in, and was arrested for it. If the police tried doing that here, even the ACLU with it's anti-gun opinions would be against it, and let it be known. Then again, simply having a firearm in your possession isn't a crime here, so whatever.

Reminds me of the time I accidentally went to school with a pocketknife that I'd left in my pants from the night before. Went straight to the on-campus officer, said "hey, found this in my pocket, I don't want any trouble so here you go"... and got promptly arrested, sent to a juvenile processing center, and spent the rest of the school year in an "alternative school" where we had to take off our shoes and get the metal-detecting wand every morning... in eighth grade.

Some laws are just designed to fuck people who're trying to do the right thing.

=D I absolutely dont care! I live in a free country! If this shit happened in America, even a gun strict state like MA, the cops responsible for this retardation would be on a rope shorter than you can say hanged by the public.

I dont own or fire guns. I dont smoke either but I believe smokers have every right to as well, you make stupid laws restricting whatever the hell you want, you get stupid reactions like this.

"You possess a tool or hobby capable of hurting another human being via gross irresponsibility or complete disregard for the law! We're going to arrest you with absolutely no regard for intent!"

Mmm...intent based justice system...so delicious.

That is bull shit. The police should have told him that if he would bring in the gun he would get thrown in jail and that he needs to tell them where the gun is so they can go and pick it up...
When would the police have told him this? When he showed up with the gun? It was already too late then

The guy was pretty stupid, He should have known he cannot just carry around a shotgun because he found it and is turning it in, Criminals could carry around guns all the time, and if caught say "I found this yesterday and was just turning it in!" That would completely ruin the whole system of gun licenses and permits. what he should have done, was call 911 (UK equivalent), tell them where it was, and then stayed there to make sure nobody else picked it up.

That said, it would be nice if he could be let off the hook, after all his intentions were pure, but that said, we can't bend the whole legal system for one guy who did a foolish thing with pure intentions. He did turn it into the police after all, but for all they know, he found this gun, kept it for two years without any sort of permit, then got afraid and turned it in.

The point is that he PHONED IN to say he was going to do it. If it was a crime they should have told him there and then, instead of letting him get right there and get arrested.
It's like gunning down people who surrender in war.

Oh well , this thread has now turned into a "Bash the UK legal system," thread.

Do I need to bring out the American stories?

How about the woman who drank too much water when she joined a competition then died? The family won thousands of dollars even though the health risks were displayed clearly.

How about the recent kid who shot himself at a gun show, with a gun given to him by a fifteen year old who worked there?

How about the Judge Roy Pearson who launched a lunatic legal siege on a dry cleaners over a lost pair of pants?

How about the Professor Priya Venkatesan? She hired lawyers to sue members of the class, claiming the way they kept complaining about her inability to teach constituted a "hostile work environment." She also sued her superiors.

How about New York State Supreme Court Justice Jack Battaglia who slipped on a mopped floor and fractured his knee. As a respected member of the community and a seasoned legal professional, he sued the city for 1 million.

Wait, there's more. He also sued the janitor. Yes, a $136,000-a-year judge looking to collect from the lady who literally cleans up after him ... because she got the floor wet while mopping it.

How about The Musical, lawyer Arelia Taveras gambled with client money. In an unsurprising twist, she lost it.

In fact she lost over a million dollars, her legal practice, her home, her parents' home and claims she even tried to kill herself, so she clearly lost at that too.

Of course, none of it is her fault, which is why she sued seven major Atlantic City casinos for a $20 million jackpot because she's addicted to gambling.

You see? They're both completely fucked.
Are these cases though of people successfully suing or just dicks wasting court time?
Both.

legal systems have to be flexible enough to accommodate extenuating circumstances, but not flexible enough to exploit loopholes. Combine that with the number of people and crimes these systems have to cover, and there is bound to be some F---ed up s--t, its a fact of life, and believe me, anarchy would be much much worse.

Both but then none of these are good samaratin situations like turning in a device to people who wouldn't use it to rob you.

@Baldur: The water one? Health risks were NOT clearly defined, the idiots on the radio clearly didn't know this shit was deadly. Most people actually didn't before this hit the news either. Gross irresponsibility yes. That next one was an unfortunate accident, no one was sued I believe? If the parents try to, I think they've got a case. I'm for guns but I dislike gunshows because they're just a melting pot of anti-gun stories its friggen unbelievable. 15 year old hands an 8 year old a clearly faulty gun. HMMMM. Roy Pearson was indeed a lunatic, I dont think this concerned citizen was a lunatic. Priya Venkatesan is stretching for money. That mopped floor one might actually be a real case if there weren't any signs up. There's a reason we have those. A fractured knee isn't something to sneeze at, you cant just get a new one and they never really heal properly. He could be in a cane for eternity and if anything he SHOULD have just sued the janitor, not the city. Janitor or construction worker, do your job right or people get hurt. Fracture a bone sometime, see if its any fun. Not sure why you mentioned Arelia Taveras, that would be a counter example to your arguement about how stupid people get away with retarded lawsuits. What we have here is an innocent man being arrested for doing the right thing according to the laws in that country. Those are two very seperate incidences.

No, when he phoned the police station before to say he was coming in to hand in a gun.

It doesn't really matter, when he called the police, he ALREADY grabbed the gun, so he had already committed the crime, if we let people go because they phoned the police saying they had a gun they found, my earlier arguments apply, it would destroy the permit system
