2 scenarios are plausible:

1) It is just a way to broaden the base, especially if she is appealing to female viewers as well. She's attractive, so that will definitely hit the male demo, and if she's smart, sassy and competent, that should appeal to the female demo, and the guys-who-like-attractive-smart-and-sassy-women-in-their-fiction demo.

2) They couldn't find anyone to play Jimmy as a man.

Either one, or both are equally likely, IMHO.

So long as the movie's good, I don't care. If this turns into some annoying Supes-Lois-"Jimmy" love triangle, expect to hear a head hitting a desk.

Don't really care about the gender switch by itself, but put together with a lot of other stuff I heard about this movie... well, the red flags are flying a bit higher now.

heh, heh heh heh, HAHAHAHAHAHA! WOW, this just throws a wrench in some of those arguments against the, "Making an established character anything other than X" argument. I'm legitimately surprised that most people on this issue are saying, "So long as" whilst when it comes to a character changing race everyone starts screaming and yelling. It's mind boggling to see people get mad over a characters skin colour, but a complete revamp of gender is okay so long as they're not trying to bang the main character. Welp, I think this has been an interesting insight into the minds of comic fans.

I'm guessing that the writers just found it more interesting to write it this way. No gender politics, no hysteria and no accusations of sexism.

Good night.

Calumon: Everyone's going to be angry probably! D:

'WHY?', you ask? I can tell you why. Imagine a boring brainstorming session, half the team is still in stupor from too much or too little booze and sex and sleep last night, the other half is cranking it up to 11 on caffeine, cocaine or buttplugs.

Fact: Superman Clark Kent lives a double life, with his super hero persona a secret. That's how we gotta play this.

Idea: Yeah, didn't Dexter Morgan have the same problem? I really liked his sister there. OK, let's get rid of that best buddy character and replace him with a) a female main character because YAY! and b) because Supes always looked like he needed a sister and a complete rewrite of everything.

Fcuk that, I'm out.

Tccch just another example of how the Matriarchy is taking over society with their blatant Misandry against the already discriminated and less privileged gender that is the Male. Are we just gonna stand and let the women encroach on our sacred character-this goes against the established characters and serves no purpose but discriminate against men T_T/sarcasm

Imagine if this was reversed and lois lane was made into a male-there would be outrage and rightly so but with this hardly anyone speaks up and no it is the same for you who are about to say that this is okay because men are already over represented in media if that's the case create new female character or better yet use Lana instead but people won't listen -_-/serious

If this is actually a nod to Jimmy Olsen crossdressing in the comics it will be quite an awesome thing. However my money is on Jimmy Olsen being cheap love competition for Lois. I mean really what other reason for the change could there be? Get another good looking woman in the movie? Maybe? An interesting female character? ***** Please! This is Hollywood we are talking about, anything but the main female lead is basically eye-candy.

So really all I can come up with is a boring love triangle that will lead to some COMEDEE! with Clark trying to juggle between appointments with both ladies and kinda like in that other movie where we also had a second female reportaaaaaaa OH NO.... Superman 4 flash back!!! AAGGGHHHHH!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!

This is probably just a marketing ploy by the studio to make Olsen seem more relevant than he actually is. Then, after the film is released, people will get butthurt that he wasn't as cool as advertised and then spurn the movie for ruining a beloved character for the sake of a plot.

And now I'm getting flashbacks to Smallville, where as far as I know Clark spent the whole series pining after Lois and Lana, while his created-for-the-show best friend Chloe never went beyond being his best friend, despite the way they were close enough that she actually knew his secret identity. What little of it I watched gave me the impression that she was willing, but he was oblivious, probably because the writers were afraid to confuse the audience by having Superman date someone without the initials L.L..

Edit: Incidentally, if she doesn't get superpowers of some sort, I will be disappointed. Rule one of the Superdickery drinking game: any time Jimmy Olsen gets superpowers, take a shot.

I dunno, they could also reveal that 'Jane' or whatever her name is (too lazy to go back and look at first page) is a cross dresser or even pre op transexual, and REALLY throw that love triangle into a spin.
Well sure, that is possible to... but I doubt it. That is such a giant big awkward to handle topic it needs it's own movie. Note I said NEED, simply because throwing that in there for any other reason but a cheap laugh (people who are different are funny HAHAHAA, no it's just low brow) is not going to work. It will require the movie to stop dead and discuss the social problems involved with it, have to make up someway to still keep Superman a character who doesn't judge people but at the same time has to deal with the realization he just walked into a trap and there was no Admiral Ahkbar to warn him about it. If they don't do that then what was the point of that? So it either ends up as a low brow joke, gets ignored or stops the movie dead, neither of which would benefit it.

In short to much for a 90 minute movie about basically the arch-typical superhero character and out of touch with the tone such a movie would have.

I think this is one change we can safely consign to the box labelled 'Eye-brow raising-ultimately irrelevent', besides, the dynamic between them could be fun and interesting.

Didn't DC recently make it clear Jimmy Olsen is gay?

I offer that MoS's Jenny Olsen is actually a man in drag.

Just as long as there's no bloody lover triangle. If she's going to be a female Jimmy Olsen, then she'd better act like Jimmy Olsen, and that includes being just friends with Superman and probably getting turned into something strange at some point.
