That's good news. Although I'm pretty sure that free game code played a pretty big hand in the sales.

I think it's nice that they're finally marketing their products.
This, so much this. Not only have I seen multiple ads for this game being shown all around, those ads are actually good and not cringe-worthy like their other ones have been. Now well see if this leads to a consistent increase in Wii U sales, because in the past once a big name game for the Wii U came out, it'd get a small sudden surge of purchases, but then quickly tapper back into Dreamcast levels of sales.

Seeing as Club Nintendo is still down for me, that's another reason. What sucks for me is I managed to do the survey and everything, but right when it was loading the screen to give me my coins and option to get the free game, the site crashed and didn't give me the coins. Wouldn't let me register Mario Kart 8 again either because it said I already used the code. *sniff* That was 70 coins dammit! T~T

Gosh, it's almost as if making a game people actually want to play and marketing it effectively causes it to sell! Well whoda thunk it?!

Snark aside, good for them. I'm thinking of finally making the plunge and getting a Wii U now, although I might wait until I've cleared my backlog.

I'm sure you can always contact customer service and get that fixed? It would be silly to think they would not. They know for sure that servers are going haywire.

That's actually amazingly impressive considering the small amount of Wii U owners out there.

"omg, COD is just the same game over and over again, just different maps and guns ... OMG! MARIO KART 8!"

Yeah, COD is the one stagnating the industry ...

Jesus, all Nintendo needs to do is stick that douche in a game and it will sell systems, un-fucking-believable! In the UK sales have shot up over 600% for the 8th installment in a series.

To be fair, I was surprised that other Mario game on the WiiU never shifted more units.

8 games in 22 years is hardly a lot

Small sampling of Nintendo's business practice. Did you know that Mario has appeared (significantly) in over 200 games? As far as appearances go, he is a slut!

Blows my mind that Nintendo can lazily throw a game together, stick Mario in it and BAM, instant sales. WiiU is in trouble, throw enough Mario at it, odd sprinkle of zelda and it will sell ... if it's on a hand held just make up a hundred odd new pokemon up and sell another pokemon game or just remake an old one and it will sell.

So that is what, something like a 1 in 5 ratio? Not bad.

The fact that Mario can appear in so many games and yet they sell so successfully shows that Nintendo are very good at maintaining brand quality over a long period of time.

dude calm down, can you really accuse mario of stagnating? he has appeared in fighting games, sports games, racing games, 2D platforms, 3D platformers, party games, etc

i think nintendo even invented some of the genres he has appeared on

mario changes stuff, thats why i believe your comparison to COD doesnt hold water

Yeah, his complain is similar to when people call Zelda the "same game every time" cause the story is very similar in each game. However, the basic story doesn't really mean shite. They do mix it up every once in a while, and the style of each game is completely different. Sure, the combat for the 3D Zelda games are similar, but not exactly the same.

Or you could say "they don't have a broad range of games, so they can spend millions and double or more time on a single game, so that it runs almost flawlessly. They can do this 'cos they know all the "I grew up with Mario" people will buy it and defend them".

First of all, love the avatar.

Second, I don't accuse Mario of stagnating, I accuse Nintendo of stagnating. Constantly pumping out the same handful of franchises.

Mario is just the prime target, it's he gets dropped into so many things! He sells games, it doesn't matter what game it is, put a Mario skin in it and it will sell.

...

you MIGHT have a point there, its ironic considering their console is arguably the most "innovative" of the next gen consoles

Surprised by how many sold I have a WiiU but dont think I will be getting this game mainly because I play for battle mode and it seems they dropped the ball there.
