Oh, this doesn't affect me whatsoever...(because I don't live in those states) : )

Everyday, I live to put a brick wall into the line of thinking involved in stereotypes people have. I love hearing "wait, but I've never seen you say/do X before!" Maybe everybody's different and responds/approaches substances and hobbies alike differently than others?

I'm more happy about that whole gay marriage being legalised thing. Hopefully more states follow up.

I don't have a problem with people smoking and jazz so long as they don't try to make me start once I tell them I'm not interested.

I'm glad that this is happening, but less because of the whole "woooh freedom! 'Murica!" thing, and more because of the Mexican Drug Wars? as many people know the Mexican Drug Wars mean that Mexico is in a continual state of instability, with tens of thousands of people being killed. Not only that, but production of illegal drugs can result in people such as illegal immigrants being forced into slave labour in harsh, unhealthy and dangerous conditions with no or little pay.

Legalisation will mean a regulated production of marijuana, with health and safety regulations and pay for workers. Being the most popular illegal drug on the planet, it'll also certainly have a serious impact on the Drug Cartels, which (I hope) won't be able to compete against the behemoth that is Capitalist corporations. I may not be fond of them, but they're certainly better than the Cartels, thats for sure.

edit: This comes from a guy who doesn't take drugs, smoke, or even drink alcohol on a regular basis.

Education is important here, I would not touch weed because I don't want a mental illness. Each to his own I suppose.

So I read the article this morning, and now I can't stop smiling.
I have always took a strong stand against prohibition, and am surprised to see my brothers to the south making such progress.

As a Canadian, I long believed that The States stance on drugs would forever have its influence on many other countries. Hopefully, this is a sign of greater freedoms to come.

What do my fellow Escapians think of the matter?
Is this a sign of greener pastures?
Ah fuck. Now I will have to deal with even more dumbass potheads.

I hope to god more states do not do this shit.

*Hopes to not be quoted by Angry Potheads*
I gotta ask and i aint angry just curious, everyone's entitled to their opinion but how have "potheads" offended you so much?

It's cool if you don't want to explain why :)
Oh no, sorry. Was a bit pissed in Comp 101 class when I wrote that. This guy behind me kept kicking my chair repeatedly.

I don't care much for those who smoke (I just call them Potheads for short-hand speak), as all the ones I have spoken with are all doing that, "Man... I... I am so high right now. Man, what you said... what you said is just so deep, man." It is more annoying than anything else. Also, this isn't just one or two that have said this. I have met around 15 potheads and THEY ALL TALK LIKE THAT. IT IS SO ANNOYING.
Ah well then you haven't met "potheads", you've just met twats who think that they're the shit for smoking weed. Big difference.

Great, I'm sure now everybody in my vicinity will not stop to shut the fuck up about how it should be legalized like, everywhere because it's the most perfect plant ever and the big cool US are doing it too because we all know the US has always been the perfect example for all our issues in the EU.

Sod drugs and this rebel culture.
That would totally make the Netherlands hipster...We legalized weed before it was cool!

You have a problem with JAZZ? :O
Kidding, kidding. SO kidding.

On topic though, for the poster far above, nearly everyone in those states who wanted to smoke already is, so I doubt there will be an increase in potheads. Also, workplaces will still frown upon people coming to work stones, as they do people who come in drunk, so you won't get a situation where workplaces everywhere are flooded with stoners. Same goes for schools below post secondary.

I also think is a good thing they aren't going to send stoners to jail anymore. They sure as hell don't deserve that. What's worse is that in their attempt to stop pot smokers from smoking actually leads to putting them in a place where they can learn everything they wanted to about growing, smuggling and selling every drug on the planet. Jail is Drug U.

I assumes they remain to finish their sentences. Regardless of the law now, they were still breaking the law when they were arrested.
Well that would suck. They're wasting their lives in jail while everyone else is getting higher than the empire state.
it's still against the law federally. So I imagine it'll be which statutes were used to try the person. If you're in federal prison, you're stuck, if you're in state prison, you probably won't be stuck. But that sort of miscarriage of justice will probably lead to federal prisoners getting released in those states.

Very much enjoying the discussion so far.

Completely agree with all those who said that Educating The Public on the risks is vital, especially kids. I'm a long time enthusiast of many psychedelic drugs, and it always saddens me to see people abusing them.

Truly, I believe this wouldn't happen as often if more research was done in to these substances, so that we could inform the people of the facts. I know some people still think weed kills brain cells. The study which discovered this hooked monkeys up to marijuana air tanks. The equivalent of like 100 joints a day, I think it was.
Not to say that there isn't dangers, but that isn't one of them. There could be a serious mental risk for those at a young age, so it remains vital that we keep it away from persons who are in that development age range.

I can understand how some people may find the stereotypical pothead (dude like, woah!) to be kind of annoying. Personally I've never had those moments from marijuana, but this one time on lsd one of the walls in my room ripped open to reveal the entire cosmos hiding on the other side. I was on the phone at the time, and I believe my exact words were "Oh man like, wow. holy shit that's like, just wow".

Are you also afraid of vaccines causing Autism? Just curious...

OT: Awesome. Glad to see another progressive Dutch policy, besides gay marriage, is being adopted abroad (give us our 5 minutes of fame, we don't get them that often... our last chance with football kinda failed...).

To be fair, I started on Jazz a while back.
I know I should try to stop, but it's just so hard.

Hopefully other countries (including the UK) will follow suite, but I get the feeling there's still going to be a lot of opposition. If only the UK would legalise, I don't think any of the major parties have stated they're for it.
It's really only something I've seen being talked about recently over here - and not by any of the parties. Can't imagine the current "Let's Censor the Internet Because Children Must be Hidden From Everything At All Costs" Conservative government would go for it though.

No, I know that that is false, Autism is a thing you are born with. No I say it can cause mental problems because several adults I trust have told me this, I have got friends who have self attained schizophrenia from drug abuse and it is tragic. Maybe with proper use this does not occur, But I would not tempt fate.

Yeah :( it does suck but as the dude said they are in prison for breaking the laws at the time.

But i whole heartily agree it sucks
I thought that once a law is changed like that you automatically get an appeal and will then most likely be set free. Not too sure on the American legal system though....
